I ran out of olive oil at home, so I decided to finally visit Nuvo Olive Oil, a shop my friend had recommended a long time ago. Even though it was a 45-minute drive from West Los Angeles to Lakewood, it was absolutely worth it. When I arrived, I was a bit surprised to find the tasting room closed. However, after a quick call, Nathan kindly said he'd come over right away, and in no time, he opened the tasting room for me. The space was tiny, but the variety of oils available for tasting--both flavored and authentic--was impressive. I was especially moved by the Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil, where I could really feel the peppery kick of oleocanthal. The aroma was deep and rich as well. I also tried a small amount of their 18-year-old Godmother Balsamic Vinegar, and even from just a taste, I could tell how layered and flavorful it was. I'm sure it'll elevate any salad with its depth of flavor. I ended up purchasing a 500ml bottle each of the olive oil and the Godmother balsamic. Nathan was incredibly friendly and took the time to explain everything, which made the visit all the more enjoyable. The tasting room may be small, but it has a cozy charm. You can see family photos, sample different olive oils, try olive-based skincare products, and browse soaps made with olive oil. Honestly, the drive was totally worth it. TIPS: 1. I do recommend making an appointment beforehand, though. 2. For those living in West LA, Nathan also attends the Santa Monica Farmers Market every Wednesday, so that might be a more convenient option to grab these amazing products. Now, my only problem is... I don't think I can go back to the olive oil and balsamic vinegar I used to have.

Variety of olive oils, that I purchased.

This small family owned business is noteworthy and totally worth checking out. When we arrived for a tasting, they had just opened up their small storefront. Co-owner, olive oil sommelier, Josh, is personable and quite knowledgeable about balsamic varieties as well. The olive oil soap smelled divine, so I picked up a couple for gifts. We walked away with a variety of oils which we are thoroughly enjoying at home. We plan to return to replenish when we run out..and I'll be sure to pick up a soap for myself!

Reverence is the Inn's house oil, Josh said lemon + Godmother is a fave blend of his, mine is Creamsicle, and choc balsamic!

I recently attended an olive-oil tasting of this brand at the Inn at the Mission in SJC (2nd Thursday of the month, check Eventbrite for tickets!), and I am happy to learn there is a little brick-and-mortar tasting room/office. (For those who follow my reviews, you know I am from LA and still have friends + family up here, whom I look forward to bringing to this location). Aside from swigging olive oil from mini cups (I officially can now raise my hand to the question: Have any of you ever drank olive oil??), I was served Nuvo's everyday olive oil and various balsamic vinegars in both drink and food concoctions- everything from a raspberry-vodka something, to soup and salad, gelato and cake! I LOVE the quality of this brand, and while they don't bottle the aged balsamics themselves, they found a fantastic proprietor to make it for them. Unfortunately, I still lean more towards said balsamics in my purchases but that will change soon. I learned a lot at the event: how poor quality olive oils leave a film on the tongue and are greasy, that the harvest date should be within three years, and white balsamic exists. I want to expand my understanding (maybe it'll inspire me to change my Yelp headline away from bacon grease haha!) to tasting notes and of all the unique uses for these products (Nuvo has a Youtube channel, a blog and a mini recipe book linked up on their website... apricot glazed chicken caught my eye already). I work in an industry where knowledge in wine, cheese, beer, oils and cooking techniques is a huge asset. I was over-the-moon to start my journey in learning about olive oil from Josh. I admired his enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and backstory. I cannot wait to introduce others to Nuvo and I'm excited to stop in here on my next trip up. Thank you, Josh and Danielle (Nuvo's chef extraordinaire)! Pros: - organic/CA grown - small family business - inexpensive tasting events - super fresh - at most FM from Venice to Chula Vista (check the event calendar- they do the Saturday Torrance and Wednesday Little Italy ones too!) Cons: - not in Oceanside ;)

literally the whole tasting room, haha. Such good olive oil though!

Did you know we had an award-winning olive oil producer right in Long Beach, made from estate-grown olives? (The estate is obviously in NorCal, but it's still their estate.) I certainly didn't, even though our favorite Thai place (ST Noodle) is literally around the corner, until of all places, I discovered them on Groupon a couple weeks ago! It wasn't entirely clear how it worked (their website barely even talks about their tasting room currently), but I decided to give them a shot - I bought a (heavily!) discounted sampler of mini-bottles of their 3 unflavored olive oils and one 18 year balsamic, with the expectation we'd probably get there and buy one or two other things, then contacted them for more info. I was told that normally they're only open during business hours on weekdays (and currently only with advance reservation, due to covid), though they could make an exception and show up for us on Saturday if we needed. Thankfully for them (cause it was clear it would be an imposition), we both often take Friday afternoons off these days, cause what *else* are we gonna do with the vacation time? So I was there yesterday afternoon, and it is such a hidden gem! First off, I can see why it's reservation-only right now, and why they aren't promoting their tasting room as much (they said most of their sales right now are still through their farmers' markets visits): it's basically a tiny office building, where they've turned the front room into a "tasting room", that's basically just a dining table table (fits maybe 8 people snugly) with little bottles all over the room. With social-distancing, and keeping in mind it's indoors (side-note: these reviews are gonna look *so* weird in a year), they can really probably only safely help one group at a time. Nonetheless, since they're so under the radar, we show up, expecting to taste a few things, pick up our bottles and leave, and instead, sit chatting with one of the owners (Josh) about olive oil and how we use it and about their business and how they make all their stuff, and not only did we try basically every olive oil and vinegar they make (including the ones we already bought via the Groupon sampler, even though we said we didn't need to waste his time since we'd already bought them, but he insisted - so cool!), he also recommended and then let us try a bunch of blends (i.e. a few drops of different olive oils mixed with a few drops of different vinegars - also super cool!) He even said if we wanted to try any other combinations, just ask! (I did want: having tried out my hunch, I *strongly* recommend a blend of equal parts jalapeno and serrano over either of those individually.) Tried a delicious jam, too, as well as a fantastic variety of olive so uncommon, we'd never heard of it! And the coolest thing, that you wouldn't ever see at a bigger, more mainstream olive oil shop: at the end, he brought out a plastic jug of something he said they were still fine-tuning, and this batch had literally just finished earlier that day, and did we want to try it? Duh we did - it was a cranberry-pear white balsamic, and it was delicious. (We still gave honest feedback about it, though, since he was looking for it.) We were there for like 45 minutes! Anyway, funny enough, while I could tell their straight evoos were all very high quality, I personally found them a bit bitter (I like evoos that are bold, but more buttery/peppery, as opposed to the more bitter/earthy/grassy character in all three of theirs - they'll all three be awesome in tossed pasta or for cooking, though). But all their flavored evoos were just gorgeous, you could really taste how fresh the adjuncts were when they went in - other than the 50/50 blend of peppers I mentioned, our other favorite was the lemon (tasted like truly fresh zested and squeezed lemon!), so obviously we bought a little bottle of that one (but pretty much all the infusions were excellent). They also had a really neat hickory-smoked(!) aged balsamic, so that left with us, too, as did a jar of those olives. And the great thing is, everything's bottled fresh to order! So not only does that mean, unlike a lot of olive oil shops where everything's pre-bottled, you can get anything they sell in any size bottle... remember that 50/50 pepper blend I keep mentioning? I asked if I could buy a bottle of the blend, and he said sure! And their regular (non-Groupon) prices are super reasonable for such high quality olive oil and vinegars, too! (We paid $39 for the small lemon, medium pepper blend, large smoked balsamic and a jar of olives - definitely not Napa prices!)

We stumbled onto this great little olive oil tasting room. Josh, one of the owners, gave us a delicious tour through his oils and balsamics. He says they will be doing a pop up in the near future! Oh, and be sure to try the kalamata kaviar. Really tasty tapenade. Brought some home and my husband said, "Better remember where you got that!" Yes, he really liked it

Yummy oil n vinegars that up my salad game! Delish!

The way it works is you order first, then wait for them to seat you once a table opens up. It was super busy, so there was a bit of standing around while waiting for a table. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of that setup, but honestly...the food made it completely worth it. What we ordered: * Almond croissant * Ube cruffin * Lemon ricotta pancakes * Breakfast burrito with bacon * Side of potatoes * Strawberry pistachio matcha * Cinnagave shaken espresso Everything was absolutely incredible. I'm seriously craving it again while writing this The food was amazing, and the drinks were next-level good. The café itself is adorable, with both indoor and outdoor seating options. Also, shoutout to the sweet woman with the star clips in her hair! She was so friendly, and my niece loved that she complimented the Jigglypuff on her water bottle. I'll definitely be coming back. This place truly doesn't miss, and I highly recommend giving it a try!

First, a heads-up: parking in the area can be a bit of a challenge, so plan ahead and expect to look for street parking. That said, once you arrive, everything runs impressively smoothly. You'll stand in line to place your order at the register, and then they'll seat you. There are two seating options, an indoor patio and an outdoor patio; both with a really cute, inviting vibe. What really stood out was the thoughtful Mother's Day touch. While we were in line, they offered champagne and gave out roses, white for mothers who are no longer with us and red for those who are. Such a beautiful and meaningful gesture. Once seated, drinks came out quickly, and the food followed shortly after. I was genuinely impressed with how efficient and well-organized everything was, especially given how busy it was. For food, I ordered the Dutch Baby, and my companion had the Bailey's Breakfast, both were delicious and well-prepared. Between the great food, charming decor, and amazing service, this place really delivered. I'll definitely be back.
