From the spinach and artichoke dip to the desert, everything was so well prepared and delicious. I can't articulate enough how good everything tasted. Our server was attentive and friendly while the atmosphere of the restaurant was romantic and charming . The kids were a pain in the........., but that's neither here nor there. That night, as I satisfied my wife's amorous advancements, I could only think about the perfectly prepared Salmon and well seasoned potatoes. Later that night I had dreams about the possibilities of my next meal there. Tossing and turning, I eventually thrusted out of bed awaking myself only to be disappointed to find 4 hours remained from my next opportunity of culinary perfection. Anyway, I digress.....I highly recommend you eat here at least once. Also, if you would like an experience of 180 degrees from what I just wrote, try Katies 33.

We almost gave up on our table when our table was ready. We were all glad that we waited. Fresh bread was warm with a some sort of sweetened butter. I am guessing it was brown sugar, either way it was a hit! Our table had salmon, bronzed, which was delicious. Crab cakes were good and this compliment is coming from a group of Marylander's. Even then broccolini was excellent. Calamari was fresh and crisp, a good mix. I highly recommend the kale and quinoa salad. It was different but a nice mix of flavors with the blueberries. I added the bronzed salmon, which was flaky and tender. The clam chowder didn't come out before the meal, but our waitress caught it and still brought it out. It must have been good because it was gone quickly. No one else even got a taste. We had two kids with us and our waitress made sure that their orders were placed earlier while the adults were still trying to make selections. I was impressed that our service was excellent with such a large party. We were seated in this cute circular booth. Because this place is very popular, give yourself time to wait for a table, enjoy the bar or Neptune Patk while you pass the time. It's worth the wait!

I don't like the contemporary artwork they commissioned for such a historical area. I believe it's supposed to be an interpretation of canoes. But to me it has absolutely no meaning. I don't like the higher sides on the bridge. The view of the Chesapeake Bay beaches on the north & the Lynnhaven Inlet on the south are blocked except at entrance and exit points. I do like the decorative lighting under the bridge, which is beautiful if you're on the Ocean Park beaches. The colors can be changed for events & seasons. In my opinion the artwork that would have been best was one fitting the historical aspects of the location. The Revolutionary War Battle of the Virginia Capes was one between the French Admiral de Grasse and the British fleet. It preceded and was critical to General Cornwallis' ultimate defeat at the Battle of Yorktown. The French Navy prevented evacuation or resupply of his army during their siege of Yorktown. The Lynnhaven Inlet & River has a similar historical significance. The first Jamestown settlers landed at Cape Henry in 1607 before making the mistake of proceeding up the James River to settle at Jamestown Island. While in what would become Virginia Beach John Smith wrote of his exploration of the Lynnhaven River and the huge oysters and seafood they feasted on. The western branch of the Lynnhaven River was the location of the dunking of the only person in Virginia convicted of being a witch. The location of the first Lynnhaven Parish Church, which prosecuted her, was lost to the river's changed path due to an early hurricane. Many decades ago the early tombstones could still be felt under the water before eventually disappearing under the river's silt that covered them. The nooks & outlets of Lynnhaven Inlet were used as a hiding spot for the pirate Blackbeard when he preyed on Virginia shipping. It is said that he had a lookout at Cape Henry & relay stations to make sure the signals reached him at the distance he was located. He is thought to have frequented the Pleasure House, actually a tavern and bar rather than what its name implies in the 21st century. The current Pleasure House Road is named for it. Do I sound like a tourist guide? It's a mode I always enter when I drive visiting friends & relatives around our beautiful & historic city. So there now can be no doubt in your mind that I wanted the new Lesner Bridge to have historic artwork or statues instead of the modern art design chosen. The bridge crosses an area steeped in history, going back to the first English settlers of the New World. Close your eyes and feel the past envelop you.

Who could ask for a better spot than close proximity to the doctor/hospital corridor of First Colonial and the Laskin Road shopping corridor. The only negative to the location is the traffic congestion at certain times of day and the crazy Laskin feeder roads, which should eventually become a thing of the past. Anchoring the marketplace, in the space previously occupied by a major office supply store, is Total Wine. The store is literally a wine and beer superstore. Be prepared to be overwhelmed upon stepping in for the first time. The out parcels consist of a litany of fast food restaurants that can quickly curb your hunger after a longer than expected expected doctor appointment. I mourn the loss of Schlotszky's, which had been my favorite. My replacement fast food favorite at the marketplace is Chick-fil-A. You'll also find others. Panera Bread has moved to a stand alone location in the midst of the parking lot, which allowed other stores to move in. The shopping center itself has many other quick and dining in eating establishments, including Moe's and Arby's. At the First Colonial Road end is a French Restaurant, which I haven't yet tried. There's a Pet Store, PetValue that I don't recognize as having other stores in the area. Find Pure Barre, Pearl Vision, New Balance, Langley's Credit Union, Michael's, LabCorp, FedEx, several boutiques, a cupcake store and much more. From First Colonial the easiest entrance is to turn on Republic Road then into the large parking lot. There is also an entrance from the feeder lane on Laskin Road and an entrance on First Colonial. Marketplace at Hilltop is a very well placed and useful shopping choice.

The shopping center was developed in the mid 90's and completion occurred in 1997. The strip with out lying businesses on the corner of Laskin and First Colonial is quite expansive. Parking is plentiful and the lot has newer blacktop and striping. Debris is typically scarce as the leasing agent Venture does a fantastic job. Landscape is high quality and maintained weekly. The Laskin side recently had construction and new grass is being seeded. Signage is on both Laskin, which is considered the main entrance and Republic. There are dozens of businesses with anchors Total Wine and Michaels are the largest. Panera, Langley FCU and Le Yaca are also large square footage wise. Perimeter anchors off the road are Sun Trust Bank on the corner, Chick Fil A and Chipotle. A former Jason's Deli has been vacant for months and awaits a new tenant. The stores I like and frequent the most are Total Wine, Chick Fil A and Le Yaca. Panera can now be included with a new store and drive-thru service. A very popular store that I've never been in is Orange Theory. I constantly see foot traffic in and out. Also Moe's Southwest Grill is busy. I can't hide my excitement for this well maintained shopping center. It has stores I love and a location that's just minutes from the Oceanfront. I will continue to enjoy shopping and eating at Hilltop Marketplace businesses.

It is reminiscent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but instead of stars on the ground, there are granite plaques on tall brick pillars. It is a self guided tour, whose honorees are Virginians, by birth or residence, who have made a significant contribution to the nation and the world. Some of the honorees include Woodrow Wilson, Edgar Allen Poe, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Pearl Bailey, Booker T. Washington, Arthur Ashe, Patsy Cline, Thomas Jefferson, Pocahontas and Captain John Smith. Inductees can be nominated by anyone, but are officially chosen by judges from various backgrounds such as the heads of various historical societies, college presidents , and the heads of public libraries. There is an annual event to announce the newest additions to the Legends Walk. Be sure to check both sides of the pillars. That is where you will find plaques. This is a living attraction, with lots of room for expansion. (just see that spaces available to place a plaque on the pillar). Oceanographer Mathew Fontaine Maury and bluegrass musician Ralph Stanley were inducted as the Class of 2019. It is relatively easy to get to and is marked with a huge archway on each side of it. There is metered street parking and a few commercial lots within walking distance that you can park at to visit here. The meters cost about $2/ hour and the lots vary in price depending on what is going on and the season. There were a few urban campers taking a nap and hanging out while I was there. And the place could be a bit cleaner and maybe a little maintenance. The bronze plaques could also use some periodic polishing. All in all, it is still an attraction to see in Virginia Beach. It is not a destination spot though and would be best if it was visited during a trip to the boardwalk or one of the other local attractions.
