ar [CEO's Name],
I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern regarding the recent experience my family and I had at one of your luxury resorts in Cancun, Mexico. Our long-awaited vacation turned into a nightmare due to the gross negligence and false advertising of the resort.
From the delayed check-in process to the inedible, lukewarm food, to the filthy room with dirty fingerprints, mold, and a non-functioning toilet, our experience only worsened as the days went on. We were coerced into filling out a liability release document to get a room upgrade and attend a presentation, but we had the foresight to only fill it out and not sign it, rendering it useless. We were finally switched to a slightly better room, but with a dirty, stained mattress that was unsanitary. The staff didn't seem to care about our well-being, and we only met the manager a day before we were scheduled to leave.
This experience is especially relevant during Black History Month, as historically, Black people have faced discrimination and mistreatment on vacation. We believe our experience may have been racially motivated, and we are disappointed that the hotel tried to coerce us into releasing liability. We urge hotels and resorts to prioritize their guests' safety and well-being above all else, and to ensure that their advertising promises and reviews accurately reflect the guest experience. No one should have to endure what we experienced during our stay at the resort.
Furthermore, companies that fail to adapt to changing social and political climates can face significant financial and reputational consequences. In addition, companies that engage in discriminatory or unethical practices can face legal action under state and federal laws. In Pennsylvania, for example, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations on the basis of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, age, disability, or use of a guide or support animal. Companies that violate these laws can face fines, penalties, and lawsuits.
Recent events have demonstrated the importance of corporate social responsibility and accountability. In 2018, Starbucks faced widespread criticism and boycotts after two black men were arrested at one of its Philadelphia locations for waiting for a friend without ordering anything. The incident sparked a national conversation about racial profiling and discrimination, and the company's handling of the situation was widely criticized. In the weeks following the incident, Starbucks' stock price dropped and the company announced it would close all of its U.S. stores for an afternoon of racial bias training.
In 2020, the hotel chain Motel 6 was ordered to pay $12 million to settle a lawsuit that alleged the company had violated the rights of Latino guests by sharing their personal information with federal immigration authorities. The company's reputation was damaged by the incident, and it faced significant backlash from customers and activists.
Most recently, the country music festival CMA Fest faced criticism and calls for boycotts after it was revealed that the festival's organizers had made a $250,000 donation to a Tennessee state senator who had sponsored anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The backlash was swift and widespread, with many fans and performers speaking out against the donation and the festival's perceived lack of inclusivity. The festival ultimately canceled its 2021 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it remains to be seen how the controversy will affect the festival's future.
We hope that our story serves as a wakeup call to your organization to re-evaluate your policies and practices and ensure that they align with the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We urge you to take swift and meaningful action to address the issues we faced and prevent them from happening to future guests.
Furthermore, we are seeking a refund for our stay, airfare, and transportation in the amount of $4,000. We believe that this is a fair and just resolution given the circumstances and the significant impact that the resort's poor quality and unethical practices had on our vacation. Our calculations include $2,500 for the hotel stay, $1,000 for airfare, and $500 for transportation.
We hope that you will take our concerns seriously and address the issues we faced with a sense of urgency. We value the reputation and quality of service that your company represents, and we believe that prompt action to address our concerns will demonstrate your commitment to customer satisfaction and corporate social responsibility.
