Chris ruined the experience for me and turned it from a celebration of my own achievement to a showcase of his ineptitude and idiocy. From the moment I set foot in the shop, he gave me crap about the design: the placement of the anvil and pincers, the overall design, etc. Despite the fact that I provided my own reference material and gave clear instructions about what I wanted done, he half-assed the job and finished the tattoo in half an hour with the skill of Napoleon Dynamite. I felt revolted by his work as soon as I got back to my place and from the first moment I looked at it in the mirror, knew I wanted it removed. Now, as a seasoned tattoo collector with more than 20 on my skin, I am having to pay 3 thousand dollars and endure blistering lasers once a month because of this imbecile man's belief that he is anything other than someone with a skill (HA) who lends his abilities to others to make their vision come true. If you want to have your positive tattoo experience shat on and to endure tattoo removal for years afterwards, I highly recommend booking with Chris at Oxygen Ink.

Yet the owner wasnt there, conveniently. Well that night we flew back home. But I messaged Emerson on here, never got a reply. And then on Instagram, if that even was the owner, and we went back and forth and ofcourse he said let it heal and then get back with me. Which I did. Same thing he said to my friend when she messaged him. Roger is an artist for sure a Tattoo CON Artist. DON'T BOOK WITH HIM AND DEF DON'T BELIEVE HIM! The only job he should have at a tattoo place is as a front desk receptionist or outside twirling around a sign for people to get tattoos with way better artists. They should have just done the right thing.

Upon arrival Rafael drew something up to his liking of my reference but it was completely different than what I was expecting. In minor shock I was silent. I have two full stomach tattoos, 3 portraits, a half leg sleeve, and a back neck tattoo all done by differing artist and none have ever changed what i wanted so drastically. Rafael felt my vibe being off and then offered me to work with him on what we could do. Not dead set on the tattoo I originally showed him 3 months in advance I asked if he did portraits as I would like one more. He pointed to one that I already had and blatantly asked "why don't you just go back to that artist?". Once again I was taken aback by the comment. After discussing not doing another tattoo we set back on track for the original reference and idea I provided. He drew something much closer to what I wanted but I asked for more detail. He assured me there would be more detail in the actual tattoo than in the drawing. He also assured me that the sizing wasn't an issue and would connect to my other tattoos. After he was 'finished' neither promises were kept. The tattoo looks unfinished in detailing especially in comparison to what I asked for and in the look of my tattoo style. The tattoo also does not fade into my other tattoo shading. This is so disappointing as he had an apprentice with him who was listening to Rafael call himself extremely talented and gifted and naturally amazing at tattooing. This also left me so unsatisfied I decided to pay and leave as he did not want to (or could not) do what I asked for. I will now have to spend more money with a different artist to finish what he started.

Maybe this isn't the best forum to eulogize but because he was a business owner, and that business was the love of his life, It's with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you all that Jose Luis Carrera, the owner of Ocho Placas, is no longer with us. This incredibly gifted artist, dear friend and wonderful individual passed away suddenly over the Labor Day weekend. If you've ever seen his work or had the privilege to be a human canvas for his brilliant vision, you understand what a tremendous loss this is for the world of art, both body and otherwise. Passing by Ocho Placas anytime before this tragedy, you could usually find Jose out front, dragging off a Marlboro red, shooting the shit with the other artists and the customers (often long-time, devoted clients). Even people that weren't there to get tattooed came by just to hang out. Ocho Placas is a place of stunning, almost overwhelming visual pleasure. You could spend hours inside, looking at the art on the walls and the graffiti that would often overlap the paintings beneath. Jose worked hard, he was a man of business but it takes a special kind of person to make it look so easy. The future of Ocho Placas, at least for now, is uncertain. If we're all lucky, it will remain open. The artists that survive him have all honed their skills under Jose's generous guidance. A piece of his gift and the love for his trade lives on in the many artists, both at the shop and around the country, that had the honor of working for him. Rest in power, Jose Luis, and may your vision live on. read more

I came across Ocho Placas while on my search to find a tattoo shop that had an artist that worked on traditional American tattoos. I have gone to Ocho Placas Tattoos twice, and will continue to go back to get more work done. Javier Betancourt is a genious!!! I was amazed by his prior work that I found on Facebook, and knew he was the artist that I wanted to work on me. He continues to astonish me with his work. I love my tattoos, I love his artistic style, I love what he does with color, and plan to continue coming back. The place is clean and the artists are sticklers about having people in the tattoo area that are not being tattoed. I do appreciate that. Steven designed my triple 7 tattoo with 2 dice. I loved the 7's but was not thrilled with how the dice came out. I wanted them to be white (or skin color) but there was entirely too much shading in my opinion and one of the corners of the dice was blown out. It's not in a spot many will see so I don't particularly care but still.. I know it could have come out a tiny bit better. My fault for not talking to my artist and asking more questions and assuming the dice were going to be white. However, I would have liked to know the dice were going to be shaded. read more

I"m the type of guy who does his homework before any major decision and IMO getting a permanent marking on your body is major. I chose Ocho Placas because I wanted a shop that had a reputation for cleanliness, quality work and reasonable prices. I looked at their website and thought Michael St. Vincent would be a good artist for me as the artwork I had in mind was all letters and numbers running up and around my bicep- I was not disappointed. Michael took an hour fine tuning and setting it up so that the end result would be perfect. 2 hours later I left with my first tattoo and couldn't be happier. I went here during the tropical storm Irene. Due to the weather, the shop had to be closed for a day which was understandable. Despite having no control over the weather my appointment was bumped back a day and my tattoo was credited 25% off for the inconvenience. After another fun night in Miami, two of my friends decided to have walk in appointments when I went back. I first want to mention how the shop and David's station is always clean and never left me questioning health standards at all. I know when I go in there, I'm good. I even went during mask mandations (and this is saying a lot since I spent most of my time at the height of the pandemic as a recluse) and felt safe at the shop at all times. Aside from the cleanliness, David continues to be a top choice for tattoos as I stayed with him for my subsequent works. The tattoos where Ellie's The Last of Us 2 tattoo (which we spent watching clips from TLOU during), my right arm sleeve that includes a dragon, tiger and wolf, and my hand tattoo which is a tattoo from the video game Dishonored. All the tattoos are sick but I think the sleeve is more telling as I came in basically with a general idea and David did the rest. There really is something to be said about giving an artist a general idea and allowing them to draw up something based on it as so far my right sleeve (with exception of an existing piece) is based on a general idea that David then draws up into something I wouldn't have imagined. I recommend the shop as the work done here is amazing and folks here are great. Will obviously continue sticking with David and who knows, maybe in 3 years I'll update my review again.
