It's easy to get an appointment, they text when the vehicle is ready (usually in about an hour or two), and they don't mind that I bring my own oil and filter (to save me a little $). If there are any problems they will take it back in and address whatever it is, if it's their error for free. I've brought 3 different cars (2 Subarus and a Ford) here since the mid 90's and I've always been pleased with their honest, timely, and dependable service. Chris is very forthright when it comes letting you know the repairs your car needs ASAP and what should be done at some point. I've had them do everything from an oil change to extensive engine work. Prices have been fair; you may find someone to do the work cheaper but when it comes to car repair the price is not always the #1 priority. Fantastic customer service and knowledgeable staff! I came in the door and Chris knew me by name, even though he had never seen me before and we had only talked briefly on the phone the day before. He spent 20 minutes testing my car, and driving around with me to see how I drove it. I have been having problems with my clutch, and Chris gave me some pointers and options. He did not try to sell me a new clutch because he said it did not have to be replaced at this time. Chris and CJ saved my life. I am sure of it. Not to mention my savings. OK Savings: the story speaks for itself. My tranmission seemed to have worn out-I had enough miles on the Ford Explorer to think so. The FORD Dealership wanted $1400 just to diagnose the problem, then about $3300 more for the transmission. I found Chris. He took one look (doesn't charge to take a look), changed the fluid and filter, and for about $80 I have a "new" transmission. Then a spark plug literally blew out of its screw socket from the engine-since the local Ford dealer had installed it, I took it back to them (Ford is open late at night)-Ford wanted $125 to diagnose the problem, told me it wasn't their fault (so they already knew what the problem was, grr), and said the repair required replacing the head on the engine for another ~$2500 and a week or so in the shop. I went to Chris. Chris took one look (still doesn't charge to look), said "Bring it in" and fixed it in half a day for about $180. The first time there Chris asked me if I'd noticed the truck feeling unsteady on the road. Well. I'd even scared myself the way the truck had felt out of control every time on curves at freeway speed, having to brake down to 45 and hold on for dear life. I guess the answer was yes. Chris showed me how mushy my shocks were, said I needed to replace the shocks, and do something about the suspension, which is barely so-so in my Ford Explorer. I arrogantly thought this was some kind of sales pitch, went and bought new tires and got an alignment at the recommendation of the tire guy instead. The alignment and the tire guys both asked me if I was aware how bad my shocks were. Hmmm. Went back to Chris for shocks. He said he'd been adding a specially located extra strut beneath these trucks to stop the swaying and potential loss of control. I bit the bullet and paid for the extra shock (or whatever they're called now). Well, it's a new truck. It's amazing. I am always in control on curves even at full freeway speeds. I realize now how easily I might have actually lost control of the truck, or gotten rear-ended while braking all of a sudden. hurting someone else too. Chris saved my life. No doubt about it. Now when he tells me I need something, I don't question it. I just do it. He told me I needed tires (But I had gotten new ones the year before-I wasn't sure about this, but I listened). Chris sent me(with my noisy,always unsure, slow to stop skiddy tires) to a very reputable dealer he had found and said to listen to their recommendations. The full set of tires was half the best price for the same tires anywhere else.The new tires are quiet, never skid, and bring me to a stop when I put on the brakes. I am so glad I listened to Chris. He saved my life, I am sure of it. Why go anywhere else? He is honest, won't do needless work, is smart and can figure out what's wrong, and his prices are more than fair. It's a small business, so keep your appointments, and bring your own ride if you don't want to hang out. Or, the bus runs half a block away on San Pablo. read more

I have taken my very old Saturn here more than a few times now and I am pleased with the service. They have always been quick and their communication is clear. Chris has never suggested minor upsells just for the sake of making another buck. If you are looking for the cheapest way to service you car, this isn't it. The manager is an honest man(which is about as awesome as you can hope for from a mechanic, if you consider it) I have been taking my cars there for a couple years now and I am impressed with how this garage is run and how no-nonsense the manager is about what you need for you car. I have come to expect honest evaluation of the problem, or potential problems. I've known a very short list of mechanics honest enough to tell you "no, you don't need to do that, and this is why". As with other reviewers, this has been my go-to mechanic for GM vehicles for years. This is not a check-the-box-like-a-robot crew. They care deeply about solving the problem in the most cost effective way for *you* (versus what's convenient for them or their labor rates). As a general rule of thumb, come in as informed as you can be about your vehicle, and this will only help (not hurt) their ability to be the best partner for the care of your car over many years. If i come in with an unusual (or ancient) problem, if they don't know the answer immediately, they will investigate and research the issue as if it were their own vehicle, and they will explain to you how they are doing it; this is just an example of their honest approach, and it is much more credible than mechanics who give you no visibility into what or how they will solve the problem and then gouge you and/or band-aid your complaint. You've heard it already from many voices here on Yelp: Chris, CJ, the whole Oceanworks II crew... I trust these guys, period. They have the well deserved gratitude of many customers, especially mine. read more

On the customer service side of doing business - Oceanworks II is first-rate. We're musicians who played in SF last night and were on the way to our next show in Sacramento. We stopped here after the van we're in started shaking uncontrollably on the Bay Bridge. It turned out to be a tire issue, which doesn't get handled here. Regardless, they took the van for a test drive and had it up on the lift and the problem diagnosed in no time at all. I can't describe how happy I am to have learned about Oceanworks II. They came highly recommended from another place I love, Karmakanix who worked on our VW. Karmakanix would not be able to work on a totalled 1989 Montero I had, so they told us about Oceanworks II. It's run by Chris who is so attentive and thoughtful he puts you at ease instantly. I felt like I could trust him the first time I even spoke with him on the phone. Their first job with me was absolutely massive. I wanted them to take the engine and transmission from my totalled car, and put it into another body of the same model car. They agreed to take it on without even hearing the engine run since the car could no longer start. He made it clear that it felt like a big gamble to him, not being able to hear the engine run first, and he told me so. Chris took my word that the engine was sound and strong. I trusted him and took the gamble. The effort he and his staff put into getting everything squared away was truly tremendous. They worked hours, days, and weeks, devoted to it as though they'd known me for years. Chris took great care to call me regularly, take my calls, and keep me informed of costs, delays, achievements, anything. He was kind and courteous the whole way through. There were many mystery problems they understandably ran into along the way, and the diligence they showed went above and beyond my expectations. The day they started up the engine was a great day!
