The produce at Ocean Mart is varied and fresh. The employees are knowledgeable and friendly - when you can find one. The store has a large variety of fresh and dried mushrooms, which I like to use for boosting umami, among other things. I don't frequent this place, though, because of the inevitable long checkout lines. Often I want to grab some fresh watercress and maybe one other thing, but they never have enough checkout registers manned. If they had one express checkout available at all times it would improve the service and I'd drop in more often. read more

Large, Asian grocery store that is a god-send for Utah, but anyone who's shopped at the large Asian groceries on the West coast (hello, Ranch 99 and Uwajimaya) knows that Ocean Mart is a bit of a cluster f*ck. Fresh veggie section is large and open, but all the other aisles of spices and sauces, noodles and rice, the frozen section and home goods are all a bit difficult to navigate. If you have time to dig, you can find great items and interesting ingredients. But if you're looking to just pop-in and buy a pantry staple, it can take some time to find and the sales associates can be far from helpful. When I ask where something is located, they just tell me an aisle number and leave me to my own means. Sometimes their directions are right, sometimes not. The plus side of this, and most Asian grocery stores, are the prices are inexpensive. You can leave with a lot for your money. WARNING! Never take your curious white friends here if you don't want to be bombarded with a million questions. Leave them in the car! I will keep this review short on three key main points, since I feel like anything else I might say will just echo other reviews below already. Alright let's get it started and over with. Firstly, this place has an awesome selection of live seafood including crabs and lobsters, and sometimes even blue crabs. Additionally, if you purchase anything from their fish or squid from the back they will prepare them for you and take care of the gutting part in a blink of an eye. The seafood I've bought from here have always been so much fresher and are also more affordable than any other oriental markets I've been to in the state. Secondly, they carry a much larger selection of Asian veggies and fruits than the other places as well. This also includes the variety of dried and pickled fruits which seem to have its own isle. The fruits and veggies here always seem to stay fresh for much longer than when bought elsewhere. Lastly, the L&P food court within the store itself serves up some crazy dishes that I've tried and liked. From chicken feet, beef shank, pork shank, tripe, duck tongue, roasted duck, BBQ pork, various noodle soups, to boba, teas, and smoothies. Give this place a go if you haven't. It's totally worth the drive. And if you plan to check out their food court, don't go on Tuesdays as it will be closed. read more

HEART THIS PLACE! Fresh Asian veggies with a terrific selection. Random Asian goods that aren't even in some Ranch 99's in CA. Big meat section in the back with cuts and types of meat and fish I wouldn't know what to do with. Ocean Mart has become my go-to grocery store for all things Asian. The place really does smell like the armpit of the Pacific Ocean, but it's never deterred me from making the trip to the south side of the valley to stock up on Asian products and ingredients. It's a true one-stop place to get anything you need for most Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Indian goods. Some of the recommendations I make when shopping at Ocean Mart are: Gai Lan - China's version of broccoli. It has a broccoli like stock but then sprouts into a vegetable that closely resembles spinach. More like a beef or chicken stew served over sticky rice. It's very easy to make but I've noticed it usually takes people a few tries before they acquire a taste for it. But once you do, there is no better comfort food on the planet. I recommend Vermont brand #3 (hot). Sriracha Sauce - Everybody knows what this stuff is by now. The reason for stocking up on it here is that they sell it for about half the price as they do in grocery stores. Kim Chi- The tastiest way possible to get a good dose of probiotics. Living in Utah has meant little or no access to the stuff that I used to buy in Chinatown or Clement Street when I lived in San Francisco. However, that changed about a year ago when I learned about Super China Market from a friend at work. Initially, I thought it would be a little mom and pop store like the few shops I've frequented in Utah but I was wrong. Super China is an old hardware store and by Utah standards, the place is huge. You'll find just about everything you need for Asian cooking from food to equipment. The best part for me, since I'm so out of practice with my Chinese (Cantonese is all right but my Mandarin sucks - LOL) is that people speak English. When you first step into the store, you'll see a very small food court. There's the typical Americanized Chinese food and then there's what I call the "Chinese soul food", i.e., stomach, feet, tendon, etc. That's the stuff that I like! My kids love the steamed pork buns, the noodle soup and wonton. There's a dish that I order that isn't on the menu - stir fried rice noodles with beef. My wife (who is white) says it's part of the secret menu that only us Chinese know about. LOL Along the west side of the store you'll find plenty of fresh vegetables including several not usually found in western markets, e.g., bitter melon, Chinese broccoli, etc. In the back of the store, you'll find an old fashion butcher shop/fish market. Then there are aisles and aisles of frozen to dried goods filled with stuff that you'd find in your average Asian home. I live in Utah County and make the drive up the Super China about once a month. If you have a chance, wander in to check things out. If you've never been outside of Utah, this will give you a small glimpse of what it's like to shop in San Francisco's Chinatown. Warning: place is packed during the week before Chinese New Year. Those little old Chinese ladies can be aggressive if you're not paying attention. It is absolutely a convenient Asian store located in sandy area . I found most of the ingredients for everyday dish here. and it is very close to where i live so +2 for that. However, the customer service there is horrible! Especially those two men working in the meat section. You don't feel welcome to come any close to that section and they ignore you even when you are standing in front of counter for a long time. so - huge for that. Very unpleasant experience. Moreover, I suggest you to check the expiry date or best before date before you buy anything. Finally! Utah has a one-stop location for your Asian food cravings! Snacks, drinks, spices, sauces; I would say this place has it all. Some of my favorite things to buy here are the mochi ice cream, ramen noodles, various snacks, and curry. I just noticed they started selling boba drinks now :) Try the coconut milk tea, it's delicious! A minor observation, but one of the things I like about this market is that the aisles aren't narrow and the place itself is quite spacious. Along with the Delta Center, the E-Center, and My Dough Girl, Super China is one of those places I refuse to accept a name change for. I love Super China because they have such a wide array of grocery items as well as their own hot foods and boba area. Boba?! Yes. Boba. Included with Lollicup and Lunaberry, Super China is one of the few places I actually trust getting my boba from in Utah. Having been spoiled with amazing boba all the time while I lived in California, it saddens me that my options are so limited here. But anywho, apart from the wonderful boba (btw, they make awesome milk tea), going back to their selection, it's massive. The beauty about this location is that they're not cramped for space like other places located around redwood and 35th and southeast market. When my husband and I moved to Utah, I thought I would be completely devoid of all Chinese/Korean/Japanese food. Thankfully, Ocean Mart provides (so far) everything I need to cook my favorite meals. Spices, sauces, cooking wine, all the frozen dumplings/buns you could ever want. Butcher is great too, just your traditional butcher at an Asian market :). If you're from California, it is similar to a 99 Ranch Market, but more local/family-owned. Their Pearl Milk Tea/Boba is mediocre compared to Taiwan or Tapioca Express, but it suffices. One thing I would recommend is to get your Kimchi from the Oriental Food Market on 600 S 700 E in SLC. More variety and I think the kimchi they carry tastes better. I still haven't found a great traditional Chinese restaurant though. read more

This has been the best asian market I've been to yet since moving here to SLC. they had durians and rice cakes, frozen mochi and fresh fish. The smell when I grabbed a shipping cat from outside wasnt of fish but of familiar siopao and other delicious Chinese bakery goods. They have a decent selection of tea sets and Asian cookware. I got excited at their chopstick area and an aisle dedicated to noodles, although the stores in Vegas are much larger with better selection. The prices are reasonable and found the sweetened red bean paste I needed. I wish they carried a larger version fruits and veggie section and had more Korean, filipino and Japanese food items like the smaller packs of nori, bogoong, refrigerated ramen noodles and broth. I'll be back for those siopao and Red bean buns. And yakult! read more

I freaking love this place!! They seriously have everything you would go to China Town for. I have made it a point to come here every weekend. I love that I'm able to get all the authentic asian products here. The prices may be a little steep on some items, but I don't mind it because where else am I going to get these things for less? I mainly come here for the candy and drinks haha. I love that they always bring in new things, but sometimes hate that an item I bought and loved last week is no longer on the shelf the next week. It's also nice that they are right next to the State Liquor Store. Some of my favorite things to buy here are the Thai Teas, Pearl Milk Teas, Frozen Seafood, Ramen, Chocolate, Snacks, Candy... everything. Time for an update - I was here today for pho ingredients and found virtually everything I needed, including spicy vinegar chili chicken paste. Ohh, sweet mystery of life, at last I've found you... Dried black fungus mushrooms, colossal-size Sriracha, Boba tea, Golden Mountain sauce, and a half-gallon of peanut oil were also on my agenda. Ocean Mart came through on all fronts. And by the way, I go through a metric ton of Sriracha about every month. When I fail to plan ahead, and end up having to buy it at the regular grocery store I pay at least 50% more for it than I do at Ocean Mart. (This goes for just about everything else at OM that can be found at a regular store, too.) I also picked up a new bamboo wok spatula for $1.79. You can't even beat that with a stick. I appreciate that Ocean Mart tries to be the one stop shop for all different types of ethnic asian cuisine. I can come here and get everything I need to make Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, and Korean fare. In Ca I'd have to go to different markets to complete my ingredient search. The demographics don't warrant separate ethnic markets in the SLC area and Ocean Mart does a great shop of amassing things that everyone needs to cook their favorite Asian fare. I recently started getting boba from here b/c I wanted somewhere closer to go on days when I can not drive all the way to West Valley. I am glad I did. The boba here is really delicious. The consistency and chewiness of the boba is right on. I have only tried the regular bubble tea but I like how it is a little more bitter and not super sweet. It is the perfect combination of flavor. I also love that they sell so many asian pastries!!! I love their red bean buns, taro buns and their coconut buns. They are all so well made and so cheap! This market is one of the bigger Asian supermarkets out here in Utah that I have found, and I'm sure glad that I live close by. You can find all your basic neccessities like rice, noodles, meat, veggies, sauces, spices, dishware, snacks, etc. Another benefit to this place is that there's a pretty decent food court with a variety to chose from when you dont feel like cooking. I've only tried a few things from here so I really cant comment much of their food yet. Another plus is that it's right next to the state liquor store. One of only Asian store that is big enough have most of Asian grocery. Surprisingly, this Asian grocery store doesn't smell fishy. I pretty much find most Asian stuff here but I do not like their rice flour brand and their irregularly restocked item. Maybe they are experimenting. For example, I like a specific packaged noodle. One day, they stopped carrying it. Half year passed, it is back on the shelf. Now, it is gone again. To most of people, their vegetable price is pretty cheap. Compare their prices with Denver's Asian markets, it is more expensive. I tried to bring my parents or my CO friends here, 1st thing they said, "Aiya! so expensive in Utah!" I guess since this is the only main Asian grocery store in SLC, they can charge whatever they want? I enjoyed their food court a lot because the authentic cheap Chinese food. Except the boba drinks. I love this place. If you're cooking any sort of Asian Food, this place likely has what you need, from dozens of bean pastes to bizarre frozen whatchamacallits to dried spicey cuttle fish and lychee pudding. I sort of want to just walk down the isles and grab a few random things, buy them, and take them home just to figure out what in the heck they even are and make them into a dish. They also have a small behind the counter deli and eatery place. It smells weird, but I think that's normal as far as places like this go. I've never been to one that didn't have a funky aroma. It adds to the experience. The check out lines can be a bit slow and rarely do they have more than one or two open. There aren't a lot of employees around to help you out, so go prepared with a list of exactly what you need. You'll encounter a few varieties if each ingredient, so just buy one and if it sucks, you'll know better for next time. Do not expect your items to have English instructions or labels. Some of them do, but it's not the norm. Oh, and the candy and treats section is pretty epic. Lots of interesting vittles. In my opinion, the prices are fair and I never leave having felt like I was ripped off. Overall, it's a good experience. If it's your first time, feeling a bit overwhelmed is normal. The first thing you should do upon entering Ocean Mart is turn right, and approach what initially appears to be like any other Chinese cafeteria-style counter you might find in Smith's or at the mall. But instead of a combo plate of orange chicken, beef and broccoli, and fried rice, you can get a combo of pork ears, duck tongue, and chicken feet. I passed myself, but it's nice to know it's there :). Anyway, I've a feeling we are not in Panda Express anymore, Toto. Ocean Mart is as close as we Utahan's can get to Hong Kong, or any China Town in any major American metropolitan city. It's got everything that anyone interested in real and authentic oriental cooking would need. More than you or I will ever sample in a lifetime. Go look for yourself. It's great. If you know the Southeast Market near Liberty Park, it's pretty much the same. Both of these places deserve five stars. Its pretty great! It smells awful which is a given and not being asian you stick out pretty bad. But their prices are great and their products are authentic. It is difficult though because most of their products are imported direct from "asia" so the language on the packages is not english so 95% of the products, I dont know what they are, they do their best to label aisles, but again, no idea what any of the packages say so it does limit what to buy. Super China Market is the KING of Asian markets. This place really is a supermarket with the widest variety of products I've seen at any Asian store. They an amazing selection of fresh, frozen, and prepackaged foods alone with home goods like pots and pans, woks, and decorations. This one has also been on the radar forever and is the probably the most reminiscent of what I come to expect in an Asian market, which is lots and lots, shelves, actually, of exotic food stuffs, plenty of people and precious little room to move around in. Definitely hits all of the right authentic notes there. If that's not your thing (American grocery stores, for instance, go to great pains to avoid this exact situation), though, you will probably hate it. That aside, there are a lot of duplicates here and this is not a particularly good choice for quick in-and-out stuff. There is a pretty good variety of Korean and some Indian and Japanese foods here as well, but primarily this seems to be mostly Chinese and Vietnamese. Pricing is about on the level of the other ones around and this did seem to have a solid air of cleanliness around it, which is not always the case with these kinds of places. It is not as immaculate as, say, the Chinatown Supermarket, but that thing is considerably newer as well. I would put the selection here a touch lower than there, especially in the prepared food front, but both of them are pretty strong in this area. If I lived closer, I would probably hit this place up more, maybe if I couldn't find something I really really wanted elsewhere, but for me, it is not a destination spot. No denying, though, that they're coming way correct with the stock. read more

Hands down; Ocean Mart is the best Asian market in SLC. The selection is decent, but there are some items they don't have where the stores in California would. Decent selection of Asian vegetables and staples. I haven't tried their meats but they all seem to be fresh looking. The best thing is they have the Marigold ice cream from the Philippians.
