Here's just a small list of the things I wanted: 60's desk clocks, lamps galore, vintage cameras, tripods, desks, art, mirrors--I could have spent a fortune. When I say this place is packed, I mean its stacked from floor to ceiling with items, deep into it's hidden nooks and rooms. Oh, and there's a door stairs with even more nooks and rooms. Just don't be scurred when you walk down the steps and are greeting by an electric chair--its a prop, not real. Although based on some of the shirts for sale, I feel like the lady who owns this place has a thing for skeletons... Anyways, when I said I could have spent a fortune, I mean that some of the items are definitely priced at "antique store" prices. But not everything is! Lamps are pricey if they're still in working condition. We found an old crank pencil sharpener and brought it home for only $15. Definitely a must-stop on your thrifting and antiquing route in CLE!

I started with coffee at Asterisk and saw the street was lined with local shops and decided to take a stroll and I'm glad I did. I walked into The Hidden Pearl and immediately knew I would come out with something. I love jewelry/accessories and there were plenty to choose from. There were also racks further back in the store with vintage clothing. I saw a few larger pieces as I was browsing which I appreciate as a plus sized woman. The owner was welcoming and invited me to explore. I ended up purchasing a ring, bracelet, and a purse. All of which I love! I found her prices to be reasonable for the items I purchased and I'd happily stop through again.

Here's why: It is in the lower level of an historic building, in the "East Center" of Richfield, i.e. the geographical center. This was the main stagecoach stop between Cleveland and Akron, and this is in the original building. Geoff Somerville knows all this, but he rarely bores you with any of that stuff, choosing rather to find out where your interests lie and whether he might have something that you would like to take home with you. Somerville's has a whole bunch of stuff, rather casually displayed. Books. Housewares. Art. Some of it is really old, as in many hundreds of years, while much of what is on sale is "mid-century modern" for the Jetsons lover in all of us. I saw a great accordion, an amazing book on steam boilers (well, some of us have rather peculiar tastes) and some beautiful leaded glass signs. I think Richfield has become such a bedroom community that some of the unique flavor of the town has been swept under the rug. Somerville's survives as local color, with charm, grace and wit. Without a doubt, Silver Eagle was the best discovery of the day. Definitely better than the Oktoberfest itself, but that's another story. Like so many antique shops; it's packed from floor to ceiling, musty-smelling, and filled with little nooks and crannies that house the most interesting things. There are several rooms, and we easily got lost for a couple of hours looking at all the cool, old treasures. They have a huge collection of local memorabilia from Akron and the surrounding areas. There are also lots of old postcards, appliance ads from the 30s - 60s (hello, Mad Men!), and LIFE magazines which were really fun to read! My favourite discovery was all of the old photographs -- they were really, really lovely. The owner seemed a little crochety, but he kept to himself. I found so many cool things in here that I wanted, but didn't have any cash on me -- I'm definitely going to have to come back.

If you collect bottles this place is your holy grail. The owner was once a huge bottle collector and knows a lot about Akron's dairy history. I love a vintage store with an owner full of knowledge. There's a pretty solid vintage appliance collection, baseball memorabilia, civil war relics, native american arrowheads, art, costume jewelry, old photographs, barn tools, antique metal toys, and even furniture (good luck getting it out). Located on Kinsman Road in a former drugstore building you will find an 'antique mall' filled with individual booths. The Mall is overall very clean and bright, most of the booths are well organized and easy to check out. On the downside I found that less then half of the items were antiques or vintage, instead it is a mix of all sorts of items. For me I only saw a couple of items that interested me. Overall the prices seemed high for what was being offered; prices do vary depending on the booth. The vendors and volunteers that were in the Mall were nice and friendly and clearly the vendors care about their booths. I was primarily looking for wood carvings, especially masks so it is always a longshot whether I will find anything, but usually I can find some items that are worth checking out; here the pickings were very slim. Of course your experience can and will vary.

After a lunch at Pacific East I was wandering down Coventry and found that Attenson's Antiques was…read moreopen and since I have walked by any number of times I figured I would check it out. Inside is incredible, two storefronts and a full basement full of an eclectic assortment all scattered about with only a vague kind of organization. Among the broad categories of items were artwork, books, clothing, cowboy boots, decor and just about anything else you could imagine. I was looking for wooden masks since I have a large collection; of course I really didn't want to find anything to buy, I was just shopping. Scattered about the store were quite a few different masks and other carvings. I finally noticed two masks hanging on the wall behind the main counter, a very detailed Balinese mask and a smaller Japanese Tengu Mask. The owner seemed knowledgeable about the masks, which was welcome and a bit surprising. The Tengu Mask just talked to me and the price was affordable, plus it was small enough that I didn't have to do a major redistribution of my collection. After a short negotiation we came to a reasonable price and the Tengu mask is now hanging in my home. A great cool spot to just browse around and see what hits your interest. There are surprises scattered all over, prices seemed reasonable. The owners were friendly and helpful. Stop in and see what happens.

Essentially inside the first floor of one of the homes in Tremont (to give you an idea of the vibe), every surface is packed and curated somehow without looking cluttered and making you feel overwhelmed. Street parking is plentiful in the area. From older books to sets of glassware (that were stunning but I had no particular place for them at this point) to a little bit of everything in between. You can tell the owner put a lot of love and thought into the curation. The owner's mom was manning the desk when I was there and she was lovely. After the initial heartfelt hello I was left to browse in peace which is always my preference. I'm always here for a conversation but it's always easier to have at the end of my browsing whether I've bought anything in particular or not. Given the nature of the business I would assume there's quite a bit of turnover in the stock and I'm curious to come back and see what's new-to-me.
