I read the reviews for Rock Creek Cemetery and looked at the pictures. I decided I had to go here for myself and I was not disappointed. Walking the grounds of this cemetery was as if I were walking through an outside art museum. The hills flow up and down throughout the cemetery. The cemetery was very tranquil. As I walked through the cemetery the only thing missing was a babbling brook in the background for sound. There were several workers there maintaining the grounds and the mausoleums. I highly recommend going to Rock Creek Cemetery to see the beautiful statues and mausoleums in person. The grounds are open daily from 8a - 7p (including holidays). The office is open Monday - Friday from 9a - 5p (closed on holidays). You are allowed to drive through the cemetery. If you decide to walk there is onsite parking. The closest metro stations are Brookland, Fort Totten and Georgia Avenue/Petworth. If you are unable to make it to the cemetery, I uploaded several pictures. I wrote a blog about this particular cemetery that will give you a little more insight from my vantage point. You can visit the blog here: http://somewhereindc.com/st-pauls-rock-creek-cemetery

Until this evening I had always wanted to be cremated and had my ashes scattered across the Badlands of South Dakota. Then I spent an hour exploring Rock Creek Cemetery. I have changed my burial plans, and would update my final directive if such a thing existed. This place is creepy, gothic, hallowed, elegant, or any other adjective denoting cool cemetery that you might find in Roget's Thesaurus. It is a little tricky to get to from 14th Street, as Webster (the street the main gate is on) becomes a one way heading west midway between 14th and North Capitol. Just wind around the somber hard luck fringes of Petworth until you find your way back. Once you pass through the gates into these Elysian Fields, which oddly are not within a mile of Rock Creek, you are transported far south. The eerie sculptures and plentiful mausoleums (and yes that is the correct plural form, I checked) recall the Confederate burying ground of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. How I made it to damn near middle age living here and never found my way past the wrought iron into this church yard of solitude can only be ascribed to me generally being averse to dealing with death. On a Sunday eve I could hear the domestic turmoil from the surrounding neighborhood as I traipsed among 150 year old tombs that grace this green hillside near the US Soldiers' Home. I even found an odd Eastern European, or is it Russian, section with icons and distinctively shaped wooden carved crosses. I was looking for the graves of Upton Sinclair and Edgar Allan Poe's sister, and failed to find either, as I got sucked into the labyrinth of crumbling walkways and winding roads. I didn't care that the object of my visit was a fail, as the atmospherics of the cemetery itself were enough to make a grey cloudy day even gloomier. For whatever reason, cars can travel at will disturbing the peace with knocking motors and "Call Me Maybe" on the speakers, but bikes are verboten. That said, I don't know who would stop you from riding here, although the roads are poorly maintained and with skinny tires you might end up a permanent resident if you hit the wrong bump.

Examine the prepaid contract if they insist on getting the additional $1,000.00 well pay them for what they have done and have your love one picked up from Hortons by the new funeral home and taken to the other funeral home that will respect you get a refund from Hortons and this part is "important" get the new funeral home to order your casket. Remember "You" are in charge of your deceased family member not the funeral home. It's totally unnecessary to rip off family members handling the arrangements for an additional 1,000.00 pocket money for the funeral home to handle your loved ones after prearrangements has already been made and "paid for". Also if the removal person shows up to your residence to remove your loved one dressed inappropriately with a hoodie on and casual baggy pants like he's going to a ball game "as a representative of the funeral home" send him away call the funeral Home or another funeral home and "demand" someone that will respect your home and your family that will show up dressed appropriately with at least dress slacks and a decent shirt casual or dress shoes and don't accept them requesting your help to remove your loved one from your residence they should come prepared with two people remember you're paying for this proper service and you tell the funeral home what time to come to your residence to pick up your loved one if you're waiting for other family members to come to your home before your love one is removed from your residence generally they come automatically within 90 minutes but if you need more time let them know when you call to notify them of the passing of your loved one. .

The only thing that was a issue for me was that when first sitting down to meet with someone a piece of paper was just sat in front of my face with no real directions or questions being asked to what I would like to see. If you are helping someone with planning while they are grieving or suffered a loss it is very confusing to just sit down and look at a paper with no real guidance or direction. The other issue I had was we paid for a service and it wasn't provided in the time that we previously discussed. Other than that the workers are very respectful upbeat and polite. A little on the pricey side but still decent.

About as sensitive as an impacted wisdom tooth…read more We used this place recently when my mother-in-law passed away and while clearly, we won't be in a position to use them again, I would warn off someone also looking to handle the passing of a loved one unless your a devotee of Marx, Groucho not Karl. We were supposed to form up in a set aside space outside a cemetery to drive in. I was the first to arrive and parked a little behind the designated sign and waited. A little while later the hearse pulled up and parked in front of me. I walked up to make sure it was for my mother-in-law and was told "you're gonna have to move back" apparently although we were in a lane set aside for this and clearly with enough space, she'd parked there, she wanted to be next to the sign, not a car length in front of it. Beyond the no obvious need for this, it was said in harsh tones without any expression of sympathy to what was clearly a part of the grieving family and delivered with all the solicitude of a waitress in a greasy spoon asking "what do ya want?" It went downhill from there. Almost literally. As the service provided a driver for the hearse and that was it. They did not supply pall barers so the grieving family was suddenly called up to manhandle the casket from the hearse to the grave side with no warning or training beyond -"grab hold and pull." As people stumbled, literally under the load and one person tripped over the edge of the open grave I had visions of someone precipitating my mother-in-law into the ground. Mouring families are in no shape to think out things like this, they, thankfully, do not have experience in this. It literally is this place's business to think of things like that "Will you need pall barers?" And failing to do so shows exactly how badly run it is.

We had a memorial service elsewhere, so this was to be the only service provided. They offered a 3rd party for the programs and to place the obituary ad in the Washington Post. When we got the funeral program I immediately noticed McQuire had added their logo to the program w/out asking. It just showed up in the 1st round shared w/ us by the printer. I thought that was tacky but was able to have that removed. I should have taken this as a sign. We sent them the final copy of the obituary and the almost $700 for the fee to the Washington Post. However, this time we were not able to see/approve the obit before it was printed. I can't put into words the disgust I felt when I saw the funeral home had added "Funeral services at McQuire" to the final obituary. Besides the fact that we weren't asked if this was ok, it wasn't true. It would have been misleading for anyone looking for information about the memorial. This is greedy and shameful. They offered my father $16 as compensation for the pain their greed caused during the darkest time of our lives and for something that can't be fixed. To further confirm the integrity of this place, I'd like to add that we considered using them for limo services but their fee of $675 for a 9 seat car was over $200 more then the other estimates received. The last thing you want to be worried about when you lose a love one is being taken advantage of the funeral home. Try whichever other one that pops up in this screen instead. Your chances of not adding pain on top of pain will be better.
