I try not to leave negative reviews unless I had a really negative experience. Instead, I like to leave really positive reviews on the places that helped me the most. I brought my truck to Town Fair Tire to have a simple alignment done after I replaced the rack and pinion (due to a leak and loud clunking sounds). When I got home, I slid a piece of cardboard under my truck to see if I could catch any remaining leaks in my power steering system, and that's when I saw what Town Fair Tire did you my truck. They twisted the boot on my rack and pinion so tightly that when I brought it back to them, they couldn't fix it. TFT sent me to Oceanside Auto and told me they'd pay for whatever repairs I needed to fix the situation. I appreciate them trying to make it right. I dropped it off and within 10 minutes they were already checking it out and had it up on a lift in one of their bays. It was about 20 minutes before they closed so I left expecting them to finish it the next day. At about 5:45 that same evening (45 mins after they closed), I got a call telling me they were able to fix my truck, let me know that the boot didn't tear, and confirmed that I didn't owe them anything. I came back the next day and was in and out in 5 minutes. They're also about 5 minutes from my house so I will definitely be using their services again in the future. Once again, Oceanside Auto came through! I went into Oceanside as I wanted to find out if there was anything they could do to make my headlights brighter. Dan suggested that I use Sylvania bulbs as they are the brightest available. As I drive a lot on unlit roads it is important I have good light. I've had mixed experiences with this places. The first time I went 3 years ago they were great. So great that I left a tip and brought a fruit basket as thanks. The last time I went I was spoke to on the phone by some woman who seemed to have never opened the hood of a vehicle before. Telling me if I didn't change my brakes immediately my tires where going to come flying off. Which seems ridiculous in my experience. Also she constantly tried to upsell me on work that I did not need. The worst of it was them telling me that they replaced all the spark plug wires and 2 spark plugs. But funny thing is those new spark plug wiring harnesses look just as worn and dirty as the old one. Even if they didn't change are the wiring for every spark plug for some reason they still felt it necessary to charge me for it. Haven't been back since. Trying to upsell to their overpriced diagnostic services, off of simple easily corrected emissions failures. Turns out there is a simple way that cars will automatically fail emissions: if any of the check engine lights are on (which can often be a simple fix as false alarms and resets are common ) instead of pointing this out they tried to high pressure me and get me to make an instant appointment on the spot for repairs. Shady. Shady. Shady. I guess they want to snag you before you can check some inexpensive fixes with a quick internet search. I wouldn't have even known any better if I hadn't retested somewhere else with people who have an actual conscience. Shame on them! Shame on the owner for this tactic. Shame on the staff who enact this. Shame. Shame. I'm not a local (obviously if you look at some of my other reviews) but I have lived in Old Saybrook for about two years now and I've used this place multiple times. They are both reliable and priced fairly and I've always been confident in their ability to fix anything on my vehicle. Went to Oceanside Auto for emissions test. First time customer. Person behind desk was abrupt. Took my keys, $20 cash and emissions notice card, and said it will "be a few." There was only one car ahead of me, so I figured it would be a 15 to 20 minute wait at the most until my car was taken in for the test. Waited over 1/2 hour. The car ahead of me was still in the test bay. I left without getting my emissions test done there. The person who returned my items to me was very nice, but no apology or explanation for the long wait time. read more

Could it be that someone is lacking customer service training? I scheduled an appointment to do a test drive and the salesperson texted me 10 minutes before the appointment saying that he would not be able to make it. This was upsetting, but I got over it and told him I couldn't reschedule at that time due to the holidays. I called him after the holidays to reschedule and left him a message. He never returned my call. I then check online only to discover that the car had been SOLD! He couldn't even call me back to say the car was sold? He did appear to be a nice person over the phone but seemed to lack customer service skills. If he is reading this, here is an important fact regarding selling: If you ignore a customer for any reason, you lose that customer which is what is happening right now. I NEVER give negative reviews, but this is needed. Not only did they not fix my car properly, but there is a HUGE scape that goes from my hood, down the side of my divers side door. AND, they over charged me by a TON!!! That's what I get for not knowing a lick about cars, being a young female, and not having coffee before I went to pick up my car. The men that actually fixed my car (BOB and his assistant from another AAA service center who actually knew what they were doing!!!!) looked at the bill Oceanscam gave me, and were disgusted! The last time we used Oceanside was for emissions testing and the guy that did it was SO rude! And that was after I waited at least 45 minutes. Oceanside Auto is, by far, the best auto repair shop that I have ever been to and the only one I will be taking my car to for any maintenance or repairs. I live in New Haven and willingly travel the 35+ minutes it takes to get to Oceanside because I know that it is worth my time and money. I found the shop randomly -- I wanted to get emissions testing done on a new used car and Oceanside was close to the Old Saybrook DMV. My experience talking to the staff (especially Mary) and the customers during that first visit confirmed to me that I had found a gem of a place. Everyone who came in the shop seemed to know the owner, David, and David knew his customers so well that he'd ask them about ongoing events in their lives. I doubt I will ever meet a business owner who cares more about his customers. I had a few concerns about the car I'd just purchased, and as a young female, I was worried that I would get scammed or talked into unnecessary repairs. I couldn't have been more wrong -- Dave personally checked out my Subaru without charging me a dime and gave me a rundown of the most to least urgent concerns. The price he quoted for replacement of my front rotors was over $100 less than other shops had quoted. He spent extra time explaining to me what signs and noises I should look out for and getting me acquainted with my new vehicle. Not only that, but he and his mechanics know what they are doing when it comes to repairs; the parts they have worked on have never had further trouble. I can't say enough positive things about Oceanside. I fully disagree with the reviewer below's experience with Oceanside -- not only have my experiences been nothing like what she described, but I have a hard time imagining how she could be describing the same repair shop that I have been going to. read more

Brought my car to Oceanside yesterday with multiple issues including the check engine light on. Dan call me within an hour and said there were 10 codes showing. He recommended we take care of the oil leak and change the spark plugs which have never been changed. He said he would reset the codes and we would wait until the check engine light comes back on. I found this be very fair. He could have said we need to fix all this. It would have cost me money that I don't have. I believe they are honest and hard-working people and would not hesitate to recommend them. Estimated: 340$- Install Upper Control Arm (this was on the estimate but I installed the part prior to going in), Install lower Control Arm, Replace O2 Sensor (stuck), Alignment, "House inspection" Amount paid: 604$ Work completed- Installed O2 sensor- Broke transmission mounts They said they had to move my transmission, which lead to them breaking my transmission mount. I had to buy the new mount and they charged me to put it in. The mounts range from 8$ to 50$, guess which one they put in. Installed Lower Control Arm- Did not add grease They said it took over 3 hours to put in the lower control arm. Which is removing the tire and about 10 bolts. They claimed it was extremely rusted. I find this hard to believe since three days before these repairs I installed the upper control arm myself no issue no rust. I even cracked all the lower control arm bolts. (Didn't touch the torsion bar) I did this in less than 2 hours on my back. What really get me upset is they didn't even fill the ball joint with grease. It's empty. But the grease from the old joint is all over the caliper and break lines. No care taken. Alignment- They did not align the vehicle I asked for an alignment, and since the control arm was being adjusted it seems only right to realign the vehicle. They did not. But as I paid for this job they ensured me that the vehicle was aligned. There are extremely bad vibrations. Vehicle Safety Inspection- Claimed it had no more issues I was told when I was scheduling the repairs that on all vehicles worked on they go through a safety check and look over the vehicle for future problems and repairs that need attention. I asked if there are any other issues, ethicizing the other side control arms. My responses was that everything is good. I have oil leaks, exhaust leak, and the other side control arm ball joints need replacing. I don't understand. They charged me double than the estimate Broke transmission mounts and made me pay Claim the bolts fought them the whole time on the lower control arm, that's why it took over 3 hrs. Didn't put grease in the ball joint. Didn't align the vehicle. The worst, as I paid for everything I couldn't even talk to the mechanic just read from his notes. This is why I try and work on my vehicles myself but I am no formally trained mechanic, still searching for an honest automotive business. I didn't call to complain or to have them look at it again. I don't trust them, I made a mistake and I lost. I hope this serves as a warning. 2 Stars because they did get out my stuck 02 sensor DAYS LATER I NOTICED* I just noticed they didn't put even put the my shock absorber nut back on the bolt were it attaches to the lower control arm. I'm contacting my bank to try and get my money back. This is a joke. read more
