In general its quite a nice little cinema with nice staff and with easy access to nearby food places too :)

Opened in 2015, it has state of the art projection and sound equipment, and concentrates on the recently released mainstream films, though live streaming of theatre and opera is also occasionally offered. The cinema itself has a lobby with a long single counter, serving both the cinema tickets and snacks - mostly drinks and popcorn. There are automated ticket machines for pre-booked tickets. The individual theatres vary considerably in size, but all offer wheelchair access, and have premium reclining seats as an option for an extra charge. Otherwise, the big draw is the price - at £4.99 a ticket, it's one of the cheapest cinema experiences around. There's plentiful parking nearby in the Kingsmead car park, alongside local bus stops.

It's true that the car park does have a flood weakness, but this usually only happens once or twice a year. We went to see 500 Days of Summer (also excellent by the way!) and I gasped out loud as I walked into the Screen. It was HUGE! The screen was tremendous and there were approx a gazillion seats. Lovely, modern, clean, wonderful image quality, superb audio. Tremendous all around. I am not sure if it was due to the quality of the film or the superiority of the cinema design but despite the size it was a very intimate and personal experience. Sweet popcorn was great too. (Yes the cardboard style popcorn, whatever! Judge me :) ) I wish it was nearer London but as I often travel to Oxford I'll be making a stop here on my way past as often as I can. Due to being in the Eden shopping centre there are plenty of restaurants, shops & starbucks about too... ps. I had a hotdog!! I hadn't eaten for ages and the staff looked like they could do with some help meeting their sales targets. They were nice. Ok I had two but I don't recommend them cause I was too hungry to be a fair judge.

It also has cheap Tuesday tickets and an unlimited scheme when for £12 a month you can see as many films as you like. As it has 12 screens it shows a really good choice of films with lots of showings every day. The food is pricey as it is in all cinemas but no one forces us to buy it. Unfortunately you do have to pay to park but it is cheaper after 6pm.

That excites me because it is so old school and it's rather rare. In fact, i don't remember the last time i saw it. They show the blockbusters, but also have different film seasons. There is currently a French one on. Today i saw UP and it was great. The cinema was full of screaming, restless kids, but i managed to zone out and enjoy the Pixar goodness.

The service at the concession stand was a bit spotty, on the first visit 4-5 employees were shooting the breeze right in front of the counter while there was 3-4 people waiting to be helped and the guy who was supposed to be working the counter was just standing there watching TV. On the second visit they had more people serving the customers and it didn't take very long. I thought the whole VIP seating arrangement was a bit odd, even though I spent the extra £1.55 both times. The movies were good, but this isn't a movie review site so I won't include my commentary on that. :)

Comfy couches, milkshakes to order and wait WHAT!? They sell a Washington wine?! F* Vue, I'm coming here the rest of my days. The Esher outfit has 4 screens, with Screen 1 being the biggest. It's a double decker with great sound and nice two person couch 'booths'. You can also order hot food in and bring alcohol into the cinema screen. Adults only, no crying babies and giggly teens? Heck. Yes. Sadly two things knock this place down to a 4* vs a 5*. Firstly, staff service here is very hit and miss. Very young staff meaning texting / giggling amongst each other can sometimes come above a waiting customer. Additionally, the screens are quite different in terms of comfy rating. Screen 2 has little footrests that mimic say a sofa/coffee table at home, whilst Screen 1 doesn't, which does make it lose just that little bit of comfiness for a long movie. Also, weirdly enough, end booths in Screen 1 don't have a table or a perch, meaning the person closest to the aisle has got to either put their drink on the ground (watch the spillage!) or hold it the entire time... Not ideal. However, it's still a much better (read: Expensive) experience, but I'd take this any day over a Vue (or the Vue in Staines) as it's closer, more intimate and caters to insolently intolerant people like me.

Four screens, each screen room different but all have comfy couches, chairs and tables, the sound is excellent too. The cinema was spotless and a notch up in decoration, comfort, style and class from your usual Vue and Odeon cinemas. I found the staff helpful. As it was not busy I did not have to wait to be served. We ordered the vanilla and peanut butter milkshake, v nice. As the film started our pizzas were delivered to us. We ordered the margherita and special pizza. The chap taking the order wasn't sure of exactly what the special pizza was said it was ham and capers. I quizzed him a little more and he said Palma ham. Got to say although not large in size they did taste delish and I would not hesitate to have them again. It felt weird eating watching the movie but a great weird, I could get use to this. I remember…read morecoming out of seeing Return Of The Jedi pretending I was an ewok, excitedly leaving after watching Marty McFly in Back To The Future and being less than enamored with Flight Of The Navigator - well you get the picture. Then it fell into disrepair and became a place you dared your mates to break into during the late 1980s after school had finished. Now, The Rex (as all good cinemas should be called) has been restored to its former glory. When I say former, think 1930s Art Deco, plush red seating, original projector and art house matinées. The place is a treat and a MUST visit for any cineophile. Prices are reasonable (approx £7 at time of writing) but availability is tough. You need to quick on the phone as it seems every person in Berkhamsted is a paid up member. Before each performance (and they are performances!) you can relax in the lobby where there are books on film to paw over or head down stairs and grab yourself a beer or a glass of wine. It's that sort of place. Do make sure you get to your seat in time for the traditional, and I found informative, pre film introduction from the Manager, James. A proud, curious creature James embodies the character behind this most charming of movie houses.

At Cineworld Aldershot, we got turned down, along with a group of other people just because we couldn't show ID. One of the people who works there claims that these have always been the rules, and they have been enforced; effectively telling us that we're liars when we claimed that this has never happened. I mean, who even carries their ID around; and to cinemas no less? Don't recommend going to Cineworld Aldershot, find somewhere that actually has good quality customer service, rather than those who lie about their cinema guidelines.
