Operating on Friday from 10:00 - 14:00, the Downtown Long Beach Farmer's Market takes up the North Promenade between 3rd and 5th street. The information desk and admin center booths are located on the south end (3rd street), with ready to eat hot foods north of 4th. Officially, only service animals are allowed, but we saw quite a few leashed dogs walking with their owners. It was a decent selection of fresh vegetables, much of which seemed to be grown by the vendors (the strawberries being an exception). There was also fresh bread, honey, and nuts. I did stop and purchase some cold noodles from a family run food stall called Yum Yum for $10. They were giving out free samples of the noodles which reeled me in....usually not a fan of cold noodles, but this version was good. Not sticky, with a good bit of chew, packaged very professionally. It came with a little reusable tote bag, which was convenient to use to bring the food home.

Both trays were ready and absolutely fresh. The honorable cheesemongers overlooking shop were very nice and helpful! One female worker was providing samples for a gentleman when he asked for recommendations and my cheesemonger asked what kind of cheese texture I generally liked and offered to give me a cheese from three different animals, which I thought was absolutely awesome! She even offered to help me carry my trays out. The veggie tray was awesome, a great size, half pickled half not pickled, the dips were both amazing! We got the green goddess and Calabrian chili aioli and both were such a hit at our get together. The peppers are slightly spicy and were so delicious. We loved the variety of cheese and did not have a single cheese we didn't like. The petite toasts with the meat and cheese board is a must! So good and crispy and a perfect size for a bite. You could definitely find fruits, vegetables, yogurt, breads, and honey; however, what brings this from 3 stars to 4 stars are the variety of food vendors that attend the market. As you drive by, you'll tend to see about five to eight food trucks serving Jamaican, Philly Cheesesteaks, Birria, Tacos, Pupusas, Churros, and American BBQ. My favorite vendors here are Battambong BBQ, which has a great reputation for their barbecue with Cambodian flavors and Churros Don Abel Jr, for their made-to-order churros. Unfortunately, Battambong was not present this week (as the chef was on vacation for the week), but I'll be back soon for Battambong's delicious smoked brisket and Cambodian-style sausages. Overall, this is a small, local farmer's market with excellent food choices; however, you can definitely find the fresh fruits and vegetables if that's what you seek.
