The academic program here is so intense that even though I graduated somewhere around the bottom 1/3 of my class (I blame my ADHD and general teenage boredom), I was so well prepared that college was a total breeze by comparison. I was a student so long ago that I doubt any of the teachers I had are still here, but I found them to be mostly very supportive and of high quality. Some of them took a liking to me and were especially helpful. My suggestion to parents is to try and get your kid involved in other activities here besides just class. If they're not into sports, DHS has all kinds of clubs, youth groups, yearbook, newspaper, etc. Admissions people like seeing this stuff on your college application and it helps a lot with expanding your social circle.

Adding to that, there is at least 1 fight in 2 months. 2. DISGUSTING Boys bathrooms. The boys bathrooms are usually STICKY on the floor, and pee all over the seat. Occasionally, the boy's bathrooms get flooded. Once, I saw poop on the freaking toilet seat. 3. Ok, but this is a good one. There are a nice and friendly group of kids usually in the school. The third graders are nice, the fourth graders know what they're doing, and the fifth graders are amazing. I have good friends in all grades, and it is ok. 4. Lastly, strict teachers. Usually, teachers can be extremely flexible, including substitute teachers. But, there's some strict teachers that give out HARD discipline. If someone wishes to bid $10,000 for a personal parking space in the school parking lot, ( and no..I am not that person ), I would thank them for providing enriching programs for the students that they wouldn't otherwise have. If a child has behavioral issues, there are specialists who can address the problem. As a teacher, I definitely feel like I know what to examine when deciding upon a school. I visited a number of private schools, but when I toured St. Joseph, I felt such a great vibe & I just knew. I visited multiple classrooms in multiple grade levels. Students were engaged in learning in EVERY room in entered (speaking from experience, this is not something you can train kids to fake for a tour). Entering our 4th year at the school, it's everything I hoped it would be. There's such a sense of community at St. Joseph. The way younger students are paired up with an older buddy really developed a sense of belonging from the start. My kids are constantly learning, integrating technology in their learning, and most importantly happy! There are a million opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities & as a working parent, I love that before & after-school care is reasonably priced & available at the school. I really have nothing but great things to say about St. Joseph. If you're looking for a fabulous school with a great community feel, I highly recommend you visit and check it out for yourself!

The school goes from pre K-8th grade which is a great thing since the kids will be in one school until high school. It is a private school so it does cost quite a bit but it really is an exceptional school. Whether or not it's worth the money I can't really say. Personally, I would cringe at the price tag if Einstein himself were teaching my child. They just built a new building this year and it is amazing. So much better than the old building they were in. Lots of room and the capability to have more students, classes and teachers. Some pros: The facility is wonderful, the teachers are great and really care about the kids. Reading and math are based on ability, not on grade. So, if your 5-6 year old is reading like a nine-year old, they will be put in with those readers. The school isn't even "grade" based. there is no "1st grade", etc. It is level based. They have a GREAT fine arts program. Extensive art, music and drama programs that you won't find in a public school. Some cons: There is a bit of an elitist attitude there at times but I think it comes more from parents than the staff. There is a bit of communication problem with the school and the parents. There just doesn't seem to be a cohesive way for parents to get the information they need. If you're considering sending your child here, definitely sign up for a visit and a shadow day. Personally, as long as we can afford it, my son will be going to this school.

One of the things about SAA that makes it unique is that the fact that you will do as well as the work you put in. As long as you take advantage of the local resources and have some self motivation to do well, it isn't hard to master the schoolwork and beyond. The teachers are willing to help if you are willing to ask, even when it comes down to academics beyond the classroom. For example, when I needed help for my High School application, or improving my SAT scores, my teachers were glad to lend me a hand. Also, I have to give props to the excelled math program that SAA offers. Where I initially did not enjoy math as a subject at all, SAA motivated me to improve my math ability. I eventually became part of the Math Team and found a passion for mathematics. SAA was a great choice for me, and I got a lot out of my experience.

A teacher smelled my…read morehair in front of the entire class because she was "curious", a student drew a swastika on the bottom of her shoe my freshman year, and some of my classmates were called the N-word along with it being said on several other occasions. Many of the Muslim students were made fun of for their religious beliefs. I was told that my hair was "sassy" by a classmate by sophomore year, whatever that means. Dr. Allworth did absolutely nothing when she was informed about it and her only solution was to put up posters around the school reminding students not to say the N-word instead of just holding the students who were saying it accountable. If a student donates a lot of money to Regina and does anything wrong, they will never face the repercussions of their actions as the school does not want to risk losing their funding. Not to mention the fact that I was assumed to be there on scholarship on several occasions because they couldn't fathom the fact that I could afford to be there. A student told me that she would call her father who was a police officer on me because she felt like I was using my "black privilege". All in all, this is not a safe environment for students of color, and was an extremely traumatizing experience for me.

Safe Haven in Lake Bluff was a blessing for my child. He has high functioning autism, depression,…read moreanxiety, and executive functioning disorder. He is exceptionally intelligent and kind. The neighborhood school was not working for him. The teachers could not understand that he had difficulty in getting the information out of his brain and onto paper in the time allotted. He would be punished and ridiculed by the teachers! The bullying by his peers was relentless. I pulled him out in fourth grade. The district demanded he return. I said "Absolutely not!" After a lot of back and forth, they agreed to have him enrolled in Safe Haven. It was amazing! The class sizes were small. The teachers were very caring and attentive. His first social worker was so kind. (She eventually moved to a different school.) His second social worker was very nice, too. I watched my son finally get the help he needed to succeed. He attended Safe Haven from fifth grade through high school. He was allowed to take classes at our local high school, too. (Our high school had a very good psych case worker.) He participated on the sports, teams, too. The safety, emotional support, and nurturing helped my son achieve his potential. He graduated high school as an honor student at the local high school (meaning perfect 4.0 GPA), a National Honor Student, and an Illinois State Scholar, which means he was in the top 10% of all graduating high school seniors. He just graduated from a top rated University in May. I cannot thank Safe Haven enough for guiding and helping my son, when the local grade school district didn't care what happened to him. They like round pegs. If your child needs a small school that cares, check out Safe Haven in Lake Bluff. Remember: Illinois has a law that allows you to choose where your child can get the help they need, and your home district must pay for it.
