Really great, comfortable seats, great service and very nice food. I would definitely recommend.

The tyneside cinema is one of those old converted theatres which still holds some of the charm from back in the old days... I've been here a couple of times for a drink and the bar menu has always looked great so I decided to pop in one day for my lunch! Knowing I was eating later on I opted for one of their light bites although their main menu looked great aswell. The B.L.A.T was a good twist on the classic with the addition of some tasty avocado. With a side of salad and served in a crusty bun - it just hit the spot! Having treated my mum to a spot of lunch too saw her going for the hot salmon salad served in the same dressing and some soft boiled eggs which also looked divine. All washed down with some white and rose wine and just enough waiting time for our food - i'd say success all round. I need to come back to try some of the bigger mains! read more

This place is the bomb! Had to come back to have a proper look and read of the exhibitions. I'm a sucker for old style things and theatre related shizz so I was so happy to find this hidden down a dark dank alley! OK, not as scary as I am painting but it is a little tucked away as despite walking past it quite often, I never realised it was there! But seriously, so totally worth the hunt to find it. It's like stepping into a time warp and it is definitely an experience you need to have! The hall has been restored to it's glorious days revealing detailed ceiling work, painting and tile work. I had a sneek peak into the small theatre rooms and they look so cosy unlike the big competitors out there. Plus, this cinema shows foreign films as well blockbusters and they serve a range of snacks and beverages that includes alcohol. There's also a free exhibition and free guided tours about the history of the cinema as well as an adjoining coffee joint and a cafe! The cinema can also be hired out! I will need to come back to see a film and grab some grub next time and then I can give it a 5* as I will no doubt enjoy the film (probably a Japanese anime title becuase they actually show some!) and the experience. read more

What a hidden gem!! Newcastle is very lucky to have this unique independent cinema tucked away on a quiet side street in the city centre. Tyneside cinema offers you that personal touch that is now lacking in larger venues! It's like a flashback to how cinemas should be....quaint,petit and selective! I have often chosen to visit to see the many foreign films on offer or the less well known releases. That said they show the headliners too but only for a short time! I have never been as comfortable sitting through a film as I have here! The seats are awesome and there is ample leg room (not so much a requirement for me but it does mean I don't have to move to let someone pass)! You can buy snacks and drinks (including alcohol) as you would normally expect but no big pick 'n' mix here in case like me that can be reason enough to splash out on a cinema trip. I recommend this to anyone in Newcastle and can pretty much guarantee you will become a cinema snob like me. Once you've sampled the best why go back?! read more

When I say I would travel down to see a film here, I say that wholeheartedly. I'd make a day of it, mind you. Head to a few other local favourites; have a darn good lunch too. And then I'd kick back here with a beer and watch a movie. This cinema is my UK favourite. It is a delight, with a beautiful, atmospheric bar downstairs and several comfy screens. In particular, the sound quality is superb. During our two night stay in the city we went to the cinema each night. Mainly because we couldn't resist its charm. We are avid cinemagoers at home and this spot was a highlight of our stay in Newcastle. The staff are great. There's a pretty hefty menu at the bar. You can get smoothies, soup or something a little more substantial. The selection of beer is pretty good too. There's frequent events in the bar and even regular free films on show in the screen in there. (!) I could so easily lose track of time in the bar before a film as it's just so comfortable. There's a special place in my heart for this cinema. read more

This cinema used to be a newsreel theatre in the 1930s. The building is a fine specimen of art deco, and was restored to its former glory two years ago in a complete refurbishment. They have four screens; the "Classic Circle" is expensive but has huge leather chairs and its own bar, or you can bring wine you've bought in one of the bars elsewhere in the building. They show most mainstream movies, quite a lot of art house films, and classic movies on a one-off basis. Oh, and they show opera live from the Metropolitan via satellite. The building's beautiful with fantastic atmosphere, the bars are nice and you can get good wine on the top floor, and I can't imagine a nicer place to watch a good movie. This is a cinema for grown ups. read more

What a cool cinema! How lucky we are to have this in town. We've only been to one film here but we were very enchanted by it and are looking forward to exploring more. This is a quaint, old building that has maintained its charm from its early days. Though there are few screens, they show a wonderful mix of current releases, art films, and fun "event" movies (like showing the 1954 Godzilla right before the 2014 Godzilla comes out). They host satellite Q+As with actors/directors, show live theatre and opera, foreign films, classic films, and basically everything you'd want to see. While you enjoy your film, you can partake in reasonably priced beer and wine from the little bar area. Snacks are quite affordable, with a small popcorn being only £2. Like a time warp, really! And if you forget to stop at the bar, there is a tiny drinks and snacks cart outside the screening room where you can stock up! They also have a cafe on the second floor, and an adjoining Italian cafe downstairs. "Friends of the cinema" get discounts on movie tickets and food/drink as well. The seats are comfortable, even the elbow rests are soft. And at a cinema like this, people are respectful of the film, you know? You won't get noisy crowds or people talking or checking their phone the whole time. Actually, they have special screenings for parents and carers of young children, so you won't even have a crying baby at your screening because they have their own! You can tell the staff is passionate and it makes you feel passionate about film again too. They have a variety of discounts but an evening ticket for an adult is £8.80 which I think is quite reasonable. Sound and visual quality are as good as you'd get anywhere. You aren't missing anything by going here instead of the Odeon or the Vue, except the crowds, the overpriced snacks, and ten more screens showing the latest awful romantic comedy. This little side-street cinema is a hidden gem in Newcastle. They offer a range of films from Hollywood hits to the more avant-garde and world cinema - so something for everyone! The chairs are comfy and the staff are very friendly and passionate about films. I recommended visiting their coffee rooms (brilliant coffee) or the Tyneside bar cafe for some worldly delights from their interesting and tasty menu. read more

Went to my first movie here and really loved this place. There is something quaint and sweet about it, like you found it in a old French movie. It helps thats its down a sort of hidden back alleyway. The chairs are really comfortable, the prices are decent (especially the student discounts) and it was very clean and well taken care of. read more

The Tyneside Cinema was originally built as Newcastle's News Theatre in 1937 and today is the finest surviving news reel cinema in Britain. The cinema has just enjoyed a hugely expensive makeover to restore the glorious 1930's features of the building. It features only 2 or 3 screens and shows mainly arthouse movies, quirky foreign films and classics that are rarely seen in mainstream cinemas. The cinema boasts a genuine Italian café as well as a really nice licensed cafe serving a range of food and beverages. They also host lectures and run courses - generally art or film related. The new permanent exhibit describes the building's history and how news was filmed and screened in the days of the newsreels. You can hear the stories of the people who made the news and what the newsreels meant to local people, and even make a projector whirr into life. The building and the exhibits are open everyday (10.00am - 10.00pm), and free guides are available from the Box Office. In the mornings you can also take a look around the Classic screen and be transported back in time with a free screening of an archive Newsreel. Every Tuesday/ Wednesday (10.15am & 11.30am) and Saturday/ Sunday (11.30am) tour Guides will talk you through the fascinating story of the Tyneside Cinema and give you an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes of this unique building. This palace of delights is a gem right in the heart of Newcastle. Built as a news-reel cinema in 1937 (by Dixon Scott, great-Uncle of Ridley and Tony) its now one of the only survivors of its type in the UK. It was restored in 2007, when layers of emulsion and '70s carpet were removed to reveal the original mosaics, ceiling roses and art-deco/oriental inspired features. It now looks stunning once again. Its founder believed that going to see a film should transport you away from your everyday life, and the exotic and artistic features in the lobbies and stairwells were the first step in that. Its a magic that still works today - why go to see a film at one of the soul-less chav-infested multi-plex cattle-sheds when you can make an experiece of it here, for similar (or lower) prices?! Although the Tyneside specialises in foreign and art-house films, it also shows a selection of the bigger 'block-busters'. I've seen Watchmen, Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, and Hellboy 2 here, as well as Waltz with Bashir, The Bicycle Thieves, and My Winnipeg, and the difference in atmosphere watching with these audiences is evident. The original screen is still the heart of the new cinema, with its thick red velvet curtains and flanking pillars. The refurbishment also added leather armchairs and two-person sofas to the 'Classic Circle' for only a few pounds more! There are 2 further screens upstairs, providing a modernist contrast to their venerable sibling below, and smaller private viewing rooms. Each screen allows you to take in food and drink, including alcohol, allowing you to enjoy a quality film with a fine beer, wine, or spirit of your choice! As well as the conventional popcorn or minstrels, the bar on the top floor will also sell you olives, cashews, or biscotti to snack on during the showing (or just hanging out in there). The building also includes 'The Tyneside Coffee Rooms' a local institution since the 30s, where clientelle ranging from shoppers to students, families to filmistas partake of fine teas and coffees as well as reasonably priced food ranging from sandwiches or baked potatoes through to tempura vegetables. Perhaps my personal favourite, though, is Intermezzo - the Italian style coffe bar on street level. As well as fantastic espresso, and a dizzying range of ciabatta and piadina, they have an ever-shifting choice of superb cakes (giant muffins, treacle tarts, croissants) which truly have to be tried. With a comprehensive cocktail menu also, this place maintains its cool and cosmopolitan atmosphere through the evenings, and the friendly staff and alternative atmosphere provide a haven in the town centre from howling stag-parties and bellowing hen-nights. Its truly a pleasure to see Dixon Scott's vision of an escape from the everyday still thriving in the heart of Newcastle, and I can't recommend the experience to you enough! read more

The chairs are really comfy. The fims shown range from very arty films to the latest blockbuster release. There are events on in the bar cafe and free films are shown in the bar cafe as well. You can join as a friend of the cinema to receive discounts on films and food. The rooms can be hired for events and it also has a wedding licence. This cinema is a gorgeous little quirky cinema with only 2 or 3 screens that feels like it's been there forever. They show art house films, foreign films and films that have ceased to be shown in cinemas for some time. They have a genuine Italian café annexed which serves delightful expresso and they also put on talk sessions on interesting subjects mainly art or film related. They are in the process of refurbishing this venue and are due to remain shut until the construction work is fully terminated but as soon as the doors open again in 2008 get down there for a truly creative experience. In the meanwhile, the cinema has moved to Gateshead Town hall on the other side of the river. read more

This place actually on the Gate if you have plenty plan to hang out like go to cinema, shopping, go to gym, go to pub and many many more. This place in the city center so just walk out from the gate you can find plenty store. But if have rain and snow is not good idea to go there. This odeon is the best place for watching movie because if you see movie at any chair you can still enjoy the movie. This place pretty clean. Agreed this is the best old style cinema in Newcstel with ist period tearoom. For visitors to the city it offers a change of pace at night toth frenetic bars or eating out. Our version of Art house cinema.Confusingly for a while was temporarily relocated to Gateshead but now back at its Newcastle city centre home. Rarely if ever does it have current films with a much greater emphasis on rarer or classic films. Licenced premises! read more

This is a fantastic place situated centrally near the Monument and Newcastle's Grainger Town. The art deco interior is impressive, and the friendly staff make you glad you came. The Tyneside is one of the things I miss most about Newcastle, and when I lived there I was a regular visitor, not just for the films but also the cafe and cinema shop. On the receiving end of good investment, and a recent refurbishment, it just gets better and better. read more

The Tyneside cinema makes a really nice change from going to a multiplex, as it only shows a few films at a time, and these are rarely 'blockbusters', so it gives you a chance to watch something a bit different. I also love the cafe! The cakes (white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake!) are absolutely lush, and they do lovely paninis etc at really reasonable prices. As previously mentioned, it's currently in Gateshead town hall, but will be moving soon. Definately worth a visit. read more

The Tyneside Cinema is located right in the centre of Newcastle and is perfect for a good place to relax after a hard day's shopping. The cinema shows a variety of films, not all mainstream, however this adds to the appeal of the place. Seating is spacious and comfortable and ticket prices are reasonable, with discounts available for students. read more
