Great teachers. Very patient and kind. Spend the proper amount of attention to everyone in the class.

As a coach myself, I deeply understand the importance of having support on my own journey of growth. Working with Sifu has been transformative, especially during challenging times in my life. His genuine care, professional guidance and ability to create a safe space allowed me to explore my blind spots and grow and learn through difficulties rather than just going through them. Through our work together, I've not only strengthened my body, but also grown my mental resilience muscles and gained new tools to manage my energy better, so I can show up at a higher level for myself as well as my clients. Sifu's blend of wisdom, compassion, and professional expertise makes him an exceptional coach and mentor. I'm grateful for the opportunity and the gift of working with him! In 2020, I was experiencing a high level of stress and anxiety. A family member suggested that I try the introductory meditation course. During Covid, "wellness" was exploding as a trend, and I entered the class (via Zoom at the time) with a healthy skepticism. To my surprise, there was no humming, no chanting, no sitting with my legs tangled in a pretzel. Within just a few weeks, I had already acquired some surprisingly simple, yet powerful tools. I'm talking about science-based breathing mechanics and mental training that can take your racing mind and put it back in neutral in just a few minutes. The best part is that you can do this almost anywhere - at home, at work, if you can get in a comfy chair and carve out a little bit of quiet time, you can learn to release that tension and anxiety that sneaks up on you during your day. Along with these mechanical lessons, the class explores the psychology of how we let our thoughts and concerns get the best of us, and imparts powerful insights for keeping them in check. The temple Sifu (Paul McIntyre), is one of the best teachers I've known in any field. He's warm, welcoming and humorous. Classes are fun and engaging, and he has a real gift for presenting complex topics in easily digestible lessons. His genuine passion for the subject and desire for his students' success is evident and inspiring. I strongly recommend this class for anyone and everyone. Even if you don't have the time or inclination to become a "serious meditator" doing sessions for hours on end, anyone would benefit from the core lessons and simple mechanics that can quickly right your ship and get you back to enjoying your day. read more

Let's start with my results after 4.5 weeks: *Lost 9 pounds of Body Fat *Gained 1.5 pounds of Skeletal Muscle *Sleep more Deeply *Look Lean and Toned *Enjoy Every Workout and the Food I am Eating I asked Coach McIntyre for a simple system I could follow to achieve my goals along with accountability and a community/social support. Lai Kune Do has provided me with all of those things and more. The nutrition program is EXACTLY what I needed. It is so easy to follow and I feel fantastic and am moving towards my goals in a sustainable way. I enjoy everything I am eating. I know how to eat out with friends. Coach McIntyre gave me the foundation for a new lifestyle rather than a "diet" to follow. I plan to live this new lifestyle for the rest of my life. I LOVE Coach Jill's Yin Yang Fit workouts, and they are also exactly what I need to achieve my goals. She keeps me having fun and motivated to push myself to achieve my personal best! Coach McIntyre listened to what I told him about what works for my body and chose the best path & coach to help me achieve my goals. I am a breast cancer survivor and have post-operative lymphedema, so I needed a workout, nutrition, and whole-body health system where I would be advised how best to work within my limitations while safely progressing to success. Today I deadlifted 90 pounds and did snatches and weighted sit-ups with 30 pounds! My lymphedema therapist who is internationally renowned, said that in her multi-decade career, I am only the 3rd patient she has seen reverse their lymphedema - that is all thanks to Coach McIntyre and the program he designed for me. Coach McIntyre and his team have provided me with leadership, a community, and accountability to help me realize my goals. I am healthier, happier, and feel better than ever! I began training in tai chi in 1974. Over the decades I learned several forms as well as other internal arts. The first time I visited the Lau Kune Do temple, I was immediately impressed by three things: (1) the depth of knowledge of Sifu McIntyre, (2) the professionalism of the school, and (3) the sincerity of the students. I joined the following week. Since then, I have yet to come away from a class without learning a subtle nuance or an application of a tai chi concept. If you want to take your internal training to a new level, this is the school for you. Highly recommended. read more

Several years later I am still training under Sifu Mcintyre and calling Lau Kune Do my home away from home. This school has blossomed from a place where you can work on yourself to a place where any avenue for self improvement can be explored. Sifu Mcintyre has a wide breadth of knowledge he is happy to pour into you in regards to Traditional Chinese Gung Fu or Taiji. However now he offers nutritional coaching, balance classes, FRC classes to not only reclaim lost mobility but also improve current mobility, Meditation classes to calm your mind and be the person you want to be on a consistent basis. Never have I been anywhere you can work on every avenue of who you as a person and what you are trying to accomplish. You really can make yourself into the person you want to be. To me what's most remarkable about Sifu Mcintyre as a teacher is he always leads by example in every moment of his leadership. Just as he pushes me and his other students to be their very best he is constantly refining and honing his own knowledge and skillset. Much of the richness that he has brought into his school comes from his own continuous desire to improve himself. Because of his own unique work ethic and approach to teaching martial arts, as a student I have gotten immeasurable benefit . A telling example is the nutritional coaching. Under Sifu I've been very fortunate to learn how to properly fuel my body in order to achieve my goals. I no longer feel frustrated looking in the mirror or stepping on the scale. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention what brought me here in the first place. The Martial arts is in a word: Epic. From traditional Wing Chun, to Hunggar, followed by the Shaolin Sifu teaches. It Constantly challenges you whilst exhilarating you sometimes the challenge feels impossible but in time you'll find you've accomplished more then you thought possible. One of the best things I've done for my life is enrolling at Lau Kune Do. read more

Who would have thought that I'd still be here 2 1/2 years after I started training in Taijichaun? Yes, I am still here, and my previous, early reviews still hold true. Sifu Paul McIntyre has been every bit the mentor I was looking for. He is incredibly patient, an exceptional teacher and a very talented martial artist. He is the sort of person who you just look forward to being around, and who can give you just the bit of insight you may need with a few words. He always seems to know what I need to hear, and knows when to challenge me and when I need to sit where I'm at for the time being. I came to this temple during a very difficult time, and with some unusual medical issues. From my earliest days training, Sifu has helped me learn to listen to and read my body and teaches me how to modify what I am doing to gently strengthen and improve mobility. Over the last 2 1/2 years, I have become physically and emotionally stronger, my mood has improved and I am becoming more patient. It has helped me deal with grief, lost dreams, and to learn live in the present. I am better able to find some peace within myself, though I still have a long way to go with that. I have some unusual challenges physically, and Sifu has been very supportive and helpful while I explore how those issue impact my training. Classes may have a few students, or more than a dozen, but Sifu does not just teach a group of people. He knows the skill level and of progress of each student and guides each of us accordingly. I love studying Taijichuan and am glad for every minute I spend here. The other students are a great group of friendly, accepting people, and I am grateful to have every one of them in my life. I could not have more respect for Sifu both as a teacher and the kind of person he is. This is a path I intend to walk for the rest of my life, and I hope to be able to walk it here. Taijichuan looks easy, but it is not. It is challenging physically and mentally. It works its way into your very being. Come. Talk to Sifu. Take a class. You never know were it may lead. read more

A friend suggested I try Tai Chi over the holidays so I googled Tai Chi and Costa Mesa and found this place. The temple is close to my house in Costa Mesa and after reading the reviews I thought that this would be a good place for me. Sifu McIntyre answered my initial email inquiry promptly and after an initial meeting I joined the temple. While I wasn't initially seeking Kung Fu training, I am so glad that I have been learning both Tai Chi and Kung Fu. The disciplines are very complementary and Sifu teaches both with extensive knowledge, integrity and compassion for his students. I can see that I will be growing and learning in ways that I had not anticipated. If you are interested in whole body and mind health as well as self-defense training, check out the website and contact Sifu McIntyre. You'll be glad that you did! read more

I came to Newport Lau Kune Do looking to learn some self defense as well as some calming/meditative techniques. What I discovered was a whole world of carefully cultivated disciplines and a truly committed teacher in Sifu McIntyre. His teaching style is unlike what I've experienced in the martial arts in the past. He has an amazing ability to break down movements for the lay person in such a way that keeps you engaged and interested. While there are no short cuts in mastering the arts I can definitely say his patience and willingness to go the extra mile has helped me tremendously. I feel what I've learned in 10 months is quite remarkable. I can also say that being a parent with small children Sifu McIntyre's teaching talents are also very well suited for children's classes. That's something that not all martial arts teachers can do effectively. I can't wait until my little one is old enough to come take classes as well. Thank you Newport Lau Kune Do! read more

I cannot say enough about how Sifu McIntyre has positively impacted my own and many other's lives thru his example and teaching. I have been training under Sifu McIntyre for 9 years. Sifu's gift is beyond just teaching you a movement or a technique, but teaching you how to train, how to conquer and know yourself. If you are willing to listen and "empty your cup" each time you walk into the door, Sifu can help you to look within to get the most out of anything you are focusing on. Sifu McIntyre offers a multifaceted holistic approach for anyone that chooses to adopt it. With offerings of Kung Fu, Taiji, Qi Gong, Kinstretch, Mediation, Private range of motion assessments, dietary guidance etc., the potentials are endless, especially if a student chooses to take advantage of one or more of the programs. Sifu McIntyre has created a framework to enable a student to explore themselves as a whole person, inside and out, spiritual and physical, for a more balanced approach to their overall training and improvement. Sifu McIntyre is a wonderful teacher and mentor. He cares about each student's growth and gladly nurtures and guides their potential. Training at this temple has truly changed my life for the positive. It has helped ground me and stoked excitement about all the great benefits that this martial arts training has given me, and what is yet to come! Look nowhere else then this temple for your training. It is a lost art, that is found here. read more

I decided to join another class with Sifu! Besides studying Tai Chi with him for about 1 1/2 years now, I started his Building Better Balance class at the beginning of 2020. I have been a student of yoga for over 35 years, yet the Balance class brought a new kind of stability and strength to my feet and legs that is very different. I'm in my late 60's, have had 4 knee operations and a hip replacement, and yet I can say that I have better balance now than I had 25 years ago. I am very grateful to have the honor of being able to be a part of Sifu's Balance Class and look forward to even greater stability and ease being in my body as I continue working with him. Sifu McIntyre is a truly gifted teacher, and I would heartily encourage anyone who is looking for greater balance to try his class. No matter your age or degree of fitness, I'm confident you will find benefit by being with him. Even just doing it virtually now, due to the lockdown, it is amazing how much one can benefit through his invaluable teachings. read more

It's not the place where you practice martial arts. It's the person that is showing you and training you the art. My husband and I have been practicing Kung Fu and Tai Chi for almost a year and we have to say that it's changed our lives. We love our Sifu and our new family. Our Sifu is not only our Kung Fu Master, he is our mentor. I've never met anyone as Zen as my Sifu. He has definitely helped us look at life and many things in a different light. This art has given us the confidence to know that if we were in any situation of danger, we have the tools to get ourselves out of the situation or to defend ourselves. This is a comforting feeling as a woman. Not are we only learning defensive martial arts we are learning more about ourselves. Learning to become more Zen, at piece with ourselves. My husband and I are firm believers that it was not just the art that got us practicing the art. It was the gravitational pull that our Sifu has and when we enter our temple a calm comes over us and all of our troubles and issues are put aside. This our weekly therapy to keep our heads clear and on straight. I highly encourage couples to practice together. My husband and I practice 4 times a week together and it has made us much closer and our bond stronger. It gives us something to do together and it keeps us healthy and in shape. Newport Lau Kune Do and Tai Chi temple is my sanctuary...my piece of mind, it feels like home. Lori Vu read more

I came across this place through Google and it ranked number two in my searches. Like most people I checked out the reviews, the reviews have always helped me in the past. How can you go wrong with what the customers say? Everyone loved the place, I sensed warmth, friendship and spiritual knowledge and nurturing from this place which is all what I'm looking for based from the reviews. I was a bit skeptical and apprehensive but nonetheless excited hoping to have found a good place. What I initially wanted was just to come in maybe once or twice a week for Taichi though I was informed that they also offer Kung Fu all at the same cost. I did Taichi for a month and I loved it so much that I started doing Kung Fu the second month. I now come in two or three times a week doing two hours of Kung Fu and Taichi. It is my new passion! It has helped me find peace, discipline and self confidence. Our teacher/mentor, Sifu McIntyre, is kind, patient, strong and very knowledgeable in Martial Arts. You certainly feel welcome and comfortable with him. His guidance is firm yet kind and he allows you to be all you can be and he will help explain to you each process as methodically as he can. His explanations are pretty simple that everything makes perfect sense, each stance, punch, block, form, etc. I certainly have found a great teacher and a great place to train and I couldn't be any happier. I also love the comradery in this place, everyone is friendly and positive. Come and try it, you won't be disappointed. read more

I joined this Kung Fu class earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed learning this new art. Sifu has great integrity and is extremely dedicated to his family, the art, and his students. Having a patient and dedicated teacher is key to learning a new art form. In addition, we also have a great mix of students whom all are committed to learning, which makes for great support. I have 3 girls under the age of 4, so time is limited. I can only attend 2 classes in a week at most, but with practice, I can still keep up with the rest of the class. I look forward to the classes each week. Reza W. read more

If you are looking to improve your body, your mind, your soul and your life, then look no further! 2 1/2 years ago, I was searching for a place to learn Tai Chi. I had broken my leg and ankle 20 years ago and needed to strengthen my ankle joints and to improve my balance. I was seeking a gentle form of exercise. I wanted to learn those beautiful moves that I'd seen done at parks. I wanted a better connection between my body, my brain and my spirit. I wanted a safe place to learn the Art and a place where I could grow. I talked to Sifu (the Temple keeper) in the afternoon and that night, I started my first group class! Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Beginners, like me, were treated kindly and with respect. I also began weekly one-on-one training with Sifu, which has become the icing on the cake. Individual time with him is invaluable and I cherish the personalized direction, training, encouragement and support. Sifu is a very unique and gifted teacher. He not only trains your body, but, if you are listening, he will help you to enlighten your soul! I am not exaggerating when I say that I am a better person for finding this Temple and Sifu. I am more at peace. My marriage is better. My life priorities are clearer. I have enlarged my spirit of giving and have, in turn, received so much more. My finances are in better order. My mental focus is sharper. I am more forgiving of myself and of others. My stamina and health have improved. My mind/body coordination is so much better. I no longer hold onto railings going up and down stairs because I trust my balance. I have gone on strenuous hikes in Yosemite that I never would have tried a few years ago. When you practice this Art and really absorb its possibilities, it seeps into your soul. It beckons you to pursue it a higher and deeper level, as you continually realize the infinite power that lies within it. The Temple and Sifu have exceeded all of my expectations. I am very grateful to have found this Temple and my Sifu. read more

I don't know much about Kung Fu, Tai Chi or Lau Kune Do however, I do know that the owner is a nice guy and seems to really be good at what he does. Sifu McIntyre was one of my very respected and advanced Sisuk's at the time we trained at Sifu Tsim's Long Beach Temple. I used to watch him train the advanced classes and was inspired. As soon as I passed my yellow sash I joined Sifu Mcintyre's advanced class and I was very nervous being the only girl in the class and knowing the intensity of this particular class. Sifu McIntyre taught me proper etiquette and whipped me into shape. He challenged me...I think he had me spar against these very advanced students the first day. Over time he corrected my forms until they became embedded in my muscle memory, corrected my footwork. He is so precise in his movements and form and I am so grateful that he always made sure my elbows were in, pivots were so important for our kicks and stance and footwork. He helped to transform me and cultivate discipline and confidence. I give him credit for teaching me to focus on the subtleties...It was not until he trained me that I began to understand what some of my movements uses were for. I was grazing through. I had the fundamentals but I did not know what they were for because I practiced with air and did not train enough. However, Sifu really helped me apply the movements and understand them. It was fun! It took me four years to get my yellow sash, I was not in a hurry. I did not even want to fight when I joined the temple, I mainly wanted to cultivate discipline like the Shaolin Monks since childhood. I passed my Red Sash Test a few years back and I don't think I would have been able to do that without Sifu. I still do his insane sit ups every day and practice many gems he gave me and may never know the impact he had on me. Thank you Sifu. I have not had the chance to visit his temple but I know that he is a life changing Sifu and if I lived in the area I would definitely would want to learn from him..I always thought that he was tough with me but I know now that he accommodate's to each students needs in order for each student to grow while instilling inspiration and wisdom. Beats a Psychologist and this method is innately intuitive. Our Sifu Tsim has that special gift also. You all are lucky to have him. Much respect Sifu McIntyre. read more

The old adage that "this is not a marathon, but a journey", is a truism when it comes to Lau Kune Do. After a fateful first meeting with Sifu McIntyre, my Lau Kune Do journey began. I feel extremely honored and blessed to have a teacher and mentor such as Sifu McIntyre. His ability to share his deep knowledge of the arts, and his practical approach in that endeavor, has made the entire experience even more rewarding. As part of the founders group of students at the Newport Beach temple, I have started my training with vigor and excitement. I could not ask for a better Sifu (teacher), fellow students and overall Temple to share in this journey. In addition, I have practiced martial arts in various forms over the years, however none of the others are as balanced and all-encompassing as Lau Kune Do. My participation in Lau Kune Do's external forms of Kung Fu, coupled with internal training in the Tia Chi, Qi Gong and Ba Gua forms, have created a much more balanced and growth accelerating experience. I feel that by encompassing both of these in one's training (external and internal), it can help you learn more about yourself, your potential and enhance your balance, focus, discipline and overall health and well-being. This has been a fulfilling experience thus far, and the journey has only begun! read more

To say over the past 10 months that Newport Lau Kune Do and most prominently Sifu Paul McIntyre have positively affected the lives of my wife and I would be the grossest of understatements. A year ago I had classified myself as an "ex-athlete" as I had thought my athletic past was just that, a chapter in my life long over. I was 31 years old and never thought I'd ever again pursue the Arts or any other physical pursuit save the gym once in a while. I had participated in a multitude of athletics my entire youth and played high school football and collegiate baseball for an ivy league institution. Then, over the next decade, the athletic-self gave way to the corporate-self and on life went devoid of the athletic extracurriculars that I had identified myself with for well over half of my life. Then I met Sifu Paul McIntyre and everything changed. Lau Kune Do as I have come to know it is not simply "fighting" . . . in fact I smile as I write that last statement because Lau Kune Do has proven to be an ocean of positive thinking, a foundation-shaking test of raw physicality and a spiritual awakening all in one. The Art is just so much more than I could have expected for both myself as well as my wife. The profound discovery of the oasis which is Newport Lau Kune Do is wholly due to our Sifu Paul McIntyre who is arguably the most remarkable, positive and inspirational human being I've ever met. "Sifu" as we understand it is Chinese for "father teacher." This being said, Sifu Paul McIntyre is the personification of just that. He teaches as a father to an aspiring child: with patience, positive reinforcement, sage wisdom, humility, and an innate ability to explain to you only what you need to hear in a particular moment, not too little information to leave curiosity unsatisfied but also not too much detail in order to over complicate a particular movement. I consider myself extremely lucky to associate myself with Sifu multiple times each week. He has a direct, honest, humble and selfless approach of expanding the physical and mental capabilities of his students. He cultivates focus and efficiency of movement to help his students grow as both martial artists as well as human beings. At Newport Lau Kune Do, Sifu McIntyre nurtures an environment which while rigorous during training, also feels as safe as home after a long vacation . . . his teaching style is something that simply needs to be experienced in order to appreciate. Even if I were to never attend another class for the rest of my life I feel have already absorbed benefits otherwise unobtainable - all of which will remain eternally usable but then again, all of said benefits just serve to tease me as to where, with dedication and fortitude, my true potential may someday lead me, my wife and someday soon my children. Any yes, my wife and I are well on our way to being able to fully protect ourselves in the event that such skills prove necessary. Thank you Lau Kune Do and thank you, from the depths of me, Sifu Paul McIntyre!!! ****UPDATE - a year and a half into our training, my wife and I are still practicing regularly and have found a permanent place for Lau Kune Do in our daily lives. Life is full of it's ups and downs but our training has become the baseline of positivity which ties each day into the next. Now a senior student, our Sifu has honored my wife and I with the opportunity to each teach a weekly beginner class which is proving to expand my understanding and training in new and exciting ways! I look forward to the challenges which lie ahead of us as it's amazing what we've been able to accomplish over the past 18 months! read more
