My friend and I came here at the recommendation of a local. When we showed up, there was already quite a few people, but we were able to get a table right away. It's a good thing we showed up a little earlier than the normal Portuguese lunch hour though. Within 30 minutes of arriving (around 1PM), the place was PACKED. I think it must be a hot spot for locals as it was mostly older people and everyone was speaking only in Portuguese.
My friend ordered the special, which was a shrimp and rice stew. It looked like gumbo, but tasted a bit more like shrimp étouffée. It was very good and a huge portion size.
I ordered turkey, but the order was messed up and I received pork. I decided not to send it back because whatever. The pork flavor was VERY good. But, the quality was less good. It was very sinewy, chewy, and fatty. I'm not sure if I just got the worst cuts of the hog or if the pork is always so sketchy. In any case, the flavor was good and, like my friend's dish, it was a huge portion size.
If I were back in the area, I'd come again. Our server was a perky middle-aged man that was a delight to watch. That alone almost made me overlook the questionable quality of the pork and make this 4 stars. Almost. :) read more
