One uncharacteristically warm June evening, my family and I decided that we'd quite like to try somewhere new to eat. We were fully aware of the deluge of restaurants lining Penarth's sea front, as well as the lofty prices they tend to demand. "Why not try the Ocho Lounge, then?" I ventured, and we did.
When I say the Ocho was somewhere new, I'm not being completely honest with you. My friends and I have enjoyed many an evening drinking and talking around tables bathed in candle light. The Ocho offers a wide selection of wines and beers, as well as a healthy cocktail list (the Mojito is particularly nice). We'd pick out one of several board games on offer and enjoy the uniquely intimate, chilled atmosphere.
But back to the food. As I said, it was hot, and so we wanted to be outside. The Lounge offers a small number of tables outside and I have often heard people moan about its size. However, my sister is in a wheelchair and we were able to find a space, mere feet from the disabled toilet, and enjoy the warm summer air.
The range and quality of food is rather startling. There's even a selection of tapas dishes on offer and not a single meal seemed over priced. The bean burger in sour dough bap was delicious, if not a tad too big to finish. The crayfish and chorizo jambalaya left my father full, yet desiring another sitting and the special of mackerel with apple coleslaw, my mother tells me, is one of the best fish dishes she's tasted.
If you're familiar with the area, you'll be well aware that this place is a rare gem. It appeals to adults and youngsters alike, offering a comprehensive range of food and drink that, unlike so many eateries in the area, will not leave you flat broke and under fed. read more
