First of all, I had to get several of the retro postcards that they sell. The artwork is so charming I can't resist and I always feel like I have to share it with others. And it changes each season so you really can learn about greeting card history by looking at the cute details of the art and the postcard. Chloe was very kind and she knew the history behind a marshmallow caramel chocolate that they sell, especially at this confectionary. Another thing I like to pick up is one of their gingerbread cookies. They are hand pressed and I just feel so spoiled to get to enjoy this beautiful and very special cookie. How have I grown up in Pennsylvania, not very far from Philly, and never come to this shop? It was such a treat coming here. I visited with my kids who just had the best time helping to pick out the clear toy candy for our gingerbread house. This is one of the very few places you can find clear toy candy, an old time treat that is essentially lollipops that are melted into metal molds and make various shapes like bunnies, buckets, tractors, you name it. The clear toy candy isn't cheap. In fact, it was probably about 5 times as much as the candy store that sold these near my home in Pennsylvania. But I'm just glad they still exist. It's an old form of candy that was brought over the US by German immigrants and called called "barley candy" initially due to using barley sugar before cane sugar became common. The store goes back a far way and they also offer a variety of chocolates. I picked up a few of their dark chocolate nonperils, which were beautifully packaged, priced accordingly expensive, but seemed like a special treat and a nice holiday gift to give for my family who loves chocolate. I can't wait to come back, and more importantly, see side of the family's reaction when I bring these clear toys for the holidays. They're so difficult to find. read more

Shane Confectionery is a historic candy store and candy producer that opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1863. It was founded by Samuel L. Herring. Members of the Herring family operated a number of candy-making properties in the Philadelphia area since the 1840s. Samuel L. Herring opened a wholesale confectionery supply business at 112 Market in the 1850s, expanding to 110 Market Street in 1863. Following the American Civil War, his son Benjamin took over the business. He later partnered with one of his father's employees, Daniel Dengler. The two continued to sell wholesale confectionery goods at the location until Benjamin's death. Dengler partnered with his son Frank and they continued to operate the business until they sold it to William Westcott in 1899. After Westcott relocated to New Jersey in 1910, the business was sold to Edward Shane. The Shane family would continue to operate it for the next 99 years. In 2010, Shane Confectionery was purchased by brothers Ryan and Eric Berley, founders of the Franklin Fountain: a vintage ice cream parlor and soda fountain three doors down. Shane Confectionery is believed to be the longest-running confectionery business in the United States. My family and I recently visited Shane Confectionery while we were on a short trip to Philadelphia. We had just stopped at the Franklin Fountain for some delicious ice cream treats. It was explained to us that all of the candy toppings used for the ice cream were crafted three doors down at Shane Confectionery, so we decided to check out the shop. When we stepped inside, we felt like we were at Bill's Candy Shop from the opening scene of "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". It almost seemed like a confectionery museum. The employees explained that the Berley Brothers worked tirelessly to restore the shop and candy making equipment back into the shining shape that it had been in in the prime of its existence. Much of the equipment was vintage, including a 1920s cast-iron buttercream churn. The back room was even turned into a chocolate café. Although all of the candy looked so delicious, we decided not to purchase anything. We were in the middle of a bad heat wave and we feared that any candy we purchased would melt before we could safely get it back to our AirBnb. We look forward to returning in the future (preferably when it's much cooler). read more

A very cool candy store with a lot of history. I've been coming here for years and always enjoy snagging something to bring home. I came in specifically for malt balls and a chocolate bar. As I was perusing, the very nice employee started chatting it up with us. I never realized in all of my years that they had a back area where customers could go and get drinking chocolate. This place is absolutely adorable ambiance-wise. The candies all look so great and they have a lot of classic old-school candies that you can try. They also have a hot chocolate bar in the back of the store. You can also make your own truffles box or buy a pre-paid one. My biggest qualm is that it's really expensive. I got my mom a box of chocolates that was over $50 and it's a pretty small box. If I come back, I'll probably get the hot chocolate again or one of the grab and go candies for myself. read more

Go check out this candy store! It's the oldest candy store in the nation! So many great choices, and they make a lot of their candy from scratch! I got raspberry lemon fudge, raspberry caramel, and sour raspberry gummies (I like raspberry...) the fudge and the caramel the make, and let me tell, some of the best I've had. The fudge was so smooth and so flavorful. It is pretty decadent, so a little goes a long way! The caramel was so soft, and did NOT get stuck in your teeth! I love caramel, but sometimes it can be a pain to eat. This one was perfect. The only thing that was kind of a bust, was the Mayer lemon lemonade. They basically roll out a meter lemon, cut it, stick a candy stick in it, and your supposed to drink from the candy stick. The problem is the stick is solid, not a straw. They told us to suck and that a natural hole would form, and then you would get juice from the lemon. We really tried and that never happened. The lemon was tasty, the candy was tasty, but the execution of them together was a bust. The staff is so friendly and they answered all our questions, gave us samples, and helped us find the candy that was perfect for us! This place is so charming, I loved it. There are so many flavors of chocolate, it's amazing, and it's so hard to pick favorites. So we decided to pick one of each in a large box, and the lady at the counter managed to fill it to the brim. Lovely flavors, not overly sweet like some other chocolate brands. We also tried hot chocolate which is made to order and it is divine. I had the cinnamon and chili flavor, and my daughter had the plain hot chocolate, but there was nothing plain about it. 5 stars for basically everything inside this store. Like the Franklin Fountain, you can't beat the fancy interior and the old timey and genuine feel. I've been to similar stores in New England and on the west coast and this one beats em all (gotta keep the mom and wife's sweet teeth satisfied with chocolate year round). I don't think I got to experience everything they have to offer but it looks like they make customized chocolates there in front of you. The store associates dress the part, too. You know what else? Free samples. You at least have to go in for that and watch the chocolate get made. Hard to say no to free chocolate coming from the kitchen. I bought a small box of 10 chocolates--I got to choose them all--and got bags of dark chocolate covered espresso beans, dark chocolate covered almonds, dark chocolate malt balls(?) (like the whoppers candy), and cayenne chocolate. Chocolate made in house is always so super rich and good. Chocolate is 5 stars. I was there strictly for chocolate so I didn't spend much time looking at the other sugary delights. They've got chocolate covered pretzels and everything comes in milk or dark chocolate: caramel, lavender(!), nuts, cream, etc. They've got holiday themed candies and chocolate, for example, for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, etc. Supposedly it's the only store around that sells gelt. Ordering is a little confusing and the prices are higher than average but you get what you pay for. The store associate was nice in labeling all the chocolates in the box for me so I wouldn't forget what each one was. Definitely a nice place to travel out of your way for. Shane Confectionery is absolutely one of my favourite places in Philly. Every time I have a friend in from out of town, I walk them through Old City and towards Penn's Landing just so I can stop by! I love that the confectionery has such an old-fashioned ambiance and it doesn't hurt that the chocolates are delicious! It's a pretty small store so it can get crowded pretty easily, especially when there are a lot of little kids running around. When it's empty, it's an amazing place to spend a few minutes just browsing. I highly recommend getting at least one piece of chocolate on your way out! read more

I've told my family repeatedly about how amazing the candy is. I was wrong. I splurged and spent way too much on candy for Valentines. And was so disappointed when I opened the box. The buttercreams are about the size of your thumbnail. Nothing tasted the way I remembered it. I never dreamed I'd say this but I recommend avoiding them.
