The Oaks Theater - Beer, popcorn, plants AND a movie

The Oaks Theater

(27 reviews)

We have been coming to the Oaks for years to see vintage movies and live music. It's even better…read moresince the renovations. Such a cute theater with wonderful staff. It's even better now that there is a bar with lots of good options. Last night we saw the 50th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show which was tons of fun and even made better that they gave you a bag of props to use during the movie. We have also come for Christmas movies like White Christmas and Christmas Vacation and one of my all time favorites Empire Records. It's such a charming theater with great people.

I came to the Oaks to see a comedian. The main reason I…read moregave a three star rating is the seats. They are on the small side and are very uncomfortable if you are a plus size person. My husband had to wedge himself in and barely fit in the seat. When he asked if there were other options, he was told we could sit in the table seating in the back, but we had purchased VIP to sit up close, so he decided to just be a bit uncomfortable rather than be at the back of the theater. I know theaters have tight space and other considerations, but considering they were remodeled not all that long ago, I was surprised about the seat size. The bathroom situation is also a bit of an issue. You need to go downstairs and the set up is a bit strange. There aren't many stalls, and the layout makes it awkward for getting in and out, especially if there is a line. All that being said, it is a lovely theater with friendly staff and fairly affordable concessions. I just wish the seating was more comfortable.

I have lived in Pittsburgh for the majority of my life, but had never been to the Oakmont Country…read moreClub until last month for a wedding reception. When we arrived, there was the option of valet parking or self-parking. We opted to self-park, a got a spot only a few minute walk from the door. The entrance is on the right as you pull in. If you were dropping anything off, there is a governor's drive that you can use to park essentially right next to the front door. The indoor portion is quite nice. There are several rooms likely used for various purposes. For this event, we got to see about 3 or 4 of the different spaces. The room where the cocktail hour was held has a lot of windows, and you can see out into the golf course. There is some seating here, and four the event they had some cocktail tables set up. The ballroom held the 150 person wedding just fine. There is a side room off of the ballroom that was used for the Cookie Table. It had some seating so guests could enjoy their desserts without having to take them all the way back across the ballroom. Also, the restrooms are very nice. In the women's, there is a seating area and plenty of stalls. It is not outdated, but think of a restroom from a by-gone era in terms of layout. They also had various hygiene products On the counter for guests to use. Also used during the cocktail hour and beyond was the back porch area. It also had a good amount of seating, and overlooks some of the holes on the golf course. We were able to get an up close view of the course and walk around a little bit while out there. This was especially cool because this wedding happened about two weeks before the U.S. Open, so they were preparing for that event outside. As stated, this wedding happened right before the U.S. Open. The County Club used some U.S. Open branded cups and napkins throughout the venue for the event. We even got to take some of the cups home as a "souvenir" since they were plastic. Also, wedding guests were able to visit the Pro Shop, and purchase some U.S. Open merchandise. This was a big hit with the crowd! The food served was not bad. We had the option of three plated meals. Most got the Filet Mignon with Mashed Potatoes and Vegetables. Nothing wrong with it, but could have used some more seasoning. The steak was cooked well. The other options were a Lemon Beurre Blanc Salmon or Eggplant Roulade Florentine. The eggplant dish was the favorite of all three, but it was all good. Everyone was also served a salad and bread. The logistics and setup of the event were great. The staff did a great job of executing the event and running it smoothly. The staff here were wonderful. They helped with anything we needed and were very friendly. One of the staff got us some extra U.S. Open cups to take home with us! Also, I made cookies for the Cookie Table and had to drop them off the night prior. The staff then was very helpful and made the drop off process a breeze. Overall, I enjoyed my first visit to the Oakmont Country Club. If you are looking to host an event here, it is a great place to do so. I hope to return in the future! NOTE: Even for a delivery, those coming on premise have to wear either business attire or golf attire. No jeans are permitted.

Attended the 125th US Open on Saturday and all-in-all, it was a pretty cool experience. The amount…read moreof people that attend this event is just insane, but it was very well organized. Never had to wait for a shuttle. It was nice that the route to get to the course allowed the shuttles to use roads that were closed to the public so it took less than 25 mins to get there from the lot where we parked our car. The workers and volunteers were super friendly and welcoming despite working very long hours over the course of the week. And the food - SO GOOD. I wish I took a picture of the crab cake sandwich - it was HUGE. And ALL crab! We were in the Trophy Club for the majority of the day so we had an amazing view of the 3rd fairway with the iconic Church Pews bunker. Really cool spot to see the pros play (and struggle) on this course. The bathrooms were air-conditioned and well-stocked. Waste was managed timely and efficiently, and the entire place was immaculate despite all of the rain. The only area of improvement would be to set up more seating or counters to set down your drink/food because we spent a lot of time walking around looking for a spot to eat. They also had to close several of the crosswalks on Saturday, also due to the rain/mud, which meant bottle-necks of spectators funneling through to get across to the other side of the course. This meant up to 45-60 mins of standing and waiting to cross with nothing to see except the mass of people surrounding you, doing the same thing. They did offer a full refund for your tickets the morning of because access to certain viewing areas of the course would be limited throughout the day. Of course, we still decided to attend knowing full-well that this would complicate navigating the course. I was perfectly happy staying on the side closest to the entrance since that's where most of the amenities were located, but I can see how this would be frustrating for many fans. All-in-all, this experience was definitely worth the cost of admission. The staff and level of organization is what made this experience so memorable!

The Seth Raynor layout boasts template hole designs such as Punchbowl, Eden, Cape, Redan, Alps, and Biarritz. The front nine features more template holes than the back with the inward nine showcasing more hole designs unique to Fox Chapel. Like all Raynor courses, Fox Chapel focuses much more on good architecture and having fun rather than a punishing challenge. The result is a layout that you look forward to playing every time out whether it is with your buddies, spouse, or kids. The family friendly club delivers a parkland layout that caters to all handicap levels with a modest level of forced carries and non grassed areas with additional facilities that include fine and casual dining, a swimming pool, and tennis courts. Raynor conceived a routing that makes it one of the easiest and most enjoyable courses to walk that you'll find, especially considering the rolling terrain. This feature helped Fox Chapel secure the 2002 Curtis Cup and the 2012-2014 Senior Players Championships. The layout also lends itself to Fox Chapel boasting a healthy caddie program with three levels of caddie experience to choose from while those that don't wish to walk being offered a cart for their round. Bottom line, Fox Chapel is a flagship example of how to deliver a club that attracts families through great amenities, service, and a Top 100 golf course that is flat out fun for every handicap level. In conclusion, I wish Fox Chapel was my home course. The routing is a ton of fun with brilliant versions of Redan and Biarritz; my favorite par three designs. From the scratch golfer to the guy taking his family out for a round, Fox Chapel beautifully caters to a wide swath of golfers with the enjoyable architecture that only Seth Raynor could deliver. A top five course in Pennsylvania, don't miss an opportunity to play here.
