Read to the end. It gets good!
This is a place I USED to be proud to call home. For the past year, Oak Park has went downhill FAST!
Don't be fooled! This neighborhood has some SERIOUS issues!
The office staff is nice, BUT they don't want to be bothered by residents. It's CLEAR that they have better things to do and they are not afraid to tell you. They try... they really do... but it's nowhere where it used to be or where it needs to be.
The owners switch management companies several times a year. Why can't they keep staff?
These apartments are falling apart... LITERALLY. Last week, ANOTHER apartment had the ROOF COLLAPSE on them. Fortunately, the occupants were not killed. Don't ask to see the model, because they are living in it while the roof gets fixed. They are not the only ones to live in the model because their roof collapsed.
People have had RAW SEWAGE FLOOD THEM OUT.
My apartment has been flooded by drain water 3 times... 3 TIMES since I moved in. It was only until after I FOUND THE LEAK under the busted concrete floor in my bedroom (which they intentionally covered up with carpet knowing that there was a leak) AND VISITING THE VICE PRESIDENT of the incoming management company did they even come fix it.
GUN VIOLENCE in this area is getting bad. The gas station on the corner has been ripped off twice lately. The last time, a gun was HELD TO THE CLERKS HEAD during a robbery.
GUN SHOTS are heard multiple times every week. Sometimes, they are coming from Oak Park, but mostly from the slummy apartments (Berkley) across the street.
I caught one of the neighbors dealing drugs in person (I confronted them) and on camera and 99% sure they shot a pistol off their balcony 20 minutes later. The management company didn't evict them until after they SHOT THROUGH THE FLOOR INTO A NEIGHBORS APARTMENT... TWICE. Just so happens, that neighbor is an attorney. That got their attention. They put him up in the model because he FEARED FOR HIS LIFE.
2 weeks ago, at least 3 people had their car windows broken by vandals throwing HUGE rocks through them. My 74 year old mom was a victim. This is the 2nd time her car has had a window broken out here in Oak Park. Each window cost $250 to replace
My sister had the contents of her storage locker stolen by who we suspect was a former maintenance man under the direction of management. Included, were all her military uniforms, baby scrapbooks, etc.
Last week, a man came through Oak Park STEALING CATALYTIC CONVERTERS... on 2 DIFFERENT NIGHTS. An armed resident ran him off. Police never caught him.
Tonight, a man wearing a hoodie and a mask came through Oak Park burglarizing cars. According to witness, he tried every car on the street until he got my neighbors car which was left unlocked. My neighbor plans on sitting in his car at night WITH A RIFLE to catch these burglars, thieves, and vandals that run freely through Oak Park.
A few months ago, a burglar climbed on to a second story balcony and stole a stimulus check from an apartment.
Do you think that Oak Park should hire security? I do... and I've asked them multiple times. I'm told is that they are "currently reviewing bids". That's odd to me b/c the only job opening they listed on Indeed is for a maintenance supervisor. Where they are getting security bids from?
EVERY YEAR, OAK PARK RAISES THE RENT to "keep up with market rate". In my opinion, that ARBITRARY AMOUNT is based on what they think they can get out of an apartment. They will say it's based on similar apartments in the area. I REALLY question that because CRIME IS WAY UP and I've personally researched prices.
So, instead of paying the extra $70/month they are demanding when my lease comes up for renewal, I'm looking for a new place to call home.
To sum things up... since management is doing a poor job, maintenance isn't being performed unless it's an emergency, apartments are literally falling apart, and my safety and security is constantly at risk, I DO NOT RECOMMEND renting from Oak Park Apartments until they get their house in order. read more
