Black Swan Yoga - Lovers Lane

Obsessed. I've been attending Black Swan Lovers for a little over a year and it's the only yoga I…read moredo now. I go 4 - 5x / week. I just love everything about it. It's a comfortable, informal space. It's also immersive--the familiar incense, heat, and black interior help me focus and put the outside world aside for an hour. Different instructors have their own styles and music but class structure is similar enough to practice across all of them. I love how many classes there are, all day every day, from 6 am to 9 pm or later--even holidays!! And multiple locations. I practice at Dallas Lovers but have gone to classes at the other Dallas studios and in Houston and Round Rock. All are equally comfortable and welcoming. I also appreciate the difficulty level. There's no pressure to do things you can't or don't want to, but there are lots of opportunities to advance. I'd classify myself as intermediate but I like the chance to practice headstands, arm balances, creative binds, etc. even when I'm not very good at them. You never know what you can do until you try!

I took Elyse's power flow class, last Tuesday. She is a skilled instructor-clear directions,…read moreetc... It was a great workout. With that said, this is a very large space...and had over 45 people in attendance. So, there is not any personalized instruction or help with correcting poses, etc... Granted, most students were skilled yogi's so that probably wasn't too important. The space is rather dark, dingy and smelly, (45 people working out in 90 degree + heat and it's gonna be smelly....but, seems like the space itself was full of odor, before practice even began). It is a huge place and the class only filled a third of the space. It is painted black with a couple of murals, so was reminiscent of practicing yoga in a night club....I halfway expected to see a bar and bartenders. :-) The music was loud and the instructor had to be as well, so it is missing that meditative, more peaceful yoga experience. I am in my 50's and I was the oldest person there, by 20-30 years. Not a bad thing, but just an observation. This is a great workout, if this is indeed the type of yoga practice you want to experience....more power to them. But, it's not my scene.

So, I have gotten into the habit lately of hitting up a yoga class of some sort in the evenings…read moreafter a long day at work, and before teaching my class in the early mornings. Thankfully, ClassPass has made this so much easier to switch it UP! As a part time fitness instructor with a very strong routine, I constantly find myself craving variety. This place has been on my hit list for a while and I was so happy to be able to finally go last night! And boy, am I glad I did. I tried the hot vinyasa class with Lesa and it was 60 minutes of hot and sweaty bliss. The room was packed and the VYBE was jumping! I was warmly greeted and even though I arrived a few minutes before class Lesa greeted me happily and showed me the ropes. They have towels and water/beverages for purchase. BYO yoga mat but they have those as well. The salt lamps in the studio were a beautiful touch and so were the essential oils. I parked my mat pretty close to the diffuser so I was LOVING the aromatherapy while I got my yoga on. Lesa's class was a booty kicker but she also broke it down and provided modifiers for those of us who aren't so limber but aspire to be (raises hand). Blame my tight endurance athlete hamstrings. At the end of the 60 minutes they provide you with essential oil infused cold towels. The Lakeside area is the perfect location, surrounded by luxury living as well as an abundance of retail shops. The community seems very tight knit here as well. Thankful I was able to come here and cannot wait to use my ClassPass to return for another hot class soon and very soon!!

If you like structure and consistency in your yoga classes, then you'll like Gaia. I first…read morediscovered them on ClassPass, but I stopped doing CP and going to Gaia directly. My favorite class is Still Water (yin yoga) which is focused on holding single poses for a longer duration. I also like the other two beginner classes, Gentle Waves and Dessert, although I honestly can't discern between the two. Classes typically start with a warm up of some kind (core work in the normal classes) followed by a short 5 minute group discussion. I'll admit the first time I can to Gaia this part was WEIRD. But it has grown on me, I like hearing the "good news" from other people in the class - it gives a sense of community. They also do a short spiritual on the yamas & niyamas. It's nothing weird, I often do find that the instructors give me something new to consider. That's followed by another 40mins or so of practice. During the final minutes of practice, the instructor massages your shoulders and neck with an energizing lotion. I'll admit that I find it a little gross, but I still enjoy it. I mostly feel bad for the instructors. Other things I like: early morning practices, yoga mats and blocks available, room is kept warm (not hot!), and easy parking. My only gripe is that practices don't always end on time. Combine that with having to arrive early (late yogis have to shamefully tap on the glass to get the instructor to let them in!), a one hour yoga class can quickly turn into a 2 hour affair. I've been loving my at-home practice but when I need something more I'll still be coming here and nowhere else.
