I'm glad I visited as the chocolate is excellent. This tiny store is filled with many different products, mostly chocolates. They have chocolate bonbons in so many awesome flavors including strawberry lemon, honey Taheen, mango passionfruit, espresso, dark chocolate orange, pecan praline, blueberry, carrot cake, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, dark chocolate coconut, dark chocolate raspberry, dark chocolate hazelnut, very berry, sea salt, caramel caramel, apple and yuzu lemon. Those were just today's flavors. There are others in rotation. They also have hot chocolate mixes including a spicy one, granola, jarred candies, candles, bath salts, and packaged chocolate bar pieces. Additionally, they have house-made pastries like chocolate chip cookies, scones, and macaroons. The store then brings in the outside with many plants and cacti and reading material. See my pictures! The very helpful single staffer was able to answer my questions and very friendly. Although I had only purchased one set of seconds, I opted to buy two more on the spot. The bonbons are usually $3 each and come in 3, 5, 10, 15, or 24 packs. When I got back I was highly anticipating the pieces. In one pack I got raspberry and lemon. I have yet to open the other two. What I tried was delicious and had to stop myself from eating them all. Very happy with Aurora Grace Chocolates.

Who knew the Smurfs were Belgian? The boutique is beautiful, polished, and distinctly European, while the staff manages the harder trick of being knowledgeable and chic while remaining warm and approachable. They're generous with samples, too, which makes discovering the chocolates part of the pleasure rather than simply choosing something from behind glass. Belgium has always struck me as a country perfectly comfortable living a little more quietly beneath the towering cultural influence of its larger neighbors. It is gorgeous, sophisticated, and remarkably good at producing food and brands with a strong sense of craft, and Neuhaus captures that sensibility perfectly. I also like the quiet detail of seeing both Kosher and Halal markings on the door, a small detail that conveys a welcome and common ground I find especially appealing. Around the corner on 16th Street, Monk's Café feels like Neuhaus's spirited neighborhood cousin, with its legendary Belgian beer selection and, I'm sure, very worthy moules frites. Since that first visit, I've also sent Neuhaus as gifts several times through their online store. They offer a useful range of sizes and prices for birthdays, thank yous, or simply sending someone a treat, and they clearly understand that beautiful chocolate still has to survive the trip: my orders arrive expertly packed via FedEx, with ice packs when needed.
