What a beautiful historic cemetery that offers now longer hours and is now open daily. I decided to come here on a wet, autumn day with my friend who enjoys history just as much as I do. It was a bit gloomy out, but that didn't take away from the experience of exploring the realms of Oak Hill Cemetery. We showed up around 2 p.m. where we retrieved a map of the cemetery to view some of the more notable burials. This is a very hilly cemetery right north of Georgetown in the middle of DC. You would not think you were in the middle of the city considering how quiet it was. There are so many passed congressmen and senators here. So many ones that helped build up DC and lay the basic foundation of our government. That can be debated if that is a good or a bad thing, but still it would never hurt to come and pay tribute to those who lay to rest here. I really enjoyed seeing the Van Ness mausoleum and reading about it. The elaborate mausoleum speaks volumes just by site of it. The history behind the Van Ness family really played a critical role in DC and worth looking up when you have the opportunity.

All that live must die, passing through nature to eternity. -William Shakespeare For those who've passed and for those just passing through, this garden-style cemetery is a peaceful resting place for all who visit and in whatever capacity that they arrive. Had I not been driving along Rock Creek Parkway the day before my visit, I would have continued to be oblivious to the existence of Oak Hill Cemetery. From the Parkway, you can see Gothic-style mausoleums tucked into the Georgetown hillside. My curiosity was piqued and with a little research I was able to return the following day. Crumbling tomb stones from the 1800s, decorative crypts, monuments and statues are surrounded by a tranquil(!) Rock Creek forrestry in a cemetery that somehow is segregated from the crazy commotion of the city that surrounds it. The cemetery was founded by W.W. Corcoran and contains several monuments and interments that date back to the Civil War. Inside you'll find a chapel that was designed by architect, James Renwick, Jr. (St. Paul's Cathedral, Smithsonian Building) which adds to the rich history of this 15-acre property. Verdict: A quiet retreat for those looking to pay their respects to the deceased or for those interested in a botanical jaunt with historical highlights. Come to the chapel to pray and head over to Georgetown to play. This would be a great outing for those clear sky and low humidity days followed by a little Sauvignon Blanc down the hill.

Beautiful, majestic stonework. Winding, quiet paths. Earthy, wet, natural smells. Flora and fauna - thriving. Headstones - centuries old and days new. Cool, tree-filtered, sunlight. Also, there is a metric crap-ton of chipmunks. Weeeeeeee! This is a great spot for a lazy Sunday stroll. Please be respectful - your noise, your activities, and your impact on the cemetery & its guests.

Examine the prepaid contract if they insist on getting the additional $1,000.00 well pay them for what they have done and have your love one picked up from Hortons by the new funeral home and taken to the other funeral home that will respect you get a refund from Hortons and this part is "important" get the new funeral home to order your casket. Remember "You" are in charge of your deceased family member not the funeral home. It's totally unnecessary to rip off family members handling the arrangements for an additional 1,000.00 pocket money for the funeral home to handle your loved ones after prearrangements has already been made and "paid for". Also if the removal person shows up to your residence to remove your loved one dressed inappropriately with a hoodie on and casual baggy pants like he's going to a ball game "as a representative of the funeral home" send him away call the funeral Home or another funeral home and "demand" someone that will respect your home and your family that will show up dressed appropriately with at least dress slacks and a decent shirt casual or dress shoes and don't accept them requesting your help to remove your loved one from your residence they should come prepared with two people remember you're paying for this proper service and you tell the funeral home what time to come to your residence to pick up your loved one if you're waiting for other family members to come to your home before your love one is removed from your residence generally they come automatically within 90 minutes but if you need more time let them know when you call to notify them of the passing of your loved one. .

The only thing that was a issue for me was that when first sitting down to meet with someone a piece of paper was just sat in front of my face with no real directions or questions being asked to what I would like to see. If you are helping someone with planning while they are grieving or suffered a loss it is very confusing to just sit down and look at a paper with no real guidance or direction. The other issue I had was we paid for a service and it wasn't provided in the time that we previously discussed. Other than that the workers are very respectful upbeat and polite. A little on the pricey side but still decent.

I was told transportation would be sent to pick up my husband's body from the hospital. I later learned this did not happen because I was given conflicting information about when release paperwork needed to be signed. Twenty-four hours passed, and his body was still not picked up. During this stressful time, the customer service I received made the situation harder. I was spoken to in a dismissive tone and was told "it doesn't work like that," instead of receiving clear guidance or support. The consultant did not offer condolences, empathy, or patience. I felt blamed for their miscommunication and left feeling even more overwhelmed. Losing a loved one is painful. Families deserve compassion, accurate information, and respectful service. Because of the lack of care, confusion, and poor treatment, I made the decision to go elsewhere. I hope no other grieving family experiences what I did.

They didn't get her body when they said they would. They made us re-identify her weeks later when she had already been identified. They took one month to cremate her... Talk about traumatizing.
