On my first visit one of the owners was present and really explained the menu gave suggestions etc. He explained how they started everything. it was really appreciated since our server was new so it was a training tool for her. He even told us about the upcoming food truck battle that the other owner was at. Hopefully they won! I believe he said the show would air on the food network in April. Our food was delicious, service was great . Made for a great Saturday afternoon. Now our second visit wasnt as great with service our food was still delicious . There were a few questions we had that the server could not answer. We had asked if we could just buy a couple of additional wings so that we could try a different sauce and also be able to take them home. Since she couldn't find the key on the register we believe the answer is no but she did know that they had did it before but wasn't sure how . We just so happen to be the only couple in the restaurant during the last visit. Once we paid the bill and got ready to leave there was no one in site. No good byes? How was everything? Hope to see you again? Nothing...which was much different than our first visit. I thought about going in the kitchen which seems like where everyone was or taking a purple shirt from the shelf (just kidding ) no one would known because no one was around. And a smaller space to host with a bar and TV's. Parking on the street or there's a garage across the street. Walking distance to the circle. Okay so I was super excited to not only try a mew restaurant but a new black owned restaurant. I have a few friends that have gone for lunch and had been interested. First sense that was activated was hearing. Music was playing for the outside seating. Instant star for me as I always enjoy a vibe. It took a while to be greeted however someone came and we sat outside. It was a beautiful day/night for outside seating. I indulged in the devour menu while my friend ordered their onion rings, which were so crispy and the sauce had a kick. She also ordered a house salad. While the salad was good it was your traditional salad no added meat for $10 I got the flatbread which sounded fire. While it smelled amazing it was kind of crispy and lacked some flavor. My salmon came out and was beautifully presented and seasoned. The salmon was cooked to perfection I then had bread pudding which was delicious however it was a personally bummer that it wasn't served with ice cream. One of the newer restaurants downtown so I decided to give it a try. We had a meeting at this location so it was ideal to give it a try. I decided to try the lamb because that is a favorite dish for me. Although I had not eaten here before I wanted to give it a try. Meals started coming out and I noticed nothing for me. One of the servers asked what I ordered which I thought was a nice gesture. Another 10 minutes go by then another server asked what I ordered I stated I thought it was taken care of. Two minutes later the co-owner comes out and asked what I ordered I told him he then states they only had half of lamb left and that he could give me a 50 percent discount. I thought my meal was nearly done and he is just telling me this. I was determined to get the lamb but almost 20 minutes had past. By this time everyone had received there meals. Deep inside I was expecting the owner to come back and say because of the time and mix up we are going to give the meal free or at least a drink even though I don't drink. Another person actually mentioned it out loud and he looked at her like he saw a ghost. He finally said with hesitation that he would give me a ice tea. The meal finally came out 37 minutes later. The lamb was small and really did not fill me at all but it was okay. At the same time they were clearing tables and turning lights off. I know this was a unique situation but from a customer service perspective it was handled all wrong. I did not say anything because I believe in paying my bill in total. But I will have to take a hard at returning in the future. For the record the lamb was okay nothing out of the norm. read more

I visited The Block for an early dinner on a Saturday with a friend before visiting an art exhibit at the library downtown. We arrived at around 445 and were greeted immediately and told to make ourselves comfortable at the table of our choice. We chose a table by the window and were brought water and menus promptly, and our order was taken shortly after. I ordered a Sunking Cream Ale to drink however our server returned shortly after to let me know they were out. I chose a Stella instead and our drinks arrived soon after, however our food took longer than average to come out. The restaurant had a handful of other tables however it was not busy. The wait for the food wasn't too bad as we were talking and it was early so we weren't overly hungry. I ordered a "Big Jon" sandwich with chicken which comes with fries, and my friend ordered the shrimp skewers with rice and veggies. Our food was delicious and worth the wait! The fries were steakhouse style but thin, I've never had anything like them - I loved the crunch! Once our plates were cleared we waited a long time for our check, and ended up having to ask for it. It also took a long time after receiving the check for payment to be taken. It was almost 7pm by the time we left the restaurant. In spite of the wait times, all the staff were friendly, there was a great atmosphere with music playing and local art on display for sale, and the food was amazing. Got locked out of room for 30 minutes on our first day there. Watched a minor-league game. It was cool. Next day went to a museum. Probably one of the coolest museums I've ever visited. Then we returned back to the apartment to find that the battery on the lock had died and we were locked out for another 45 minutes. Food was good though. read more

Still beyond annoyed by my experience as a tenant of The Block over a year ago. You know that pit-of-the-stomach feeling you get when something so egregiously unfair happens to you that it ruins your day whenever you're reminded of it? Well, that's The Block for me. I can't even drive past the location without becoming nauseous about the lack of common decency with which I was treated by this company and it's employees. I sincerely hope management has turned around for the sake of their current residents. And if not, I hope The Block has fully transitioned into their hotel side business so as to save unsuspecting youth from being conned into a year-long lease with them. P.S. Multiple of my prior reviews of The Block were somehow removed from Yelp? I thought companies couldn't pay to remove reviews with which they disagreed... read more

The wait for seating wasn't long, as it was a bit busy. It appeared they were short handed of their staff, as the couple of people taking orders, making drinks, serving customers appear to be confusing. My order for cocktail drinks were incorrect, the food tasted like it was rushed, not really exciting! My first experience here may have been just a bad Covid-19 night. I lived at The Block for a year, and then very happily turned in my keys. It gets five stars for location, but the general experience isn't worth the rent. The Block is an old department store that has been converted to apartments. The building has seen better days. The public areas look pretty nice, but the stairwells and back areas are filthy and are not well maintained. The elevators are slow and on several occasions were both out of service at the same time (Have fun with your 8th floor walk-up). The garage door frequently had to be forced open in the morning, and then would be stuck open in the afternoon so anybody could wander on in. Not great. The nail in the coffin here is their short term rental side hustle. There's about 30 Airbnb-type rentals interspersed around the standard rental units, and they share an open atrium. So anybody with 200 bucks can rent the apartment next to you to throw their downtown party. In my time this happened *frequently*, and other residents shared similar gripes about the disorderly strangers who constantly filled the building. My advice to management is to fix up the building and decide whether you want to run an apartment building or a hotel. You've got a beautiful property but you need to respect your long term tenants. read more

I have to start with the obvious -- The Block is located in a wonderful location. My apartment is really beautiful, I can walk anywhere downtown, and it's certainly got a unique charm. It's not like the other standard "one-size-fits-all" apartments that pepper downtown Indy. That's what earns The Block two stars. There are clearly management issues. In the eight months I've lived here, there have been three different property managers. That's fine -- I totally get that people change jobs, things don't work out, etc. However, it's the duty of the apartment management to update residents on how to contact the property staff. The leasing office's official hours are from 9-5, no complaints there. However, the leasing office's real hours are more like 9-noon some days, 9-4 some days, 11-3 some days... there is no consistency, and no warning other than the door being closed and the lights off. That makes it really difficult to resolve issues that aren't being addressed via maintenance requests. I had an issue with my air conditioning and it took two weeks for anyone to do anything about it. 90 degrees outside + no airflow in my bedroom did not make for a great experience. The air in the rest of my apartment worked, but not in the bedroom. It also took two months for someone to come and fix my window that was painted shut. Security is also not great -- a few months ago a homeless man got into the building and was jiggling doorknobs to try and get into the building. I know it happened to at least a few other residents spread across several floors. The security guards are a joke -- they just sit on their phones and don't pay attention. I'll also warn anyone who may be planning to move to The Block that part of living in an old building with giant windows (which is what sold me on the apartment in the first place) is dealing with a very cold apartment or very high electric bill in the winter. Like... $250/mo for a one bedroom apartment with the thermostat set at 62. Be prepared. Over all, I love my apartment -- I just hope and pray that I never need help from building staff with anything. read more

Honestly, if I could give the new management a zero I would. A half star would be more accurate because I am not quite upset enough to pay my break lease fee. Getting there though. First of all, I would like to state that this should not reflect on the leasing staff as I know none of the following was their decision. Everyone I have actually talked to has been kind, and I know they are not a part of any of these decisions they're being directed by the ownership and management company. Since the new management took over, there has been no security as others have mentioned at any entry point. The garage doors stay open and do not require key access to enter the building except by the front door or skywalk. You can walk off of the street and directly into the building without needing any kind of key access. We have had multiple instances of unhoused people shaking our front door handle attempting to get in. As others have mentioned, they suggest getting renter's insurance to combat this. How about fixing the garage doors that the building already has in place?? I am so glad we do not have a car parked with them as it is at least $120+ per month last I heard for a space that literally anyone can walk in off the street and get to. We told the office a few months back that we had water leaking from the apartment above us, so they cut a hole in our ceiling and asked us to see if it stopped leaking. We found out later they had sealed the tub above us and never came back to fix the hole in our ceiling OR tell us it has been fixed. One of the maintenance staff mentioned this to my husband in passing, but the hole is still in the ceiling. It's a fairly large hole as well, about 18"x18" above our tub and toilet. They are now doing FULL RENOVATIONS on cabinetry and light fixtures while we are in the apartment as well, instead of waiting for vacant units. We were given the required notice, of course, pursuant to Indiana State law, but how would you like less than 3 days notice that they're going to be doing a full reno and moving all of your crap while you're at work? We got the letter on Friday afternoon that they would be entering on Monday morning. This morning I looked on my security camera to find multiple people in my kitchen, removing things from drawers, setting some of my clean dishware on the floor, etc. So, on top of the hindrance of people in the apartment, I now I have to rewash everything that was clean. They have painted all of the exterior doors a flat blackish gray which looks terrible and makes the hallways look incredibly dark and dim. On top of that, they seemed to only do one coat of paint and it is chipping off of every door they painted so you have shiny oak behind the chipping paint. As others have mentioned, the new company has passed the building insurance fee onto the residents. Which I do understand is legal, however its a shitty thing to do in the middle of people's leases. I have been looking at the pricing for open units and it looks like even if we wanted to stay another lease term, we wouldn't be able to for the amount they're looking to rent the units for now. Given that the security of the building is incredibly compromised and they keep adding fees to our bill I don't believe we will be staying. The biggest draw about this place for us was the location and they did not have breed restrictions for dogs. But the location and connectivity for the Skywalk is great- IF they would clean the stairwell that connects to it! It has smelled like urine since we moved in. There are urine stains on the stairs. Smell is bad enough that I have to hold my breath and I am normally not queasy. I am unsure if the new company has breed restrictions or not- but I am sure I'll find out on my renewal letter. Before the new management took over, I was tripping over myself to recommend The Block to my friends. Now I keep telling people to stay far, far away. This is the place for you if you want half-assed renos done on your home while you are living in it and if you like surprise fees added to your bill. read more

My lease is almost up at my apartment, so I thought it would be a good time to start looking around to see if I wanted to move before I just signed a new one for another year where I am now. I know someone who lives here, so I decided to give them a call and get some information and schedule an appointment to look around. I stopped in for my 11:30 am appointment on a Saturday morning and walked around the lobby area while someone signed their lease and got their keys. Afterwards, I was walked around to a few different apartments and got the tour of the building. In terms of the building, I think they did a decent job of preserving the charm of the building. The exercise room is the old mens lounge, and some of the original escalators still exist in the middle of the upper level apartments. I felt they could have done a little more though, and was a little turned off when the guy walking me around said they had intended to do more, but then the historical society stepped in and stopped them from moving forward. He said they planned to do something with the auditorium but couldn't, so it's appliance storage for them now. Apartments range in shapes and sizes, which is kind of cool. A little pricey, but that's what you get for living smack dab in the middle of downtown. Not quite for me, but definately something I woudl recommend to someone looking for an urban apartment steps from the circle. read more

And to make sure dwellers can have bedrooms and light--high up windows built into the tall walls. Clever. The fitness room is amazing--lots of original elements. First, I must say that the location of the Block is excellent and the vibe of the old-department-store-turned-apartments is really cool. After looking at six different apartment buildings and not being overly impressed with any, I nearly instantly fell in love with the Block when I first visited it. Unfortunately, it did not take long for this love to wear off. In February, we started to experience a few leaks in our apartment. Initially, the leaks were annoying, but manageable. While I did not keep official count, I suspect we had maintenance in our apartment a minimum of 15 times. At various times, we were told the leak was fixed, only to discover more leaking when it next rained. This, however, is not even the start of the real problems. The leaks got progressively worse over time, to the point that we were beginning to run out of buckets. Then, in early June, we experienced a fairly serious (but not hurricane-level by any means) rainstorm. Our apartment became entirely unlivable. It is not an exaggeration to say that we had a small waterfall in our spare bedroom. The leaking was so bad that it soaked all the way through our upstairs down to the first floor, causing the hardwood to warp. When we alerted the Block maintenance to the serious problem we were having, we were initially told that "I can't do anything about the rain." To the Block's credit, we were ultimately allowed to move apartments from the 8th to the 7th floor. To achieve this, I had to take two days off work, but I will say that, on paper, the Block was accommodating. The primary problem is that, throughout this whole process, my fiance and I have been treated incredibly rudely by the Block management. Instead of being treated with respect and being consoled for the fairly stressful situation the Block had put us in, we were treated with contempt by both the Block management and maintenance team. It felt as if the management team considered us to be inconveniencing them with our waterfall-coming-from-our-ceiling problems, and that we would be treated accordingly. In summary, if you do indeed decide to rent at the Block, I highly recommend avoiding the top floors -- a considerable number of our neighbors were experiencing similar problems. If you are fortunate enough not to need any maintenance and can avoid interactions with management, then the Block can be a decent place to live -- the location is great and the old building really is cool. But, I would not personally recommend taking that risk. read more

I've lived in the Block for 10 years so I've seen my fair share of leasing agents. The location is convenient and is the main selling point for the property. The building is old, which of course will lead to issues. I've not experienced anything from the staff that is less than responsive when those issues arise. Maintenance is readily available via cell. They're so accommodating that they have, at my request and approval, let my visitors in my place when I'm not in the building. I appreciate that they offer early lease signing concessions. I am confident that I will remain a resident in the building as long as I'm a resident in the city. read more

We moved in March 2019 and have found the location to be fabulous! The apartments are oddly shaped and the view we have isn't great. But this is the heart of Indianapolis and it's jumping! The office staff has changed a couple of times since we've been here. But the maintenance guy has been the same and he is great! Very responsive, though we've only had to call about minor stuff. Overall I would recommend living here, especially if you work downtown! read more

Came in during Burger Week and I assumed it'd be a little busier than normal, but I haven't had an experience quite like this one. Food was average at best, burger was made with the wrong toppings, and the food took 35 mins to get to us. Worst part was waiting for the check and then waiting for our debit cards to come back. This process took 30 mins when it should have been 5-10 TOPS. Most likely won't be returning, but may cut them slack considering it was Burger Week. read more

It's been 5 months since my last update. The place did get fresh paint on some floors, and some decorative updates downstairs. I know it takes a while to fix years of neglect, but there is still something missing. While I believe there may be a cleaning crew (you'd think I would see them), I'm not very sure. The building is cleaner than it was, but not as clean as it should be. I must say, management is very quick respond to issues. There has been quite a bit of turnaround (the new manager either quit or was fired a few weeks ago) but the new person in charge seems to care. The maintenance guys are awesome and have resolved all of my issues at breakneck speed. Security is lacking, as evidenced by the guy who broke into the building a couple of weeks ago and got into the leasing office (where people's packages and apartment keys are). We are now dealing with an ant and house centipede infestation IN our apartment (that I keep clean like a model home). Google house centipedes...those babies are huge and disgusting. The garbage area on my floor hasn't been cleaned in god knows how long. You walk in there and see the ants going to town on food and trash that ends up on the floor because people don't know how to throw bags down a chute. I can't express how disgusting this is. Not sure we'll be renewing the lease at this point. read more

I moved to The Block after spending 6 months at a "state of the art", "luxury" apartment community. I'm thrilled that we moved to The Block because it fits our needs perfectly. Our view of downtown is incredible and the location is prime. The Block is safe, convenient, and stylish. I love that our building was an iconic department store and I really enjoy living near tons of great shopping and restaurants. read more

As yelp says, "As good as it gets!" I've rented all over the midwest as my career has taken me many places, and I can say without reservation that The Block is a fantastic place to live. We've been here over a year, and in that time, we haven't had a problem with our unit. The building manager, front desk manager, and maintenance staff are all incredibly friendly, helpful, and professional. When our out of town guests come to visit, the first thing they notice is the unique architecture. The old Block department store was converted into apartment units and every unit is different. The ceilings are tall, natural light is phenomenal, and exposed duct work adds an awesome loft feel. If you're looking for a place to live right in the center of downtown, this should be your new home. read more

I lived here for a year. The neighbors were loud and the landlord sent them letters, but they guard would not help much. The ceiling in the upstairs lobby caved in during a storm and it took them three weeks before they even began doing anything. The main supervisor is really rude too and constantly acts like one is a bother when even just simply saying hello. read more
