Even as I'm walking towards the front door, I take the light and seeing the wonderful display in the window. Easter is coming ! First of all, I had to get several of the retro postcards that they sell. The artwork is so charming I can't resist and I always feel like I have to share it with others. And it changes each season so you really can learn about greeting card history by looking at the cute details of the art and the postcard. Chloe was very kind and she knew the history behind a marshmallow caramel chocolate that they sell, especially at this confectionary. Another thing I like to pick up is one of their gingerbread cookies. They are hand pressed and I just feel so spoiled to get to enjoy this beautiful and very special cookie. Thank you all so much for all your hard work. You make such wonderful treats and are also a tour guide of your historical shop. You're historians on chocolate and this city. Thank you so much for all your hard work . Past , present and future ! How wonderful we can enjoy even to this day this beautiful building and see all the beautiful candies and chocolates and cards . And here are wonderful stories . 160 years of sweet treats. I'm really grateful that you carry on this lovely tradition. Thank you for everything. And thanks to your suppliers and vendors for all they do too. I had a wonderful time.
If you're making the mandatory stop at Franklin Fountain for ice cream, do yourself a favor and pop into the candy shop right next door. It's perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. Even better? We tried the signature and dark roast hot chocolate, and both were rich, smooth, and perfectly balanced--not too sweet, not too heavy. The shop itself has this charming, old-fashioned feel that makes the whole experience even better, and the staff were warm and welcoming without rushing you. A cozy spot that makes a simple cup of hot chocolate feel like a treat.

History and quality chocolate are preserved inside this historic candy shop. On a famous block in Philadelphia, Shane Confectionery is an old school candy shop from the early 1900s. Walk inside and a woman dressed in a period outfit will proudly walk you through the store, including where they make chocolate in the back. All kinds of chocolates are made in house using beans roasted nearby. The vanilla and coconut buttercream chocolates still use the original recipe from 1910-1911. They have lollipops and other candies from other companies too.
An old time candy shop full of deliciousness - we tried a variety of the chocolates as well as a milk chocolate iced drinking chocolate which was delicious. Not often do you find old-school handmade chocolate like you do here, so definitely stop in for a visit!

Shane Confectionery is a historic candy store and candy producer that opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1863. It was founded by Samuel L. Herring. Members of the Herring family operated a number of candy-making properties in the Philadelphia area since the 1840s. Samuel L. Herring opened a wholesale confectionery supply business at 112 Market in the 1850s, expanding to 110 Market Street in 1863. Following the American Civil War, his son Benjamin took over the business. He later partnered with one of his father's employees, Daniel Dengler. The two continued to sell wholesale confectionery goods at the location until Benjamin's death. Dengler partnered with his son Frank and they continued to operate the business until they sold it to William Westcott in 1899. After Westcott relocated to New Jersey in 1910, the business was sold to Edward Shane. The Shane family would continue to operate it for the next 99 years. In 2010, Shane Confectionery was purchased by brothers Ryan and Eric Berley, founders of the Franklin Fountain: a vintage ice cream parlor and soda fountain three doors down. Shane Confectionery is believed to be the longest-running confectionery business in the United States. My family and I recently visited Shane Confectionery while we were on a short trip to Philadelphia. We had just stopped at the Franklin Fountain for some delicious ice cream treats. It was explained to us that all of the candy toppings used for the ice cream were crafted three doors down at Shane Confectionery, so we decided to check out the shop. When we stepped inside, we felt like we were at Bill's Candy Shop from the opening scene of "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". It almost seemed like a confectionery museum. The employees explained that the Berley Brothers worked tirelessly to restore the shop and candy making equipment back into the shining shape that it had been in in the prime of its existence. Much of the equipment was vintage, including a 1920s cast-iron buttercream churn. The back room was even turned into a chocolate café. Although all of the candy looked so delicious, we decided not to purchase anything. We were in the middle of a bad heat wave and we feared that any candy we purchased would melt before we could safely get it back to our AirBnb. We look forward to returning in the future (preferably when it's much cooler).
My favorite thing to do is to get a cup of drinking chocolate from Shane and walk around the city on a cold winter day. They have multiple flavors but do yourself a favor and get the Cinnamon and Chili hot chocolate. Don't forget to have them add a house marshmallow to it.
I had the pleasure of visiting this place on Thursday. I am visiting from California and my friend took me here. The store is beautiful inside with so much attention to details. All the candies are amazing and the service was second to none. I purchased some beautiful delicious fruit slices and a momento mori ginger cookie. They are all handmade with life. It is a great experience and located in a historic building.
Chocolates were good with unique flavors but a bit on the pricy side for 6 small pieces. We also got their milk hot chocolate. It's very rich in flavor. Service was fine as it wasn't too busy but hot chocolate did take a minute to come out.

A lovely and unique experience. If in the area I highly recommend visiting. The drinking chocolate is truly decadent and a special treat. The $1.50 for the marshmallow is worth it, although maybe not if also doing whip cream. Do check to make sure you get charged correctly. There were two errors on my receipt and a small error in preparation. I think the employee was just new since my daughter commented after that she seems a little nervous. Chocolates were good with unique flavors but a bit on the pricy side for 6 small pieces. We also got their milk hot chocolate. It's very rich in flavor. Service was fine as it wasn't too busy but hot chocolate did take a minute to come out. read more
Super cute chocolate shop on Market. Beautiful chocolates, yummy caramels and fun gingerbread cookies. We also enjoyed the drinking chocolates. They were all good, but the spicy one has a great kick. We added marshmallow too. Service for drinking chocolate was a bit slow, but very friendly. The man who rang us up while also friendly and informative. read more
This is a real treat, pun intended. The old throwback candy shop with an ancient cash register and hot chocolate in the back. The candy is amazing. It's reflected in the price, but expected as this is a tourist area, the shop is hundred years old, and it has a tremendous reputation. read more

This place is so charming, I loved it. There are so many flavors of chocolate, it's amazing, and it's so hard to pick favorites. So we decided to pick one of each in a large box, and the lady at the counter managed to fill it to the brim. Lovely flavors, not overly sweet like some other chocolate brands. We also tried hot chocolate which is made to order and it is divine. I had the cinnamon and chili flavor, and my daughter had the plain hot chocolate, but there was nothing plain about it. Even if you don't like chocolate it's worth stopping by to look at the stunning antique store furnishings and decor. read more

This place is absolutely adorable ambiance-wise. The candies all look so great and they have a lot of classic old-school candies that you can try. They also have a hot chocolate bar in the back of the store. You can also make your own truffles box or buy a pre-paid one. My biggest qualm is that it's really expensive. I got my mom a box of chocolates that was over $50 and it's a pretty small box. If I come back, I'll probably get the hot chocolate again or one of the grab and go candies for myself. read more
This is my third to fourth visits to this cute chocolate store. I took my friend visit and she loved the décor and the chocolate they displayed. We bought few chocolate bars and thought the flavors were very interesting. It is perfect gift / souvenirs to give to your love ones. It is worth visiting. Also, if you go to Franklin Ice cream (at the corner of the block), you can get 10% discount on your purchase to Shane Confectionery. Just show your receipt. We didn't know until afterwards. Go check out this candy store! It's the oldest candy store in the nation! So many great choices, and they make a lot of their candy from scratch! I got raspberry lemon fudge, raspberry caramel, and sour raspberry gummies (I like raspberry...) the fudge and the caramel the make, and let me tell, some of the best I've had. The fudge was so smooth and so flavorful. It is pretty decadent, so a little goes a long way! The caramel was so soft, and did NOT get stuck in your teeth! I love caramel, but sometimes it can be a pain to eat. This one was perfect. The only thing that was kind of a bust, was the Mayer lemon lemonade. They basically roll out a meter lemon, cut it, stick a candy stick in it, and your supposed to drink from the candy stick. The problem is the stick is solid, not a straw. They told us to suck and that a natural hole would form, and then you would get juice from the lemon. We really tried and that never happened. The lemon was tasty, the candy was tasty, but the execution of them together was a bust. The staff is so friendly and they answered all our questions, gave us samples, and helped us find the candy that was perfect for us! This is such a cute space, highly recommend checking it out! read more

5 stars for basically everything inside this store. Like the Franklin Fountain, you can't beat the fancy interior and the old timey and genuine feel. I've been to similar stores in New England and on the west coast and this one beats em all (gotta keep the mom and wife's sweet teeth satisfied with chocolate year round). I don't think I got to experience everything they have to offer but it looks like they make customized chocolates there in front of you. The store associates dress the part, too. You know what else? Free samples. You at least have to go in for that and watch the chocolate get made. Hard to say no to free chocolate coming from the kitchen. I bought a small box of 10 chocolates--I got to choose them all--and got bags of dark chocolate covered espresso beans, dark chocolate covered almonds, dark chocolate malt balls(?) (like the whoppers candy), and cayenne chocolate. Chocolate made in house is always so super rich and good. Chocolate is 5 stars. I was there strictly for chocolate so I didn't spend much time looking at the other sugary delights. They've got chocolate covered pretzels and everything comes in milk or dark chocolate: caramel, lavender(!), nuts, cream, etc. They've got holiday themed candies and chocolate, for example, for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, etc. Supposedly it's the only store around that sells gelt. Ordering is a little confusing and the prices are higher than average but you get what you pay for. The store associate was nice in labeling all the chocolates in the box for me so I wouldn't forget what each one was. Definitely a nice place to travel out of your way for. I gotta go back and see what else they have to offer. read more

Shane Confectionery is absolutely one of my favourite places in Philly. Every time I have a friend in from out of town, I walk them through Old City and towards Penn's Landing just so I can stop by! I love that the confectionery has such an old-fashioned ambiance and it doesn't hurt that the chocolates are delicious! It's a pretty small store so it can get crowded pretty easily, especially when there are a lot of little kids running around. When it's empty, it's an amazing place to spend a few minutes just browsing. I highly recommend getting at least one piece of chocolate on your way out! read more
