I absolutely loved my stay at this "guesthouse for solo travelers". Being a "solo traveler" the name was the first thing to catch my eye. The historic and restored house was the 2nd. The house alone is just beautiful and was restored immaculately with the perfect blend of antique and modern! Being on a hill, the drive up is a bit nerve-wracking and parking is tight, but the views from the balcony and dining area are worth it! You can also walk up directly from the street via a beautiful wooded stairway.
The room I had was comfy and the communal kitchen, dining, and lounge areas were great. The other guests were all respectful of people's items in the kitchen, which I thoroughly appreciated. It was nice, too, because the mother and son who own the house and run the dental surgery downstairs (where you check-in when you arrive) live on site, so they were interactive w/all the other guests. My first evening there felt very familial with everyone making their dinners and chatting, it was nice.
For me, however, the highlight was the bathroom. Even though it is shared, I never had any issues with access and it was so luxurious! They had a glass-doored shower w/a bathing wand, but the piece de resistance was the Victorian high-back tub. I don't know how long it has been since I have had a bubble bath and a glass of wine, but I loved this place so much I stayed a 2nd night just to make that dream a reality and it was divine!
The price for the room was very reasonable, especially considering the location and the house itself, so if you are in Nelson, this is the place to stay! I even found a great little takeaway spot a 5-min walk from the house and the entrance to Centre of NZ monument is literally 50m away! read more
