Off Broadway - Costumes Near Me - Albuquerque, New Mexico

Do a Google or Yahoo search, there are slim pickings in Albuquerque for quality places to go to find new or vintage costumes. These are the type of items that you will never find in a Halloween store. Some things are like walking into your great grandparents closet, that is they were really cool people. Virtually stepping back into time. Give yourself time to really explore this place. They didn't have what I wanted, but the young lady was able to point me into the right direction on what would work for me. Don't go in here expecting everything to be orderly, but that is the charm. They know where everything is so not chaos really, but you may need help finding that certain item. if you want to really impress someone with a costume this is the place to find it. Now if you want WalMart or Spirit Halloween cheap stuff don't expect it here. There are things here at low prices, but the vintage items cost more. They have gone out to find these hard to find items. So unless you plan to spend days searching thrift stores or antique shops just pull out the money & support this great place. You will not find a more unique costume place in Albuquerque. read more

Hands down the best costume and vintage selection in town. And I'm talking about the kinds of costumes that we're supposed to wear: they don't come out of a plastic package, "made" in Pakistan, with copyright approval from Marvel Comics; they're high-quality, handmade in this country, and they'll make you look like the real deal. Vintage is even better. Virtually any period/era/scene can be sourced, it's no wonder that one of the employees is one of the better-known thespians in town. On vacation I asked for the best vintage shop in town and was pointed to Off Broadway. They did have a rack of very nice day dress and party dresses from mid century. The selection was fairly small but good quality. There did seem to be a large costume area, perhaps that's more their thing, but as it wasn't why I sought them out, I didn't venture back there. The few dresses that did catch my eye were $220-$250, well above the typical prices I see on vintage in my area (Denver) and I quickly decided to pass. If I'm strolling through Nob Hill on another trip I'd probably stop in and check their items, but wouldn't go out of my way to go here again. read more

I echo some of the comments here: the first thing you understand about this shop is that they have a bunch of unique pieces; and the second, that you are going to be experiencing an annoying style of customer service (typical for such places I might add). Something about running this style of shop makes people entitled, irritable, and difficult to work with -friend to enemy in a second. The solution of course is to not work your own shop and set up good systems to prevent theft, and other such tomfoolery. That being said you really gotta look beyond that. I've never been to a spot like this that did so well at providing non-cliche non-childish "party" and special event pieces: wide & large selection of gloves, masks, really great wigs, suits, turn-of-last-century-awesomeness, hats, dresses, etc etc etc. My advice: don't go in a panic and be prepared to walk out empty-handed or barter for your items. If their are two price tags on an item -negotiate. If you want two items but one is really high-priced offer to buy two for less or neither. If this is the "price" (financially & service-wise) for such fine pieces then so be it. Don't fight, "be nice" and go for what you want -you'll be glad you did. read more

I just came out of this store with the most amazing 50's wiggle dress that was reduced from $120 to $50. This store - part vintage (mostly women), part costume supply and rental (both sexes) - is filled with treasures. The majority of the vintage items are 50's and 60's dresses. Here you will find more silk and cotton than polyester. Indeed, the price point for the vintage clothes is relatively high. Most dresses fall between $50-$100, though there are exceptions on either end of that scale. The vintage accessory selection is slim. The back of the store is dedicated to costumes for rent and sale. There is a large selection of reasonably priced wigs, as well as costume accessories such as facial hair, costume jewelery and the like. Additionally, you will find a good variety of Ben Nye stage make-up. Come to Off Broadway if you need a one-of a kind frock or an award winning Halloween costume. Be prepared to spend some money - but you won't break the bank. read more

I visited Off Broadway today in hopes of finding a great vintage dress to add to my wardrobe...unfortunately I walked out empty handed! While the collection here is vast - the selection ranged from the 1920s - 1970s, the prices were INSANE. A 1950s party dress will run you about $300-$600. There are definitely plenty of vintage pieces that warrant that kind of price - but it should be free of condition issues and a total KNOCKOUT. Some of the selection here is worthy of those prices...many are not. I picked up a very basic 1930s dress that had a price tag of $785. My jaw literally dropped! Additionally, the customer service left a lot to be desired. There were three employees in the store and no other customers. Not one of them said hello, made eye contact or acknowledged my presence. I am a vintage dealer myself, visiting from Chicago, and I'm more than willing to pay good money (read: a lot!) for a great vintage garment. Their indifference and the sticker shock sent me right out the door, and I won't be returning. read more

This store has an amazing collection of vintage clothing as well as period costumes. This was my to go place to look for a 1920's flapper dress. I did not walk out empty handed and I had fun in the store shopping. The collection is so great! However, my only complaint is that the store clerk that helped me was very dramatic to say the least. She was friendly because she handed me a stack of dresses to try on and she helped me put together a look. But I was truly going for authenticity, or as closest I can possibly get, and her response to that was "Its 2014 no one will know the difference" So I ended up with a costume dress that I had picked out and it was as closest to what I wanted. But I did not feel comfortable with the sales clerk. I am grateful they helped me put together a look for my 20's theme party but I don't like having to deal with an overly dramatic sales clerk. The owner of this store is super nice, and good for her for having such a wonderful collection for people to rent and buy. However, maybe the store can do without the drama sales clerk. read more

This store gives me mixed feelings. On one hand they do have amazing vintage items. On the other, many of these items are quite inaccessible. They are tucked behind the counters or inside. This means you must ask the sales associate constantly for their help. When I deal in vintage, I want to poke around and look at lapels, look for holes, feels the materials' lasting quality. And with only one sales associate, I didn't feel like bothering them. Neither did they make themselves readily available. Also, some things seem overpriced for their quality and age. As with everyone above me, I have never had a good experience with the owner. She has always been incredibly rude and for a store in little Albuquerque, NM, the prices are simply outrageous. Go across the street to Revolver. The owner is a sweet, wonderful guy who has a beautiful collection of vintage pieces and is willing to to work with you to help you afford the piece of your dreams. The only downside is he hasn't got costume rental, but with the prices Off Broadway charges, I'm sure you could buy the pattern and materials and have someone make you the costume for less. read more

My wife and I went to Off Broadway today to find some items for an upcoming costume party. We waited a while to be helped, which was fine. The gentleman that eventually helped us was nice and had some good ideas. We were unaware of any of the costs and admittedly had a little sticker shock when it came time to make the decision to rent. We asked if we could possibly hold some items until the end of the day so we could have the opportunity to piece a couple of the more expensive rental items together at some of the local thrift stores. We also mentioned that we understood if this was not possible and that the likely-hood of those items getting rented by the time we returned was not very high. At this point, the owner - who had just arrived - decided to chime-in and tell us that everything in her store was authentic and simply couldn't be found anywhere in Albuquerque... not to mention how much time her employee had spent with us. She rolled her eyes and did what I can only describe as a turn/spin of disgust. She had not seen how long we had waited before she got there. There's a good chance we would have sucked it up and returned to rent the costumes, but after the way we were treated decided to try our luck elsewhere. By the way, I found an exact match of the leather vest I wanted to rent for less than half the price at Thrift Town and now I own it. So much for her stuff not being able to found anywhere else in Albuquerque. I will never step foot in Off Broadway again. read more

I came to this store looking for a corset for Halloween. I wanted this for costume and also for special occasions. I came in and the woman working greeted my friends and I. I asked her if he had corsets and she took me over to a wall that had about 5 different styles. There was one of each style. She pulled out one we thought would fit and she started to fit me. Once it was on, I had asked her if we could tighten it because it looked and felt way to loose to which she replied "I can only tighten it more of you buy it." We took it off me and I had asked the woman of they did any kind of holds for at least an hour or until the end of day. She said "if someone comes in and wants it, I'm not going to hang on to it for you." So instead I asked if she had a business card so I could call her to see if it was still available. Next I had asked her if she had ever heard of a store called "Free Radicals" that was down the road because I also heard that they had corsets and she tells me "the only store I know about is mine and that's it." I was pretty irritated by this point and left. The woman was only friendly the second we walked in the store. She kept repeating the amount of the corset to me (it was $100) like I couldn't afford it. Every time she spoke she sounded very catty and seemed like we were bothering her. I ended up leaving and went to Free Radicals and had the best customer service experience and I was fitted in 3 different styles (which we tightened as much as possible) without any issue. I paid $10 more for a corset here and also bought a lace jacket to go over it. The corset was much better quality and the girl working did an outstanding job. I won't be going back to Off Broadway. Bad customer service, selection, and the quality of the corset was not worth $100 read more

My friend and I went in here to look for zombie makeup and they had a fairly good selection of stuff (liquid latex, that stuff you put on your teeth to make them look rotten, makeup) but it was really expensive imo. The space is really cramped so it's not so great for claustrophobic people. The employee wasn't very knowledgeable... I hope he is new or something but I have a feeling he's been there a while. Maybe they packed extra stuff in because it was close to Halloween but the place just felt a bit Hoarders and I didn't enjoy spending time in there. They add up your items on one of those old timey calculators so you have to trust them to not screw up your total. That's one thing I wouldn't be comfortable with, personally. My math skills are pretty good but I'd prefer to shop somewhere that uses technology to add up my purchases; less room for error. I'm not sure why anyone would shop at this place for anything other than Halloween stuff, honestly... but I guess it's just not my cup o' tea. read more

I went to this location looking for an outfit and received HORRIBLE customer service instead. There is an older woman who wears glasses at the front desk. I don't know if she was just having a bad day or if her attitude is always so negative but she made not want to purchase anything from Off Broadway. There was also a man in the back of the store who was just as unfriendly as the woman in the front. I was lucky in that I encountered a woman who was younger who was nice and offered to help me. I wish the other two employees would take some notes from the younger woman. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a store before. read more

I was very excited to finally go to "Off Broadway Vintage". I had been following them on instagram and saw a couple of silk vintage dresses that looked like my size and was so excited to try them on for an upcoming holiday party. When I entered the store the sales person was on a private phone call and completely disregarded that I had even walked in. He was speaking very loudly about a sexual relationship he was having so, I gave him some time and looked around the shop. Realizing most of the garments had to be handled by an employee I began to approach him... he didn't even make eye contact with me, instead he moved further away from me from behind the counter so he could stay on the phone. At one point he said, "It looks like I'll have to get off the phone here in a minute," but he never did. I finally left, very disappointed and shocked. It's to bad, had he even handed me the dresses to try on he would have made the sale even though he was so rude... read more

I went to Off Broadway in high school and had the reaction of several people here - "wow! overpriced" but since I've spent the last 10 years researching vintage fashion, I now think that the prices are justified (I personally can only afford them after they are put on sale - or I do layaway). The dresses aren't just any "old dresses" that they find - they are top labels and respected designers from the last 100+ years. You have to pay more for high quality products, and these prices are comparable to what I would find in Seattle. Each garment has a hand-written card describing it; such a nice touch! I LOVE going into the store to try things on; there is not pressure to buy, they just care about the garments and will help you try things on so that they are not damaged. Ask the owner what your are looking for, and she'll dig into one of the racks and find something that you might never have noticed on your own, you try it on, and it's like it was made for you - all the staff have really good eyes for what will look good on a person, and with how full the store is, still have the ability to find and remember everything. I haven't rented costumes, but their make-up selection is amazing - we did Dia de los Muertos makeup and had people in the parade taking pictures of US! I love that there is no "musty closet" smell - again, the employees here truly care about fashion and presenting the history in the best light possible. I love the creative window displays - especially for Pride weekend, election week, there was a "mad men" theme one time, etc. They are very supportive of local theatre, sports, and dance groups also, and I've heard "shout-outs" to Off Broadway at two events I've been to in the last year. This shop reflects people who love what they do and take it very seriously. They could have thrown in the towel after a fire ruined everything they had in the shop about 10 years ago? But instead they dealt with the loss, did the hard work of repairing the damage, and came back better than ever! Off Broadway is a wonderful local business and brings glamor, style, and fun to Albuquerque. read more
