    Farmers Market Walnut Creek

It's my first malasada experience outside of Big Island so I had to try! It's not piping fresh hot but I have to say the consistency donut was just right; sweet, light and fluffy with the mango & lilikoi filling. Enjoyed every sugary bite. Staff was very friendly and had such a good attitude @ Sunday's Farmer'sMarket Walnut Creek. Looking forward to trying more flavors. Best of Luck! MAHALO

At the San Ramon Farmers Market!

We stumbled across Ocean Malasada at the San Ramon Farmer's Market! I was there closer to noon, and unfortunately most of their flavors sold out. I've never had a malasada myself so I didn't have much to compare it off of, but nonetheless they were enjoyable and still good. I tried the sweet cream and haupia since it was one of the few flavors they had left! They were fluffy and sweet as expected, and the sweet cream was at just the right level of sweetness. A bit more filling would've been appreciated but that was probably my only note. Out of the two, I really enjoyed the haupia since I'm a big fan of coconuts. The malasadas didn't blow me out of the park - they ranged probably around $5 to $6 a piece. Regardless, they were still tasty and a nice sweet treat to have :)

Ocean Malasada Company sell the closest malasadas to those in Hawai'i. With that being said, it is unsatisfying compared to a more authentic company such as the famous Leonard's Bakery in Oahu, HI. The company has wonderful flavoring, however, the quality of the malasada slightly unappealing. Each malasada is priced between $5-$6 depending on if you get it plain or filled. In my opinion this is a bit overpriced for the quality of the malasada. When I got them at the San Ramon Farmer's Market, I got a variety of flavors such as Nutella, Ube, Lilikoi, and Passionfruit. The malasadas did not taste very fresh and they lacked a lot of filling. I wish they were freshly fried and I think this would slightly improve the quality. I also wish there was more filling so that you could have an abundance of flavor in each bite. I also felt as if the dough was more like a doughnut and less like a malasada. It was quite fluffy and light rather than being denser than a normal doughnut. Overall, the Ocean Malasada Company has a very unique approach to the malasada industry. While it is not what I am used to, I appreciate the effort in bringing creative flavors to their version of a malasada and I hope to see them grow as a company by selling at places other than farmers markets.

Based on my experience from when they had a booth at the Sunset Mercantile in SF: Fluffy, soft, and sugary malasadas! Loved the flavorful fillings inside each one of these treats. The guava had a nice tartness to it and the coconut was very fragrant (if you like coconut jello you'll love this). I defenitely appreciate that the flavors are prominent while keeping the creaminess of the filling. 'Til next time for more flavors to try!

First of all, if you are familiar with malasadas, I know what you are going to ask: "Are they as good as Leonard's Malasadas in Honolulu?" And the answer to that question is . . . going to have to wait until the end of this short review. We had been following Ocean Malasadas on Instagram for a while. They have a number of pop-ups but we have never been able to make it. Finally, we saw that they would be selling malasadas on Fridays at Takahashi Market in San Mateo (see cross-review there) and so we went there. We did not pre-order simply because there are only two of us in our mid-50s (!) (where the time go?) and we just can't start the day eating multiple doughnuts. Thankfully, when we arrived (around 11:30am) there were still "non-reserved" malasadas for sale. We bought a hapia (coconut) and it was delicious! The hapia filling was not too heavy but really tasted coconut-y. The malasada itself was not greasy or heavy in that way. So were they as good as Leonards? It's hard to say. In a way, they are simply different. Kind of like comparing a Krispy Kreme donut to a Johnny Doughnuts doughnut. They are different animals. If you are looking for a "Leonards-type" malasada, I will say that you might be disappointed. But if you have an open mind, I would say that these are the best malasadas that we've had in the Bay Area.

I've been following them on IG for awhile. When will I have an opportunity to try their malasadas? That day came this morning. We got on our ebikes and headed northwest from home. It's all downhill. We entered the barricaded area of the Outer Sunset farmers market and mercantile walking our ebikes through. Ocean Malasadas isn't really with the cooked food area. We kept looking & looking. It's another long block over. We stopped & parked our bikes. I read the menu selection. It's got to be guava for me. Hubby likes anything custard filled so he went with flan. We ate our malasadas right then and there. The filling was perfect with the sugared donut. Not too heavy and not too greasy. We'll have to make another trip. And bring our coffee.

Guava malasada. First couple bites had little filling and were dry

I don't like giving less than 4 or 5 star reviews, this is probably more like a 3.5 but will mark it a 4 as the person working the booth was really nice and the filling was delicious. Got the guava filled malasada and it was pretty good but every malasada I eat is compared to Leonard's in Oahu and there really is no comparison. Nothing compares...this one had a nice guava filling--I only enjoyed the bites with the filling. Otherwise the donut part felt a little dry. Probably just bc it's not made fresh on site. It's a nice option at the farmers market though.

Guava, ube, and haupia filled malasadas

Finally got a chance to try their malasadas thanks to their pop-up at Takahashi Market on Fridays. Loved the fluffy and slightly chewy dough. Got the ube, haupia, and guava filled ones. They're coated in sugar as soon as you choose your flavors. My favorite was the haupia. It tasted like coconut cream. The guava was a little sour and only had a hint of guava flavor. And the ube was a bit pasty and doesn't taste like the typical ube flavor, it was not strong. Definitely a good treat to pair with the goodies at Takahashi Market.

Charcoal, Red Velvet, Hot Coca Malasadas

Came across this stand at Emperor Norton's Holiday Bazaar. I had heard good things about their ube filled malasadas, so was saddened to hear they weren't serving it here. Also, it seemed they were offering no filled malasadas at all. It's a pretty small kiosk, so no deep fryer, which might explain why in the afternoon the malasadas didn't taste that fresh either. Hot Cocoa: Pretty dry. The cocoa lightly sprinkled on top didn't really carry through. Red Velvet: It was red. And it was a tad moister than the other ones. But without any sort of cream cheese frosting, it's not really red velvet. Charcoal: Looks fun, like a lump of coal. Doesn't really taste like charcoal, thankfully. Kinda bland overall and a tad dry.

Amazing Malasada spot in the Bay Area! I was so happy I was able to find these folks on instagram. I've been missing malasadas ever since my trip to hawaii. Leonards is the standard to compare it to. Ordering was simple, order via their website and set a pick-up time. When you arrive at location, call/text them and they'll hand you your order. Portion wise, it was a good size Taste waste, was amazing Guave Leche Flan Lilikoi Cream Ube What I wish for? - MORE FILLING, the ratio of doughnut to filling ratio is sad

Assorted - Traditional, Haupia, Ube, Guava.

I have to say; I am not at all disappointed after the process taken to place an order of malasadas. It was worth it. This is a Home-based business; for this reason some customers may have the impression that showing up to their physical address is going to get them malasadas. This is why Ocean Malasada recommends to: "Please don't show up without placing an order". (It would be nice if their malasadas were available more often or in more shops). Ocean Malasada does "Preorders only". I placed an order for the assorted box - Traditional; coated in simple sugar. Guava; guava-flavored custard, filled and coated in sugar. Haupia (Coconut)-flavored custard, filled and coated in sugar. Ube; ube-flavored custard, filled and coated in sugar. All four flavors were delicious, dough was light and fluffy, not too-oily. Custard was sweet, but now overwhelmingly. I plan to order more of this malasadas, of course, when pre-orders are available on their website.

Ube filled malasadas. Bites of joy

Ocean Malasada is a new hidden gem in SF. Malasadas are doughnuts of Portuguese origin popular in Hawaii. It's a treat that this family whipped out their homemade recipe for everyone to enjoy since so few places make these. The size of these amazing creations is like a hacky sack that can fit in the palm of your hand. They are chubby and loaded generously with filling. I ordered six ube and six guava filled malasadas to share. You can order 6 or a baker's dozen. My brother-in-law said they are comparable to Leonard's in Oahu. The dough was AH-mazing and the filling excellent and not overwhelmingly sweet. It's a delectable treat that goes perfectly with coffee (Kona blend of course). They are best when warm. I can't wait to try other flavors like haupia or coconut that they make at other times. If you are lucky to make it to one of their pop-ups, you are in for a great taste. Otherwise, you would have to order online and pick-up. Follow them on Instagram or Facebook to see where they "pop-up." I subscribed to their e-mail list on Facebook, was contacted soon after for which flavors were available, placed an order online Friday, and picked up Sunday. Order now before their business booms and they'll have a waiting list. It will happen!

    Traditional malasadas

Came for the Father's Day pop up at around 925 and the line was already down the block. We waited for about an hour, when we got to order they sold out of the guava and chocolate malasadas we could only order the traditional ones. We were so sad, but we will probably come by to try the other ones in the future. The traditional one was light, fluffy and soft, made it even bette that it was still warm. It does get a bit messy so do have napkins on hand! Definitely was reminiscent of Leonard's in Honolulu! Hopefully next time we can try the other flavors! Total for 6 malasadas: $18

Custard Malasada (left) and Guava Malasada (Right). Uuuuber delicious!!! Reminds me of Hawaii.

How do I put in an order for tomorrow or can I show up and pick the ones I like?

They didn't have a store front?

No they don't. Their location in Daly City is a kitchen where they make the malasadas. You'll have to look on their website or follow them on social media to see when they take orders for pick ups in Daly City or when they have a pop up event.

There was a few dishes that wasn't as successful but overall everyone enjoyed the food. We had pre arranged to have someone to meet the catering staff early for setup but due to unknown delays they did show up until an hour before the service started which also ment they were rushed to setup the food but they did a good job to get the hot and cold foods setup before the end of the service. Overall they did a good job and the food excellent but arriving late to the event and poor timing to replenish empty dishes was disappointing also dessert wasn't served until most guest departed. I was so happy when they renovated the store under new ownership. It's on the smaller side, but…read morethey really make it work, everything is super clean, organized, and well-stocked. They carry a great variety of Korean dishes, snacks, and marinated meats, basically everything you need. The food from the kitchen is solid and nicely packaged, and the pan-fried kimbap is a must. They also have a wide selection of banchan, which I love. I'm genuinely impressed with how they've maximized the space while keeping it so clean and efficient. I would skip the frozen meats though as they are overpriced. With Safeway closed, this has been such a convenient nearby alternative. Parking can be a bit tricky, there is a back lot, but much of it is closed off since the Safeway shutdown.

I went to the hot food section, conveniently located right at the entrance, and the Korean fried popcorn chicken caught my eye. Then next to it was japchae, one of my favorite noodle dishes. I found my dinner. The crunch on the chicken was addicting! Yet, the breading wasn't thick. The chicken itself was juicy and the glaze was savory and sweet. The japchae was full of veggies, and had a nice umami flavor. The store is small, but they have a lot of items that I can't find close by, like the plant-based beef rice balls. The closest Korean market to me closed, so I'm glad for this one as it's easily accessible by bus and not too far away from my place. I'll be coming back here again soon.
