Some of the places we had booked for the trip ended up not working out as well as we expected. We booked Zatori not quite knowing what to expect and we were totally stoked. Tracey has the place running like clockwork, and all of the staff was delightful. There is free, unlimited, and very good wifi included, along with all the other things you'd expect at a nice hotel. But they really knock it out of the park with the homemade bread, delicious food, and beautiful setting. Nothing's better than watching the sunset on the deck, enjoying a glass of wine, and playing the ukulele that they had in the lobby. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

The house alone is just beautiful and was restored immaculately with the perfect blend of antique and modern! Being on a hill, the drive up is a bit nerve-wracking and parking is tight, but the views from the balcony and dining area are worth it! You can also walk up directly from the street via a beautiful wooded stairway. The room I had was comfy and the communal kitchen, dining, and lounge areas were great. The other guests were all respectful of people's items in the kitchen, which I thoroughly appreciated. It was nice, too, because the mother and son who own the house and run the dental surgery downstairs (where you check-in when you arrive) live on site, so they were interactive w/all the other guests. My first evening there felt very familial with everyone making their dinners and chatting, it was nice. For me, however, the highlight was the bathroom. Even though it is shared, I never had any issues with access and it was so luxurious! They had a glass-doored shower w/a bathing wand, but the piece de resistance was the Victorian high-back tub. I don't know how long it has been since I have had a bubble bath and a glass of wine, but I loved this place so much I stayed a 2nd night just to make that dream a reality and it was divine! The price for the room was very reasonable, especially considering the location and the house itself, so if you are in Nelson, this is the place to stay! I even found a great little takeaway spot a 5-min walk from the house and the entrance to Centre of NZ monument is literally 50m away!

I was traveling with my husband and in-laws, and we were booked in their 2 bedroom plus private lounge suite - it was excellent. Each bedroom had its own attached bathroom, which was very convenient. The bathrooms were modern and clean, and the beds were comfortable and furnished with just the right items (e.g. 2 nightstands with their own lamps, one on each side of the bed; a mirror, etc.). Our private lounge was nice and cozy, with sofas, a TV, a lovely rocking chair, and coffee table. The lounge was stocked with bottled water, a kettle, a fridge, and a nice assortment of teas, which was great. Our hosts, Ian and Rebecca, were very warm, welcoming, friendly, and flexible. They did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome and comfortable in their home, which meant a lot to us. The home-cooked hot breakfast they provided was delicious - eggs, tomato, hash browns and bacon. They also served toast, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. The homestay's location was convenient - it was near downtown Motueka and also a 20 minute drive to Kaiteriteri, our access point to Abel Tasman National Park. The property also had beautiful views from the back patio, which was accessible from our lounge. One feedback point - it would have been nice if shampoo, conditioner, and facial tissue were provided. Overall, this place was wonderful, and I highly recommend it!

We don't typically opt for a shared bathroom, but this one was exceptionally clean and standalone, with indoor and outdoor shower options, plus an outdoor bath. If you're part of a group or a family with kids, they also have a large, modern house for rent for about $500. If you choose one of the huts, here are some of the exceptional amenities you can look forward to: - A giant outdoor bath to rest in and look up at the stars (there's even a little chalkboard for "reservations") - A beautifully designed kitchen fully equipped with high quality essentials for cooking and food prep. - A very generous selection of free offerings, including fresh sourdough bread, local rabbit island coffee (the best!) local honey and peanut butter, homemade jam, milk or cream for your coffee, and more. - An even broader selection of treats for purchase, like homemade berry or mint chip ice cream, Nelson wine and beer, canned goods, and more. - A comfortable and clean lounge where you can plan your route with local maps and magazines. The design and decoration of the whole place is truly stunning. - Falling asleep (and relaxing in the bath) to the sound of New Zealand sheep in the surrounding fields - Jane and John (the hosts) are friendly, generous locals who will go out of their way to help you find yours. The Applyby House and Rabbit Island House have our highest recommendation. We happened upon them after we missed the last ferry from Rabbit Island on the Great Taste Trail and it was the best mistake we've ever made. So happy we found this gorgeous, rejuvenating, friendly oasis. We'll absolutely be back...with friends.
