I came here to pick one up a few days ago and was advised instead to buy a 150W bulb because 300W would be too bright. Brought it home, installed it, and it didn't work. No big deal. So I came back to return it today - in the middle of my workday, because their hours are so restricted. In a normal store, you just switch out the defective bulb; quick and dirty. Not here - the clerk's aggressive line of questioning made clear he didn't trust me in the least. Clerk: How do you know the bulb doesn't work if you didn't open the package? Me: The package is open - see? You just didn't see where I tore it open. Clerk: Did you touch the bulb when you were installing it? Me: No, I wore gloves like you're supposed to do. [Clerk pulls out a massive magnifying glass to read the fine print on the back of the package.] Clerk: Aha! It says here, 'Do not install if the lamp is hot.' Was your lamp hot? Me: No. I was replacing a bulb that burned out days ago and the lamp hadn't been used. [Clerk walks to a shelf and picks up a utility light that uses a similar bulb. He spends several minutes opening it up but doesn't test the defective bulb in it. He pulls out the 500W bulb that was packaged with the utility light.] Clerk: Do you just want to take this bulb? Me: No, that's a 500W bulb and my light is a 300W light. Clerk (triumphantly): What? Then why'd you buy a 150W bulb? (Waves defective bulb in the air.) Me: Because when I bought it the guy here, at this hardware store, told me to buy it. I was following the advice of your staff. [Clerk glares at me.] So I said forget it, I just came here to replace a $5 bulb, not lose half my workday and get interrogated to boot. From now on I'm buying my hardware at Home Depot or Amazon. Say what you will about supporting the spunky little local stores - I can't deal with this again.

It peaked our interest and wouldn't you know it, there was an actual Farrow & Ball Paint Store 10 minutes from our apartment. I called on a Saturday late afternoon and spoke to Martin (Kesselman) explaining that we were interested in painting our house. Martin was able to steer us in the correct direction and made our vision come to life just by asking a few questions! With the distance between our project and Martin, there were many phone conversations, photos, and painting mistakes (I mixed the colours and made the bathroom look like a bandaid - not a good look!). Martin would set up times with us, and would want to see the progress and always asking for my thoughts and comments through the phases of the project. He was so patient responding to my frantic text and answering all my questions, and the why nots. Can't thank you enough for those calls! We now have a beautifully painted house (different colours in each room) that is warm and inviting (even with our shiny porcelain white floors). Here, the experts are always a stone's throw away and happy to help (if they're not already inundated helping others). As with most places, a pleasant demeanor and a kind word goes a long way. I am buying Benjamin Moore Aura because it is lower VOC than most, and still gets high ratings for quality. If you need more than one quart of paint, I recommend purchasing a gallon. From a cost perspective, the difference is small. When we purchase two quarts, we are either scraping the bottom of the can, or we cannot paint another wall that we decided to after painting the initial wall.
