Limetree Kitchen - This is the mackerel dish we had - delicious!

I'm very sorry Barbara C had an adverse experience at this restaurant because my wife and I had a…read morerelentlessly and unequivocally positive visit. Every aspect went well: courteous reception; choice of where to sit (we opted for the small garden, it being a warm night, which was delightful); very friendly, efficient service and above all delicious, imaginative food and drink. The format is rather like tapas in that you order 2-3 dishes per person plus one or 2 side orders, but the helpings are more substantial than the normal tapas plates. They don't have a paper menu, just a blackboard on which the day's offerings are listed, so I took a photo of that with my smartphone and we looked at it in comfort at our table. We had some mackerel on beetroot and carrot vegetables, tomatoes and ricotta, VERY delicious kerala chicken and an equally delicious mixed leaves and vegetable salad. The kofta balls were good, but relied for their taste on the very good sauce rather than having any intrinsic flavour. The skinny fries with aioli were very good indeed. We washed it all down with a bottle of the house white, a very good Falanghina, and without us asking they put water on the table - I wish all restaurants did this as a matter of course. The atmosphere was nicely informal but characterful and the tables close enough to be gemuetlich but far enough apart to be discreet. A black cat wandered around being friendly. The whole atmosphere was very pleasant and enjoyable. We'll definitely go again when we are next in Lewes.

The first time I had a perfectly cooked ribeye steak with a lovely bone marrow butter. The second time I had a pulled pork ramen. I have to admit, as a huge ramen fan I think this might be the best I have ever had. The staff in front of house as well as in the kitchen are incredibly friendly and helpful. The menu is quite small, which in my eyes is probably one of the biggest reasons this "farm to table" hot spot is doing everything right! If you have a chance do go out of your way to take a visit. You will not be disappointed!

I mean as did everything, including the guy behind the counter, but really I wanted to buy everything. At home I was so impressed I had to post a 5 star review. Their bread tastes wonderful and is so flavourful. I already have a warm summer's day plan in mind revolving around buying a picnic worth of food from Flint Owl Bakery and sprawling over the race course. Perfect.

Flint Owl Bakery is based in Glynde in East Sussex. Here, they produce all their bread by hand, using little or no yeast, no preservatives or additives of any kind, and using very traditional processes. They specialise in sourdoughs but also do bloomers, wholemeal and granary loafs, and seasonal loafs depending on the time of year. As well as bread, they do a number of cakes and buns, and actually have a coffee shop on site although I didn't try it on this occasion. The bread truly is the best I have ever eaten. Bread can nowadays come with a bad reputation, but if you eat good quality bread like this without all the hidden extras, I don't see how it can possibly do you harm. The only downside is that it tastes so good it's impossible to stop at a slice or two! I would recommend the fig and walnut and the sea salt and rosemary. I plan to work my way through the other varieties asap. Go, buy, stock up your freezer, and never buy supermarket bread ever again!

Wickle has two stores in Lewes, one on the High Street, and one in the Needlemakers. Their store…read morein the Needlemakers sells menswear, but in spite of that it's probably my favourite of the two because some of the clothes are pretty cool. Amongst other things they sell flat caps, fedoras, beautiful butter soft brown leather journals and coin purses (£21.20). They also sell boys-y things like old fashioned mess tins and constructable cardboard dinosaurs. There is some cross over of stock from the high street store, for example with their own brand scents (£29.50) which come very tastefully packaged in plain glass bottles, save for a coloured button denoting which of their four scents is inside. They also sell interesting old fashioned notebooks at both stores. The high street store is larger, and has a café at the back, although it is also more twee. It stocks women's and children's clothes and accessories aimed at the mummies of Lewes. Saying that they do have some lovely things, and the cakes are very tasty. They certainly don't go in for the minimalism of other nearby shops like Flint and Adamczewski, and as a result it's a good place to go for a rummage if you are gift shopping.

As you go in they have fantastic wool blankets, jewellery, perfume, hats and scarves. Then they have two or three rails of fabulous women's clothes-all from ethical brands, all reasonable prices and all that great style on the go, chic comfort look that I love. Then you hit toys and kitchenalia- cake stands, milk jugs, wooden letters to decorate, soft toys and kid's clothes. Finally, at the back a big finale of white wooden tables-a cafe! Genius.

Cheese Please is a shop that sells chocolate…read more ...... ... O.K. I couldn't go on lying to you like that, partly because it was quite a bad lie, and I think you would have most likely foiled my dastardly plan. So as you stupid ones at the back of the class are still trying to work out just what this shop does sell, I will address YOU at the front of the class, and explain exactly what Cheese Please does sell, and in what manner it does this. Well it sells loads of amazing cheeses, lovingly displayed in this delightful shop. There are always over 10 cheddars and 10 different blue cheeses as well as a veritable selection of soft and hard cheeses . with all this cheese, they make unsurprisingly very nice baguettes, which I had, with cheese in! and which was very well priced, so I was very happy. They also sell non cheese products, but I don't want to dwell on them, other than the quince jelly, which is amazing with cheese. Cheese cheese cheese. Please Oh yeah...I should probably mention that it is also a contender for Sussex Foodshop of the year. So there.

None the less, I came here recently to purchase a platter for a friend of mine who is far more partial to some of the blue stuff. I was shocked and impressed by the range available here; cheeses from all over the county, country and world were available. If like me, you have no idea what you're looking for, the knowledgeable staff are more than willing to assist you.
