Arthurs is he best cafe you can imagine. Lovely staff, yes very attractive as well. They understand…read moregood coffee. They love dogs which suits me fine. They have seats outside in the sun or inside in the warm. I don't live in Cranbrook, but whenever I am there I hope to have time to pop in for half an hour. I've never had a bad word about this place, I wouldn't believe it anyway

I live just down the road and come in reasonably regularly. As far as I am concerned, this is the…read morebest coffee shop in existence - bearing in mind that I heavily dislike Cranbrook and admittedly am a little prejudiced towards the businesses and services on offer (you would be if you had grown up here too), that is quite something for me to say. The coffee is absolutely to die for. I believe they get it from a supplier called John Street (there's a little plaque on the wall inside), and it's the best coffee I've ever had. Starbucks, Costa, and the rest pale in comparison. It definitely helps that the staff clearly know what they're doing and when you watch them make it you can see them put real passion into it which adds so much to the coffee. The food I haven't had as much of, but the baked goods are of similar quality to the coffee, and the breakfast/brunch menu isn't big but what I've had of it has been delicious and very well-presented. Half of the appeal though is the atmosphere. The café is named after their dog, Arthur, who is a constant presence and is the sweetest, friendliest thing - always coming up and wagging his tail at you or sniffing you. The staff are also lovely - you will be greeted and interacted with in a positive, happy way the second you walk in the door, and in addition to being very very good at their jobs they will bend over backwards to make you feel comfortable. This has created a really welcoming and relaxed vibe, and they've managed to make what is a really tiny space that in a previous life was rather trashy and run-down into a community hub of sorts. I have a weekly meeting with my Latin tutor there, and I regularly see big groups of people sitting in the back just having a really nice chat and enjoying time together, which is something we didn't really have at an affordable price point beforehand. If I had to meet up with anyone, I would now always do it here. If you're looking for a nice place to get a coffee and cake or brunch and catch up with someone this is 100% it. When I escape from Cranbrook this will probably be the one thing I venture back for because I guarantee the local equivalent wherever I go will be inferior!!

A great place to meet up with friends over a cup of coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Pleasant staff…read morewho have never made me feel rushed and who are willing to assist when asked.

When I got there I found out it shuts before the advertised time on the web. When I pointed this…read moreout the waitress didn't care a jot even though I pointed out this could be very disappointing for customers coming from out of the area. I have several food intolerances so when asking about the ingredients in their homemade cakes I got a message back via the waitress that she can't guarantee the cakes were free from what I was intolerant to. As people with food intolerances are always ending up having to go without gorgeous food, I asked if I could have more detail of what was in the cakes so I could make a decision on what it was I could or couldn't eat, just in case there was something I could have. This was very obviously an inconvenience to the waitress and the manager who had baked them. She tried again to say she couldn't guarantee anything because obviously this was the quickest way to solve the issue for herself, but after explaining that I'd like to try to see if there was something I could eat, it was again very plain that I was wasting her time. It was late afternoon and they weren't busy, so I would have appreciated a couple of minutes of her time without the attitude. After finding out there was indeed a piece of cake I could eat, I sat down to enjoy it only to be served it with more attitude by the waitress. If she could have got away with grunting at me I sure she would have! I unfortunately had to ask for a pot of hot water as the tea didn't come with one, and AGAIN got a look saying 'are you bothering me again?!'. Cleanliness was also not great with tea-stained table clothes, dying roses on the table, and also dust on the teapot holding the roses which was next to an open sugar bowl which no doubt had the same amount of dust in it! Also, amazingly, a dog walking around the kitchen area with it's bed behind the serving counter!! (Yes, I am about to inform environmental health dept!!) Lastly, my table was being cleared before I had finished. I did notice however, that the other table still in there didn't have their table touched, so I'm guessing that was a touch of nastiness from the waitress also. I was there looking for a place to take 18-20 friends for my birthday which is coming up soon as we fancied a gorgeous afternoon tea, but we will definitely be going somewhere else after that experience!
