Doc Aarons is honest, transparent, and not afraid to tell you the facts. He is a down-home vet that won't drag you along. There are times you won't want to hear what he has to say, but that is because he will not drag you down an unrealistic rabbit hole that drains your piggy bank. He is humble and has no problem referring you somewhere else if what your pet needs is beyond his expertise. We use him for most minor surgeries, spay, neuter, exams, vaccinations, etc. For our OFA X-Rays, we use Dr Minor in Templeton as he has the most up to date machines. For weekend or after hours emergency service, we go to Atascadero Pet Hospital. Otherwise, during normal business hours, Dr Aarons can handle most situations. read more

Our Pug Missy had a bad ear infection. When I called two different offices to schedule an appointment, both stated they were booked for three weeks. I could do a drop off which meant leaving her for hours at double the regular office visit fee of $60! While I've used both clinics and they were good ones, it was unacceptable to wait that long not to mention the cost$ Finally, I searched for the Veterinarian who spayed a barn cat I adopted through a rescue organization last year, Dr. Aarons at Oak Country Veterinary Services in Paso Robles. I was relieved to get an appointment the next afternoon. Missy and I were welcomed by Receptionist, Becca and Dr. Aaron's rescue dog, Ollie. Missy's ear infection was treated right away and she had a spa type "Peticure," surprisingly at no extra charge. I've been charged $35 for a nail trim at another office. BIGGEST SURPRISE - The Bill! Missy and I are new Fans of Dr. Aarons. His rates for dental care for my 10 year old MinPin is going to be very reasonable compared to the quote from the two other Veterinarian offices. Hang onto your cash and make an appointment. By the way.......Dr. Aarons is also an author and I'm enjoying his Podcasts immensely. read more

Oak Country Veterinary Services - Our Pug, Missy Piggy after her first visit with Dr. Aaron. - Veterinarians Near Me - Paso Robles, California

On a day trip to the beach on Memorial Day weekend, my dog sniffed a foxtail into her nose. She reverse sneezed for a bit while I frantically tried to remove it, to no avail. I called the closest emergency vet to hear there was a three hour wait and the next emergency vet had the same backlog. Then upon calling Dr. Aarons we were told she could be treated from his home office. After a 30 min. drive my angel dog was resting calmly, with no signs of discomfort. The procedure to remove a foxtail is invasive and requires anesthesia. Much to my relief, Dr. Aarons said action was not necessary as the dog was not displaying signs of distress and the foxtail would pass on its own. I was a little hesitant based on the information online, but a second opinion concurred. Ill be taking her in to our vet once they open after the holiday to check in. I am so happy and thankful that The Dr. assessed the situation before jumping to rash conclusions. Of course I want what's best for my dog; she is the best dog ever. At age 13 I have to evaluate risks associated and I am so grateful that this vet took that into consideration. read more

Oak Country Veterinary Services - Sadie, 13 yr lab - Veterinarians Near Me - Paso Robles, California

James E. Aarons is the DVM. We have used this office to remove some tumors on Buddy two years ago, Spay our cat and now sadly help us as we had to make the sad decision to put our eleven year old loyal friend Buddy out of his misery. It all happened quite fast. One day our dog was surfing counters and the next day he was leaving half his food. . By the time we figured out that Buddy was sick he tested positive for Diabetes and then before we had time to decide what would come next, the blood test results came back from their in -house lab showing that all his major organs were shutting down. In our life, we had been fortunate enough to never had to have made the adult decision about an animal in that way. It was heart breaking and since it was my daughter's dog and she was over 3 hours away, we had to bring her into the decision and it was not a quick decision. We definitely did not go to the vet's thinking that we would be leaving without him. But Dr. Aarons was very patient as well as his assistant. If we had decided to try to keep him going for as long as possible, he was willing to teach us how to use insulin but he was clear about making sure that we knew that it was just a matter of time. He also was very compassionate about the alternative decision and supportive of whatever we decided. We did not feel rushed and we were in agony wondering if we should wait for my daughter. In the end we decided to get it over with. Buddy had started throwing up and he was only going to get sicker & I did not want my daughter driving in such a distraught and panicked state. And so though we lost our dog, I have to say that we were made to feel very comfortable and not judged. Buddy was given medicine that put him to sleep before he was actually put to sleep. We stayed until he was asleep. I whispered Brookie loves you as he licked my tears because I promised my daughter I would say her name to him. I feel if Buddy had been younger and had any hope that they would have encouraged us and given us hope. Their office is like a little country office and definitely off of the beaten path. It is not pristeen and fancy but maybe that is why it does not gouge you or find extra things to charge you for. You get what you pay for. It cost us $360.00 & would have just cost $70 without the tests, if we had gone in knowing that we just needed to put him to sleep. So they are not 'cheap' but they are fair and do not gouge. It was a sucky experience all the way around but the Dr. and assistant were great and treated Buddy with love and respect and that's what counts! read more

BEWARE- Dr James Aarons is a FRAUD! We had to put our 14 year old dog to rest, we paid for the individual cremation, received a nice box with ashes...come to find out from the cremation company- that they don't do business with Dr James Aarons anymore. When we asked Dr Aarons what happened with our beloved family dog's remains, he ADMITTED to disposing of our dog in the landfill and giving us someone's ashes that were never claimed! The hurt and pain that he caused by showing our four-legged family member such disrespect in death is heart breaking! Do not do business with this vet! read more

Dr. Aarons is very kind and professional! I was able to get a last-minute appointment for my pet and I did not have to wait outside curbside. I was able to attend the examination. It is so important to me to be able to be present when my pet is examined. Thanks to Dr. Aarons expertise, Sufi is on the mend! Thank you Dr. Aaron's! read more

My family has been using doctor Aarons for the last 16 years. I live in Orange County and took my 1 year old cat to a vet down there when he kept vomiting. They took an X-ray and were convinced that my cat needed emergency surgery. I called Dr Aarons and he offered to see him first thing the next morning and would do the surgery for less than half the cost of my local vet. Doctor Aarons reviewed the X-ray and did an examination and wasn't convinced that surgery wasn't needed. He made sure I was comfortable with a "wait and see" treatment. It's been 4 days and my cat is back to being himself. Dr Aarons common since and years of experience saved my cat from unnecessary surgery and me thousands of dollars. He is a great vet and truly cares. read more

Recently, a feral cat came to live in my backyard. I didn't think much about it at the time as the cat has been very friendly and came and went as it pleases. One day the cat gave birth to two kittens that died not long after. Alarmed, I called Dr. Aarons and he was able to schedule an appointment for the cat that worked around my busy schedule. When I went to his office, I was greeted by him and his assistant, and we went into the back to take a look at the cat. During the check up, It was quite clear Dr. Aarons took his job seriously. He made sure of the safety of everyone there in case the feral cat decided it didn't want to play along anymore. Sure enough halfway through the check up the cat became rather upset and it tried to attack Dr. Aarons; He was able to keep a hold of the cat without hurting it, and the check up proceeded. Through the entire process Dr. Aarons did not sugar coat anything and consulted with me before moving forward with any testings or treatment. When it came to recommending certain treatments, he made sure I understood and saw why he was recommending it. This is something I greatly appreciate as I am concerned with any doctor doing things that may be unnecessary. I had no complaints and no negative experience here. I will be doing a follow up appointment with Dr. Aarons in about two weeks to see how the cat is progressing and continue treatment. I will post a follow up. read more

I recently adopted a 7 year old cat. A few months after having her, I noticed something wrong with both of her front paws. I took her to my normal vet, he diagnosed her with a botched declaw job. The poor cat had been declawed as a kitten and the vet left behind some of those cells that regrew new claws and were now breaking the skin to grow out. I called the previous owner who told me Dr. Aarons preformed the first declaw job. I then contacted his office and made arrangements to bring her back there. The day of surgery, when I came to pick my cat up from her second declaw job, the office gave me absolutely no at home care or talk about what to expect and do. The doctor was already gone and therefore not available for questions. I was instructed to come back the next morning for the cats pain killer prescription and could talk to the doctor about my questions at that time. *Questions I felt should have been answered at or before pick up were: - how long will she be drugged up - how long do the wrappings stay on - how long does the cone stay on - what kind of at home care should I expect in terms of medicine - does she need a follow up appointment The first few hours I had her home, she was VERY drugged up laying on the couch beside me. As still as a dead animal. At one point I went to the rest room and she had managed to kick the bandages off and I saw the open wounds. They were horrific. This was about 9pm and I called the vets office. It rang the doctors home line, which I was grateful that he picked up. He rudely assured me that everything was fine and to bring the cat back in the morning. He seemed miffed that I had called. Later that night, I noticed she had gone into her little box, which I set up next to her. There was now tiny bits of litter stuck in her wounds. :( The next morning I took the cat in at opening time. I left this appointment in tears! - Right in front of me, the doctor called my cat a little B*tch because she was too scared to come out of her carrier. - The doctor complained to the nurse that I called him the night before and made him miss 10 minutes of his show and asked her what happened in the show... again, this was RIGHT in front of me. - I had to ask him and the nurse to clean the cats paws three different times from the litter because each time they did it, it was sloppy and spots were missed. - He refused to re-wrap her paws because he said "she is just going to kick them off again". He then said "that's what she did last time too!" Well, that would have been helpful information for me to know ahead of time! ***No one even told me before that I needed to buy special litter to prevent her paws getting dirty! All in all, the doctor showed absolutely no compassion during this appointment. I was absolutely not going to bring her back into his after the way Dr. Aaron handled the cat and the situation. I had a few follow up appointments with my one doctor in which he prescribed extra antibiotics because the paws were not healing well. He also said the incision on one of the paws was excessive. Also, her paws did finally heal but due to the larger than necessary incision, they do not look normal. I would NOT recommend this vet. read more

I just moved out to California and needed a good vet location for my dogs. This place was recommended by a local volunteer. So I scheduled both of my 2 year old Great Danes to be neutered and get a gastropexy. Only one dog had the procedure on appointment day. The following day I called the vet office because my dog had been bleeding at the stitches site. The vet said to take him to the ER. After I spent over $1,300 for the procedure I ended up spending over another $2,000 at the ER. He was bleeding internally, his blood count was so low that they wanted to do plasma transfusions. He had lost so much blood over a 4 hour period that his gums were white, he couldn't stand because was so weak, and he nearly died. I understand, as I'm a nurse, that complications happen sometimes... that's not what I'm upset about. I'm upset that not ONCE did the vet office call to check on me or my dog until it was time for the second dog to go in for his procedures and we didn't show up or call. My vet office back home would call the next day after any treatments or anything just to make sure things were going well. After I returned their call about my other dog not showing up... they said they never called because they assumed things were fine because they never got a report from the ER. My dogs are like my kids... the absolute lack of concern for my boy after he had two procedures done is mind blowing. My dog is now looking at another surgery because he's still having complications and even when I mentioned that to them on the phone today, they never followed up with that information, never asked what else was going on... I will never go back to this place and recommend others to check out other options if possible. Find a vet that recognizes dogs are more than just pets, they're family. read more

Informal, casual ...so not your typical vet office. More like a house call visit. Possibly it's why his prices don't leave one feeling they've been gouged. I got two estimates for what my dog needed: one was going to be in the vicinity of $2500 - $3000 and I walked out the door from Dr. Aaron's treatment and services (after four visits total) for my dog for $1000. My dog had a large tumor on his thigh that turned out to be nothing but fat. Dr. Aarons determined this very simply, skipping the $600 lab test that the other vet wanted to do. Dr. Aaron went in there and just took all that fat out ....boom Bam done. I guess he is kind a like, "just the facts ma'am." I would agree with other reviewers he does not price gouge.....just be ready for a very frank and candid man. P. S. House call!!! His very kind assistant/daughter helped me by picking up my dog one morning from my house and taking him on over to the vet office for one of his follow-ups because I couldn't get him there. read more

I visited Oak Country Veterinary with my fiancee to get a dental and ear cleaning for my pitbull/boxer and a spay for my Persian kitty. Dr. Aarons was very sweet with our animals like they were his own. He was extremely informative and friendly to us. His daughter, Abby (the receptionist) was super nice and let us know that if we had any questions or concerns about our pets in the future, that we should give them a call as soon as possible. To me, that sounds like a place that really cares read more

My husbands dog was taken here to be put down and extra money was paid for him to be cremated. Instead of cremating him, Dr Aarons drove him to a dump, pocketed the money and gave fake ashes to my mother in law. When confronted he cursed at her, telling her "well, he's not in the freezer anymore" This worthless fuck needs his license pulled. DO NOT USE DR AARONS! read more

This is a review of Dr. Aarons only as he was good enough to see to our dog at his home after hours so I haven't had the pleasure of meeting his staff. When a deer startled and kicked my Border Collie in the chest leaving a nasty gaping wound I knew it needed sutures, my neighbor gave me the referral to Dr. Aarons who treats her dogs and equine as we had recently moved to the north county. Dr. Aarons was amazing! Not only did he do an amazing job on the sutures but he made time for a new patient after hours. He is a pragmatic Dr. who will tell you in a very straight forward manner what he advises, but I appreciate that sort of communication. I feel like his fees are in line with the standards for most vets in the area and he certainly doesn't price gouge at all. read more

Dr. Aarons is amazing. I was originally referred to him by 4 different friends of mine, all of whom are avid animal lovers. Two are dog breeders and all are very particular about their animals' care. After reading the one not-so-glowing revue on Yelp I was concerned, so I double checked with my friends and as a result felt reassured. I started with Dr. Aarons in sort of a meet and greet setting, where I introduced him to my male dog and just picked his brain. He came across as very upfront (which can offend some people) and forthright. It was soon obvious that Dr. Aarons has a strong Type "A" personality and an even stronger knowledge and love of animals. In a short time I felt comfortable enough with the Dr. that I asked him to take a look at my dog. He checked him out from head to toe and said that he seemed to be in very good shape, with the exception of a small rectal polyp. He told me that it is not life threatening but is probably uncomfortable for my dog. I asked if he would remove it, he said yes, and we scheduled an appointment. I just returned home from the "procedure" and I am thrilled. Dr. Aarons could not have been more professional (while still being personable and caring) and the operation went perfectly. I would highly recommend Dr. Aarons to all pet owners that sincerely care about their pets. read more

We took our 16 year old dog Pluto to Dr. Aarons at Oak Country Vet on May 26th to be put down. We paid extra to have Pluto privately cremated and left his body there. 3 weeks later, his office called us to pick up his remains. All was fine. In July, our 6 year old lab got sick. When I called Dr. Aarons, he cursed at me 4 times saying how it was bullshit that our dog was sick. We took her to another vet who diagnosed cancer, and we had her put down and cremated. When we picked up her remains, there was a note from the cremation place assuring us that Lucy was treated with respect. I called them up to thank them and that it meant a lot. I told Tyler at Oak Hills Pet Memorial that we didn't get that certificate with Pluto. He asked the name of the vet and I told him Dr. Aarons. He said they do his cremation and asked the date. I gave him the date and he looked on his computer and checked one week before and 3 weeks after Pluto died and had nothing from Oak Country Vet. Upon further questions Dr. Aarons admitted he had his son dump Pluto's remains at the local landfill and gave us the ashes of someone 's pet who wasn't picked up. We will never go to him or recommend him to anyone for the callus way he treated our loved one , lied to us about it and charged us extra for a private cremation we didn't get. Many thanks to Tyler are Oak Hills Pet Memorial for helping us learn the truth. Tyler admitted this isn't the first time he has had complaints about Dr Aaron's and they will no longer do business with him. He gets no stars from us. read more

THEY ARE LIFE SAVERS !! I've owned my fur babies from pup to adult , all 4 of them aging from 12-18 , they are very old now to say the least. Dr aarons and his wonderful tech have helped each one of my dogs at fair price. My youngest Nikki, had never been fixed and never had a litter so her uterus started to rot from the inside out (it's called pyometra and it's very common in dogs in her circumstance ) The infection happens so rapidly that one day she was running around , playing with toys and the next day huddled in a ball in pain with a temp of 105 and increasing . Without any hesitation they diagnosed and asked permission before doing surgery right then and there. Before starting Dr aarons made sure I knew every in and out about what was going to happen . Offered to let me stay and watch as long as I was calm - but of course I was too emotional thinking I was losing her. After maybe a 20 minute wait , the friendly tech came out and assured me my baby was stable and the surgery went perfectly well . Now , almost a year later she is frolicking with her buddies and playing like a puppy again. This is only one example with one of my dogs . Every single one has been treated by this clinic and they will until it is their time to go . Thank you so much for all that you do !! read more
