Not only was the man I spoke with not interested in giving me a quote, he was very confrontational, as though I had offended him simply by being there. Do yourself a favour and stay away. read more

Wow, what an awful experience Off the Wall was! I received a large poster for my birthday, so I looked at Yelp for the top-rated frame shop in our Queen West hood and this was the top pick. Walking in, I had some ideas in mind but was also looking forward to the suggestions. My husband and I were served by a middle-aged lady who was not at all friendly and seemed to take offense at hearing our input on the kind of frame and matte combination we were interested in. At one point when I said that I wanted the matte colour to work with other things in our apartment she actually rolled her eyes at me. At another point, she commented to a co-worker that I hadn't liked her suggestion in a sarcastic tone, when I was clearly in earshot.  Getting her to show us other colour combinations was liking pulling teeth, with her audibly sighing and being incredibly rude. Worst of all, after all sorts of rigamarole about the matte colour, she suddenly announced that the poster is probably too big for a matte since adding one would mean a custom-sized pane of glass which would be too expensive. I really wish that she'd told us this at the very beginning, before wasting our time discussing matte colours  (not to mention saving us the grief).  When we were almost done, she suggested that we might want to get the poster laminated onto a board instead of putting it behind glass. Honestly, I think this was the most offensive part. My poster is valuable and lamination instantly devalues whatever you put through the process since it can't be undone. So her suggesting this made her seem unknowledgeable in addition to just plain rude.  In summary, I felt I got so much attitude in this shop and I'm not exactly sure why. All I wanted was to have some input into something that will be hanging on my wall and should go with my decor. I was telling a friend this story and she interrupted me saying: "Wait, is this Off the Wall? Because another friend went there and it was awful, they framed the wrong side of her piece." Since moving to an apartment, I decided to turn the living/dining room area of my apartment into my own art haven. To fulfill this vision, I began with purchasing my first HUGE painting during my summer trip to Vietnam. However, this painting came without a frame. On the hunt for a great custom framing store, I came across Off the Wall Art & Framing and never looked back! When I took our painting into the store, Ross (the owner) worked with me to find the perfect frame for our vibrant Vietnamese painting. Ross showed me 5 different frames and explained why each of them would work and what type of statement each frame would bring to the painting. In the end, I selected a deep brown wooden frame, which brought out the browns in the painting and matching the bright blues and greens in the picture. After two weeks of stretching out our painting to make it flat, my painting was framed and ready for pick up. I was so happy to see the painting looking beautiful in the frame and I even received compliments from other customers in the store. Overall, my $300 framing experience was worth it. Plus, it may sound expensive BUT framing is not cheap and this was the best deal I could find. Now I know why artists are starving; They pay through the nose for custom framing. Yeah, getting borders and some glass for your art is expensive but it's an investment. And I'm not in college anymore so poster putty ain't gonna cut it. We had a total of four pieces done: an original canvas on acid-free matting framed with glass, and matte laminate for three art prints. Wow. They make our humble apartment look like the Louvre. (OK, not quite but much better than my college dorm room.) Don't let the old-timer's biker threads and handlebar 'stache fool you. He's been doing this for a while and he knows his art from his elbow. He'll make good suggestions about frame type and matting without a whiff of pretension or snobbery. And he's fast too. Bring him your art and you'll get it back within a week. read more

i can understand why this is the top rated framing location in toronto, from the moment you walk in every inch of the walls are covered in awesome framing. to the point where im not sure that i found two frames that looked the same(i really tried to see...no such luck) this business also supports a couple of local artists which i thought was a really stand up thing to do. they offer some serious custom framing work, to which im not sure that theres a request they couldn't do? (never asked) i definately cant wait to use this fine establishment in the future, as i have some off sized items that would look wicked in a frame. ***full disclosure*** yes the store owners have two cats, there is some pieces of litter on the ground, which i saw one of the owners clean up right away. YES it smells like cats live in the store, it doesn't reek of a foul scent at all, and i have one strong nose *** when you come in or out of this place, make sure no cats get out, and be sure to watch where you step for the same reasons, both cats are super friendly Great service and great knowledge shown by the workers i dealt with, the place is pretty clean, and only offers street parking. read more

GREAT customer service and high quality work. The staff was very helpful in getting me exactly what I wanted for a fair price. Keep in mind this is CUSTOM framing so if you don't need a CUSTOM frame then go to Walmart and stop whining about the price. I framed a large piece and was thrilled with the final product. Maybe i went on the wrong day ..... an elderly lady took my measurements for a simple mat board to be cut - got home to find it was off on both sides by about 2 inches.... rang the store up and was told it was my fault and would have to pay for another board to be cut. the customer service if anything goes wrong is very poor, and have now discovered there are much better/cheaper alternatives. read more

I would NOT recommend this shop for anything sensitive or unique. I had a very delicate and unique piece of art to frame. Having never collected a work of art like this before, I did a bit of research on the best ways to frame it. Many of the suggestions I found were from framing information websites - so the ideas may have been unconventional, but not unheard of to framing experts. But, knowing nothing about framing, I went in with a lot of questions about these ideas, hoping to discuss with an expert on how best to frame my art. There wasn't much of a discussion. I was just told "No, you can't do this, no, you don't have to do that." Eventually, everything I had in mind was thrown into question. Being the least knowledgeable in the room, I accepted their expertise. I am now kicking myself for it!!! They told me a double matting was absolutely impossible. They talked me out of UV protected glass or acrylic. The lady even said "You don't need the UV glass. The UV protective glass would be hundreds of dollars more, anyway. And the acrylic the same; but also a pain to cut!" The artwork I have is very sensitive to light, and their suggestion that "It's fine as long as you keep it in a low lit spot" is ridiculous, now that I've had time to think on it. I don't own a museum, and I'm having this framed so I can see it every day! Now that I've had quotes from OTHER framing places to FIX my mistake at this place, I know that UV protection would not be "hundreds" of dollars more! I don't know why it would benefit them to do so, but they talked me out of something very important, despite me voicing my concern that it may be necessary for this sensitive artwork. My artwork also came in two layers, and I requested that they be overlapped in a certain way. They spent some time with me finding the best way to do so (15 min), and I'll give them credit for that. But then, when I got the artwork back, it unfortunately wasn't the same way we had discussed. It wasn't terrible, and I'm awful at standing up for myself, so I took it as is. But I did find it funny the day we were planning it out, they took no recording (photo, drawing or otherwise) of how the artwork was to be arranged. Guess they were depending on memory? Finally, the day I picked the frame up, they joked about how they almost forgot a step we had discussed to keep the art safe (a sheet of plastic between the two layers, that I had provided, to keep the top layer from wrecking the bottom layer.) Apparently the two employees had argued with each other on whether the plastic layer was to remain (guess they didn't write that down either?), and luckily, the one arguing FOR the plastic won. So, bullet dodged there - but I thought I should mention it anyway, since I didn't think it was particularly funny! I'm just so disappointed. I'm out $200. And now I need to pay to have the glass upgraded elsewhere. I'm not going back to fix it; I don't want them handling my artwork again and potentially wrecking it. read more

This place is disgusting. The minute you walk in it smells like Cat Litter. There are 2 cats roaming the place, with a cat scratch-tower in the middle. It smells awful, enough to make you want to leave immediately. It's dark, dingy, and dirty. I'll never step foot in there again. read more

I've had 2 dealings with them. Once I called and asked if they could drymount something for me with a few days notice. They said "They couldn't because their lead framer was away and she couldn't do it". Which I thought was odd because drymounnting is one of the easiest things to do in framing. Just putting something in a heat press for a few mins. The second one I arrived at 12:00 noon on a Sunday and the employee opening told me to come back in a half an hour because two of the staff members hadn't arrived in to work yet. I thought it was a little unfair because he was letting in another customer at the same time. However he was pleasant, so I went and got a coffee and came back. I had 3 images that needed to be matted- no frame. The woman who served me was very nice and spent a lot of time measuring them for me. Then when it came to the total price for the 3 mats (again no frame) it was $160!!!!!! I have worked in a framing shop and I know the cost of buying a mat board from Larson. Her numbers seemed way off. She stated that it would cost $20 plus per each mat..so where did the other $100.00 come from?? I just went online and ordered 3 custom cut mats + foam core + shipping all for $40.00. They are very nice staff, but lacking some common sense in the numbers department.
