I've also never been to a packed cinema here - most films seem under-attended, but I actually prefer that. If you join their club, you get cheap tickets on Tuesdays, and they also do Meerkat movies so you can get a good deal that way. One mildly annoying thing (though it's for a good cause) is that cinema staff pop in once or twice during each film to make sure people are sitting in the proper seats - namely, that nobody is sitting in the premium seats who hasn't paid for them. It's a small distraction but over quickly, and keeps people from sitting in the wrong spot. I've been to other cinemas where people just sit wherever they like, and it's a massive hassle to get your proper seat, so at least here they're looking out for you. Easy free parking in the Trinity Square lot.

I've been here a couple of times for a drink and the bar menu has always looked great so I decided to pop in one day for my lunch! Knowing I was eating later on I opted for one of their light bites although their main menu looked great aswell. The B.L.A.T was a good twist on the classic with the addition of some tasty avocado. With a side of salad and served in a crusty bun - it just hit the spot! Having treated my mum to a spot of lunch too saw her going for the hot salmon salad served in the same dressing and some soft boiled eggs which also looked divine. All washed down with some white and rose wine and just enough waiting time for our food - i'd say success all round. I need to come back to try some of the bigger mains!

Many top acts have visited here over the years, and it has hosted the infamous local Gang shows as well as loads of local shows, giving the children the opportunity to perform on a big stage. They also show the big films, although a few weeks after they have come out in the big multiplexes. Cheap and cheerful admission prices and a well stocked tuck shop. A lovely traditional theatre.

The seating facilities are also quite cramped. The ticket prices for the cinema are quite cheap though so it's good for entertaining kids in the holidays. They also hold smaller performances such as variety shows featuring dance troupes from around the South Tyneside borough, along with local comedians and some singing acts. Last year their Christmas pantomime was particularly popular. It featured ex-Scooch band member and Eurovision star David Ducasse. It was established by some people who met (I think at the side) and decided to put together a fantastic place - The star and shadow cinema. If living in the area or visiting the area it certainly is worth checking out. Has a fantastic array of alcohol (by this please don't go expecting night club / cocktail bar alch, but decent, fairtrade all good booze, juice, coffee, tea and snacks). There are many meetings every other week where people get together and decide what to put on - what to get involved in etc again check out their site. It also has a very quirky market on sundays every so often. Down the road from star and shadow is the cluny, across is the tanners and down the road and up the bank is the cumberland - all fantastic watering holed (check other reviews where available).

Though its rival is seen to…read morebe the Theatre Royal, I can honestly say that I prefer the general atmosphere and architecture of the Journal Tyne Theatre. On my first visit I found it virtually impossible to locate despite having lived in the North East all of my life. When I did eventually find it, he staff were welcoming and cheerful. Last year I saw numerous pantomime performances throughout the North East, but I can honestly say that despite its lack of special effects and its very basic stage, the actors and actresses were more engaging than any of the celebrity endorsed pantomimes. I guess they have to be in order to keep up with the competition and pull in an audience over the christmas season. The actual inside of the theatre is lacking - it goes without saying that it is a very old building, which isn't particularly well maintained. However, it does have a certain charm and for this reason I look forward to the christmas pantomime every year.

There's a good sized bar which is always a bonus. It's not a glitzy place but it's atmosphere more than makes up for anything it might lack in looks.Much nicer than a lot of the newer venues around.
