    Spices, Fishes, Rices!

The store name is an understatement! This little grocery is stuffed wall to wall with unusual and tasty treats. Pretty healthy stuff too. Make a habit of cooking Indian and you will loose weight and clean out your GI tract. Every square inch of every shelf of every aisle is packed with the most boggling variety of items I've ever seen. Probably all that's missing are goats. And maybe not. They could be behind the 25 lb bags of rice. The store clerk is very helpful at answering questions culinary and botanical. Want to know what a jackfruit is? Ask away. The only way they can stock more stuff is to suspend it from the ceiling with string. And now for fun, here are some alternate names for this store: "Just Everything" "Just Snacks, Not!" "All That and More" "Everything but goats"

Large variety but mostly bulk sizes!

Not Just Spices is the perfect place to pick up a few Indian ingredients, although it's too expensive to do all of your shopping here. That being said, most of the products are imported from India, so you are paying for the real deal! For some reason I was finding it next to impossible to find ground coriander at any grocery stores, even though I feel like it's a pretty basic spice! I ended up buying a container of garam masala for $5 and a bag of coriander for $4. They don't really have small sizes available so now I have 200g of coriander! The recipe I was making also called for cardamom pods, but those were $8-10 and I wasn't about to drop $20 on one recipe! It's super convenient that they stay open until 9pm, in case you need to come after work. Beware that there is a $10 credit card minimum! As the name implies, Not Just Spices also sells other things: a little bit of fresh produce and other Indian products like chips, frozen samosas, and even beauty products. It's so convenient to have a place to get these things right on Hope St.! And be sure to stop by the sister store, Not Just Snacks, across the street for Indian appetizers, curries, and desserts!

A few years back Not Just Spices seemed to be somewhat more expensive than other Indian/Pakistani markets in the area so my prior visits were infrequent. However, I recently visited and noticed that their pricing remains at circa year 2010 levels while nearby competitors have slowly inched up in price. My go-to items are now on par with competitors and my visits will consequently be more frequent. Possible areas of concern: -Narrow aisles, if you see someone come your way and it's crowded, don't be shocked if both of your butts kiss. -Limited refrigerator/freezer space and consequently less selection. -Tall shelves, some items may be out of immediate reach. -Very limited fresh items Positives: -Extremely helpful service -Fair pricing, especially compared to grocery store "ethnic" food aisle items -A somewhat fascinating random selection of ayurvedic health food and beauty items that I haven't seen elsewhere I like it here. But if your butt gets brushed against, try not to call the cops before you verify what's up. You might just be in need that organic import amla juice by the register. Just saying.

"Olive" you so much, Olive del Mondo!…read more I love coming here to restock my olive oils, discover fun vinaigrettes and shop for the cooks in my life. The shop attendant shares plenty of knowledge on all the products and the cooking you can do with them, while encouraging you to try anything that catches your eye and interest. No suggestion has ever left me disappointed. To be frank, there's truly no other place for high-quality oils and vinaigrettes that elevate your cooking. My favorite part of each visit is trying the infused oils with bread samples, sometimes to the point where I'm convinced I'll walk out with one of the giant dispensers and a whole loaf. I usually leave with the rosemary-infused and toasted sesame oils. They come in different sizes and are dispensed right there in 60, 200, 375 or 750 ml bottles. Aside from being incredibly knowledgeable, the shop attendant is very welcoming, patient and happy to answer any questions. I really appreciate how the bottles are always handled and packed with care, often gift-ready with plenty of tissue paper for padding. Parking can be tricky at times but it's absolutely worth the visit for your cooking essentials and pantry-inspired gifts. On top of excellent customer service, there's a reason Olive del Mondo is an 11/10 in my book.

The sandwich had turkey, cheese, bacon ( I picked off), greens, and a delicious aioli sauce. I suggested that my husband and I go in and try it a couple months later. It is located in the same plaza as Avenue N in Rumford. The storefront is made up of a glass "garage door" so it is pretty cool and unique inside. Service was prompt and friendly. Hubby tried the Cuban, he loved it, and I, creature of habit, stuck to my turkey panini. Once we ordered, the sandwiches came up faster than I expected. I had to use the bathroom and had to go next door to Avenue N. The owner or manager held the door for me, and was very friendly. Everyone that we have met there is friendly. Just a sandwich in regular size bread pressed as a panini, and it was $12!!! I had no idea until I had to sign for it! The special board didn't have a price and all the other sandwiches were around $8 so I thought it would be the same. Even worse, one bite in and I was disgusted. The chicken was not cooked well and had that rubbery texture where you have to really pull with your teeth to break it. I threw it away after 2 bites and I'm gagging thinking of it. This could be a one off, but I'm really bummed about wasting $12 on my one spend day of the week! I have some other little gripes that honestly bring down my old rating too. We bought some stuff from the shop, which is still really cute and offers a lot of local (though very upcharged) stuff. And when we checked out, there's a line for tip! Everyone feels weird leaving a tip line blank, so why is it there! Just to make us feel awkward?!? All they offer to drink is hot coffee or cold brew, everything else is a deli or store or serve yourself food so why even tipping! Just made me and my friend awkward leaving that line blank, made us feel rude but why would we tip for only buying grocery items.
