The owner was very very involved in every aspect of a great meal that is by far the best part on Salt spring Island.

Nice location next to the marina, lots of tables…read more I was very happy with the chowder, the butter chicken is a good order, fish and chips was popular, and the fried oyster appetizer was great but came on some limp arugula that brought it down a notch. People in our party of six were less impressed with the main dish mussels and beef dip. Overall the food was better than I expected given the captive summer tourist market in prime location. Presentation, setup, cleanliness was mid. There was also live music but it got weird when competing live music started at the next door restaurant so even though both performers seemed good, we couldn't enjoy either! These places need to collaborate. Otherwise you might want a table further from other restaurants or closer to the performer. Service on the slow side but that is the norm post-Covid in tourist places where staff is hard to find. I would go back but choose my outside table carefully.

Service was very poor with a unhappy, abrasive waiter, very slow to get food into place orders. My wife and I love oysters. We bought six each paid $54, these are the smallest oysters I've ever seen about the size of a small clam and did not have much taste. Beware. Prices have climb considerably while service and quality has suffered. Final insult was that there was a broken toothpick wedged in the bottle of my beer glass that I found while finishing the drink.

Ordering can take a minute when it's busy but the food comes up relatively quick- especially the non cooked options. It was a beautiful day so seating outside was perfect. We got oysters where we shucked it ourselves and it was a fun experience! They give you a demo and can help if folks are having trouble. The freshest oysters you're going to get. The mussels were so flavorful with their broth. I recommend getting their bread for it!

We didn't have reservations and were extremely lucky to be seated at a high-top table. If you want a tide table, be sure to make a reservation. The high-top tables are more like bar style seating while the tide tables are more family style seating. The tide tables are equipped with sun umbrellas and closer to the water. The high-top tables are also covered and equipped with blankets to help ward off the chill. The Farm Store is also an option if unable to get seating near the water. A casual self-serve dining style, similar to going on a picnic. The Farm Store also has a little gift shop. Westcott Bay Shellfish only offers beer and wine. I sipped on a glass of Revelation Rose for $14. My wife had a SJI Lager for $9. While deciding what we wanted to eat, we shared the Bakery San Juan Bread for $7 with Olive Oil for $2. We each sampled a single High Beach Sweets Oyster for $3.75 each; served with mignonette and a lemon. We each ordered a Stop Light Oyster Sampler (qty 3) for $13.50: Herb Lemon Garlic, Lime Cilantro Sriracha and Chipotle Bourbon. My favorite flavor was the Lime Cilantro Sriracha while my wife's favorite was the Herb Lemon Garlic. Service was impeccable. The environment friendly. The food fresh, flavorful and fun. Overall, I am so happy that our lodging steered us to Westcott Bay Shellfish.

And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!
