Bad customer service. I had been seeing Jocelyn in the Concord location for a year. My color and highlights at my most recent last appointment in February went off the rails. Jocelyn used the dryer to speed up color processing even though I had been sitting for quite a while. In the end, I had extremely bright highlights around my face, no highlights in my part where I was trying to blend gray (the whole purpose of color) and then brassy hair everywhere else. I called to schedule a correction and couldn't get in for 2 weeks. Then a few days before the appointment, I get a voicemail saying Jocelyn is no longer there but the owner, Helen, can do my correction in Acton. When I arrived for my correction, I told the owner about the issues with my hair - she acknowledged it and offered to fix it with a combination of foils and toner. She almost didn't do the toner, but I insisted as that was the correction I truly needed. She finally does it, dries my hair then starts trimming it as she said it was uneven and asked who cut it last; it was Jocelyn. As we are talking, she informed me Jocelyn gave a 4 weeks notice too so Jocelyn knew she was dumping me after a crappy color. When I go to leave, she was grumbling about what to charge me and charged me $120. I was upset and she went onto to say that this was more than just toner (ironically), and she was giving me a deal. No apology for anything, just asks for more money. She totally took me for a ride - I wouldn't have let her do anything had I known she was just trying to get money out of me. I just paid $155 the week before plus tip. So now I have spent $300+ in 2 weeks and my hair looks ok. I would look elsewhere - I've never been charged for corrections nor upsold in this way. read more

I was pretty hesitant to write a review but I wanted to share my experience with this salon. I am not from the area and my brother was getting married in Westford (11/11/17) and after google searching I found this salon. I called and scheduled an appointment for hairstyle and makeup since I was in the wedding party.I do not wear much makeup so when I met with the stylist I explained that I wanted light makeup and gold eye shadow (bride's request)-as she was applying the makeup SEVERAL employees came over to watch her "technique" - this did concern me but I assumed she was the professional... Once the makeup was complete she began the hair style- I had a picture of what I wanted (1/2 up 1/2 down loose braid look with a clip and curls) after SEVERAL attempts she could not get the braid- TIME was getting close and I needed to go because I was in the wedding party! I asked if she could just twist the sides and curl my hair. As I was leaving I just wanted to GET OUT OF THE SALON I had to register with my address so that payment can be completed... TIME CONSUMING! Once I got outside and saw my makeup OMG I was horrified- holding back tears I went to the store to buy some makeup sponges to lighten up the makeup since it was SO heavy and not blended it looked as though a mortician did it! Foundation was heavy and orange tone not blended at all, eye shadow looked like a brown thumb print (not gold or blended on the eye lid), eyebrows were so dark looked like a sharpie, just overall not good-pics posted. I was unable to fix the makeup myself so I had the stylist working on the bride fix my makeup- 6 make up wipes later I was off to a fresh start. One of the bridesmaids had to fix my hair because she said it was HORRIBLE in the back. I tried to go to the salon to speak with them the next day before heading home from the wedding but they were closed. I did reach out to this salon by email- through their website just to let them know about my experience and to inform them that OTHER STYLIST could see that we were having issues BUT they did not say ANYTHING (one stylist even sat down next to us watching)! If you see a coworker struggling please help them or say something because I wasted hours in a salon, looked like a clown, had to pay TWICE for hair and makeup. The cut was Ok/pretty good. The conversation was delightful and the receptionist super cute and friendly. My problem is that I need to be more assertive. I think what I wanted was more of a layered look, but I fumbled with the pictures/examples and felt weird because the chick had an egg timer going that kind of stressed me out. I expected her to put in a couple clips into my hair and put some thought into how the layers may grow out over the next few months/weeks. She didn't. She did the same thing that the lady at the barber shop would have done for 15.00, except it was 40.00 instead. That totally bummed me out. Not saying she did a bad job. I just don't communicate well under pressure. I always get stage fright at hair salons because I know they secretly despise pintrest pictures and I am out of my element as a dude. Even though I wear my hair long, I like for it to be cleaned up around the neck and ears a little. She didn't do that, and I had trouble asking because the egg timer was about to go off and I get in my own head sometimes and can't say what I'm thinking. But I was annoyed--by the timer and the methodology. My hair is now slightly shorter, but it doesn't look like I got a haircut, really. Like I said, its just like the barbershop lady would have done. Here's my main gripe. When I came in, my hair was sopping wet from a shower and wash. I have my own method and I don't put store bought chemicals into my hair. I use aloe leaves and avocado oil and my hair is always a perfect texture. I didn't even realize what was happening, but after telling her my hair is freshly washed out of the shower--she proceeds to walk me over and wash my hair (like huh? I'm sopping wet what are you doing!). Again, I froze up and wanted to say Oh my God, lady, please don't wash my hair right now you're going to make it dry and ugly with whatever non-vetted crap you're about to put into it. Anyway, ya...whatever nutrients were left from my regular routine were quickly sucked out with the wash, leaving my hair feeling frizzy and over-washed. It did not dry nicely at all. Not sure if I will go back. I really should just learn to verbalize my feelings better in the moment, but for some reason, I just let people do whatever they think is best. This is a great Aveda hair salon located a little outside the city, but perfect if you are in the suburbs and need a quick trim. I went there for a semi color and trim last weekend and the service was great. The hair stylist kept the chit chat going but didn't bore me or pressure me to talk too much. The color went on well, and she even brought me a magazine (read my mind) without me having to ask. The price was right - at 95$ for the color, trim and dry. I was a little bothered that I couldn't put the tip on my credit card along with the service, but that's a minor detail considering how well everything else went. I will definitely go back. A no-fuss haircut and color at an affordable price. read more

Had a bad experience with a haircut gone awry, but the owner and her star salonist rescued it for me. It looked great when Debbie, one of the stars at the salon, finished it up. The owner is dedicated to pleasing her clients and always open to suggestion, few salons have such an atmosphere. The Aveda facial/chakra therapy are out of this world. I try to go once amonth. Olga, the therapist has magic hands. When I leave there after a treatment day, I feel renewed and calm..... The prices are in par with most salons in Acton but service and quality quite a bit better than the others I've tried. For now, this is my go to place for a feel good day.... read more

I used to go to an Aveda salon back home and since I had just moved to the area I found NuYu via Yelp. Taking the reviews with a grain of salt, I decided to give it a try since it was convenient to my new place and I am not too neurotic with my hair. Called and made an appointment for a Saturday. A day or two before my appointment I get a call that their credit card machine is down so I need to bring a check or cash... inconvenient but not a deal breaker. First impression walking in: tiny, but you can write it off as cozy. Jaylyn was running late but while I was waiting, the in-house esthetician offered a special of $5 a gelish shellac manicure which I agreed to get done while my hair was being processed (more about that later). Finally got in the chair and there seemed to be a miscommunication when booking my appointment... as I was there for only color, NOT a cut. Got that sorted out and gave her a brief rundown of my hair history and what my previous hairstylist did for me (high & lowlights with an all over toner) and how I lot of hair so typically need more color mixed up. Let her have control over what colors to use and what would look best. Sat down for the manicure as she started to foil my head and this is where it starts to go wrong. The manicurist told me the gelish polish typically last for about two weeks... not really true as I have had mine last for a month. However, I have never had a dry manicure in a salon before. She did not place my hands in warm water to soften the cuticles, instead she applied this cuticle gel and started scraping my nails. It was the most PAINFUL experience and the base of my nails hurt to the touch for days afterward. When she scraped along the inside of my nail to get out "dirt" it honestly felt like she was trying to torture me... but it doesn't end there. As she was applying the polish she told me there was "run off" into my cuticle due to the fact that I was not pressing my fingers flat.... WTF?! I have had gelish manicures done for YEARS and that has never happened before. She went on to say about how they were having problems with the light they were using--DUH! of course you are, it's not even made by the same company that manufactures the polish and probably bought off Amazon. This ended up resulting in the polish being uneven and only one top coat. Honestly, I could've done a better manicure on myself at home. Moving on... Jaylyn takes me back to her chair and finishes foiling (in a different pattern and direction than I'm used to) after she mixes more color. A mere 10 minutes later she has me go back to wash out only half of the foils.... Yes you heard me, half. So as I'm lying in the sink waiting for the other half of the foils to finish processing, I'm definitely questioning how it will look. Fortunately it came out decent, although I'm not sure why she didn't do an overall toner like I had mentioned at the beginning. As it turns out, you get charged an additional $55 for extra color... couldn't you have disclaimed that when I told you at the start that I probably needed extra color?! I have NEVER been charged for extra color and the fact that it got added on at the end left a bad taste in my mouth. Also I got charged the full price for the manicure but at that point whatever as everyone is cleaning up around me so I'm feeling extra rushed to get out of there. TL;DR Won't be back - Worst manicure of my life -3 - Hidden cost for extra color -2 - Everyone was nice/friendly +1 - Easy to find with lots of parking +1 read more

This review is specifically for Nikki. I'm very disappointed with her service and ability to listen to customers. Yesterday my daughter had an appointment for a blow dry for a special event the following day. I asked Nikki for a blow dry with round brush. My daughter finished the appointment with elaborate braids which were NOT appropriate for the event. I was waiting in the salon but Nikki did not bother to ask my opinion about the braids. She simply did it. I'm so disappointed that she did not honor my initial request. Who wants a stylist who DOES NOT LISTEN? I switched salons due to a horrible hair cut and chose Nu Yu specifically because they are an Aveda salon. Since I didn't know anyone I was so lucky to get Nikki. Nikki immediately understood the style cut I wanted and proceeded to give a great hair cut. The receptionist is always helpful and upbeat. I love the Aveda products and Niki, but the Salon overall needs an update and the bathroom is well, not great. Doesn't feel or look clean. Their prices are higher than other Aveda salons in the area. Would give them more stars if they updated and improved the bathroom. Not a good feel for massage or other services. Small rooms and just not up to the standards of other Aveda salons. read more

Besides being extremely knowledgable and clearly passionate about what she does, she takes the time to get to know you somewhat and personalizes her services to cater to every individual's specific needs and wants. She is thorough, takes her time, and doesn't make you feel rushed. She is positive and pleasant but doesn't go to the extreme of gabbing too much and not allowing you to just relax and enjoy the experience. Worst wax I've ever had. I had my legs and bikini done. My girl was really nice and I loved talking with her but there was some major issues. The wax in the beginning wasn't the right temperature and it took over a half hour to do JUST the front of one lower leg! She had to pick tiny pieces off and it was Very unnecessarily painful. I realized that was a mistake and let it go. We continued waxing (2 1/2 hours later) and she hands me a towel to wipe the wax off myself, puts nothing on my legs/bikini (I've never not had some type of lotion/serum), and walks out. I'm shocked not only by this but also that she hasn't waxed the front of my bikini area at all! I ask her to come back in and she says that's called a "high bikini" (another $20 although they tried to charge me $30!). I figure if I've gone this long I might as well do this. So she waxes a little on the side and top and gives me a towel again to wipe off extra wax. I hurriedly get out of there to get back to my husband and kids and when I get home I'm shocked after closer examination. I had wax and hair everywhere! It took an hour to get the wax off and there was so much hair. Not just 10 or 20 stray hairs. I had a patch a little bigger then my palm on my inner left thigh! I had about 30 strays where she waxed on my top bikini area and there was two big drops of wax in the middle of my bikini area that I had to rip out! Are you serious!?! I filled my razor with hair multiple times shaving my legs afterwards. Worst experience and I won't be going back. I want a refund!! read more

I went to style my hair for prom at this place, my friend had recommended it. I've been to other salons and I know that once you get there for a styling appointment, they wash your hair, blow dry, then flat iron or style it how you want. I wanted to be courteous and washed my hair before I got there. Big mistake. The stylist wouldn't stop mentioning how next time, I should come with my hair dry or else "it would be a super super long appointment". I was confused, as I figured, it was most salons policy to wash your hair before styling anyway. However, I went along with it, and she blow dried my hair, and left it frizzy, then proceeded to curl the ends with a flat iron. It was a horrible mess. We left it down, she didn't even put it up or anything, but they wanted to charge us $80 because it was their "prom styling". We ended up only paying $60, which was still wayyyyyy too much for what they had done. I went home, the curls had already fallen out and my 15 year old sister redid my whole hairstyle. There was nothing to salvage, we started from scratch. The curls that my sister had made stayed for 2 days, and would've stayed longer, had I not washed my hair. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Nikki! I moved to the Boston area in 1997 and jumped around with salons and stylists for years. I work in Arlington so tried places from Bedford to Cambridge. I even went to a fancy Newbury Street salon for a short bit. I never felt that the stylist or color worked for me, I just got whatever cut was trendy or they enjoyed doing. One day I spontaneously walked in to Nu Yu without an appointment and expressed my frustrations. Nikki sat me right down and we talked about what would work for my face shape, hair texture, etc. I will never have anyone other than Nikki cut my hair. Ever. I now wear my hair short and funky, but appropriate for my professional work environment. I am complemented all the time on my style and have had total strangers take photos of my hair! Now that I found Nikki, I feel beautiful and confident all the time. Long gone are the bad hair days, and I will never just throw my hair up in a ponytail again. I am there just about every 6 weeks to freshen my cut or color and think that the prices are fair and competitive with other salons of the same caliber in the area. I am so happy that I walked in, because I will never leave Nu Yu. read more
