Odette's...Oh No!
Headline, the Odette's restaurant has lost their executive chef, Adam Sheff, and they are running on borrowed time. Hopefully, they can find a new executive chef, otherwise we fear this restaurant may be in its way down the Delaware River which would be sad given how much time, money and effort was put into making this a special dining experience for visitors and locals alike. While Odette's continues to have an exemplary (and expensive) wine list, its menu has changed to something you would find at Peddler's Village, Applebee's or Chickie and Pete's. No exaggeration here - we've gone from fresh soups and a French-inspired, locally-sourced, seasonal, artisan menu (which we loved) to a basic selection of chicken parmesan, meatloaf, shrimp cocktail, linguine Bolognese and a burger. The beautiful dessert menu is gone, replaced with favorites you would find at any mid-level restaurant along Route 611. All of this combines to an overpriced experience for food you'd be better off making at home. We went there for my husband's birthday just a few days ago and here is what we experienced: a underexperienced, disheveled wait staff, our lost reservation, burnt salmon and candied carrots (which were literally black) with a rice which tasted like it came from a box, chicken parmesan which was burnt, hard and thickened with cheese accompanied by a pasta side which also tasted like it came from a can. There was no attempt to make the plates look attractive, it looked like food you would receive in lunch line at school. We did enjoy a very nice bottle wine which became our dessert because we couldn't bear to further attempt the dessert menu given how horrific our entrees had been. Our favorite part of the evening was leaving and seeing the young person who served us our wine, all dressed in their parka coat, ready to leave for the night, sitting at the hostess desk, scrolling through their iPhone. When we politely asked our server whether there had been a chef change, they didn't know and inquired for us - they came back to tell us that there had been a change. In doing a little research the next morning, I was able to find out that there actually is NO executive chef at Odette's right now, they're making do until they find a new one. They have an ad on Indeed seeking an Executive Chef which has been live as of the last 7 days with the phrase "hiring immediately." I do hope they find someone, and in full candor, I hope they'll reconsider the median salary range for they're offering for the position because with the investment they've put into this location, the marketing and the clientele they can draw, they would be best to understand that they will only do this by investing in an outstanding chef who has a good resume, reputation and the ability to create a special dining experience. Anything less will never restore the glory that this wonderful place has enjoyed since it was restored. read more
