Do you enjoy dipping your feet into cold water on a hot summer day? Or how about swimming among giant redwood trees? If any of this sounds appealing you need to visit Sweet Creek Falls. We came in the middle of summer and it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon hiking, meditating, and swimming. There are 11 waterfalls ranging in size and close to 2.5 miles all together of shaded trails to explore, rustic bridges included. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Oregon last summer. Know before you go: Parking lots at each trailhead. Super stinky bathroom located only at Homestead Trailhead. Dog friendly. And most importantly FREE! *Don't be surprised to see topless women swimming. We all have breasts and it's a beautiful thing to be free especially in a place like this. If this bothers you just look away. *Don't use Yelp directions as they'll take you to the wrong place. Use Google instead. I've reported this several times but like nearly everything I report Yelp ignores it. And Happy Earth Day! If you haven't discovered what nature can do for your soul I highly recommend getting away from the daily grind, turning your phone off, and just enjoying what places like this can do for you. It's truly magical.

There are so many photo opportunities. Many different bridges along the trail allow you to walk over the water. There is a part of the trail where you have to walk through a small stream. I wasn't wearing the proper gear and didn't want wet shoes and socks, so we headed back at that point and headed towards the upper parking lot. The upper trail still had snow on the ground, and the parking area was pretty soggy. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. We would love to come back again during a drier season. Highly recommend!

After you pass the freeway bridge, the scenery changes from all green to the sandy ocean. The green scenery reminds me of Yosemite National Park in California, with the walkways and the picnic tables all around. We originally came here in search of starfish because we heard there's a ton of them here on the beach, especially in and around the tide pools. Unfortunately we didn't see any, but I enjoyed visiting overall. There were a ton of people climbing the rocks and fishing. When we noticed that the tide was slowly rising, it was time to get out of there. The water was freezing! Nice little state park. I hope to be back again soon and actually find some starfish next time!

Fogarty Creek is a hidden gem - parking is on the inland side of highway 101, and a nicely paved walkway takes visitors alongside the eponymous creek as it makes its way to the Pacific. Because it is physically separate from the main destination, the parking lot has signs warning visitors not to leave valuables in their vehicles. Perhaps good to know if you're daytripping and don't have the option of emptying your car before visiting. We encountered Fogarty Creek towards the end of the day, so we're very much looking forward to a future visit when we can explore further.

At the top of the hill is the Cape Perpetua Overlook day use area. It costs $5, and there's plenty of parking and a vault toilet. There's also a map of the trails by the pay station. The views from up there are amazing! The trails are well maintained. Don't forget to check out the cool West Shelter observation point! On the other side of highway 101 is a trail to Devils Churn, Cook's Chasm, and Spouting Horn. All must-sees! The dramatic views change depending on high and low tides. We always make a point to stop here while visiting the area, any time of year. It never disappoints. Highly recommend!

There's plenty of parking, including some for rvs. This portion of the trail, which starts at the back of parking lot, is a lollipop loop with well-maintained paths. The journey is a constant slight incline until about halfway through the loop. The forest here is just stunning...so serene especially within the loop itself. Highly recommend!

This park has the black rock bluff. From the parking area, the trail take you along the top of bluff. It will go through series of special bush plant cover cover tunnel. It is like a maze. Kid will love it. At the end tunnel open the shear cliff face of the rock. It is magnificent. The difference tone color cliff wall make this beautiful coastline. A few things you may want to know. The wind is strong there, if you wear contact lens, you may need to protect your eye with glasses. The top of the cliff can view many miles down the the coastline. There is mystery of the tunnel interconnected, so remember your way back. The trail may take you to other side of the entrance.

Great trail...loads to see and a real workout in the process…read more We arrived at the trailhead at 8am to be the first in the lot on a Saturday. By the time we returned the lot was full. There's a decent amount of parking...spots for cars, RVs, and trucks with boat trailers. The pre-trail wanders in and out of the trees and road for a bit, but they have great signage to lead you to the actual head. The trail is great, as you get a smidge of everything you could ask for along the way...some shaded forest, wildlife, wildflowers, stunning coastal views, and a pretty butt-kicking workout to the top viewpoint. Keep in mind, we aren't young, and neither are our hips and knees. There are a good number of high clearance steps to climb that weren't the easiest for a gal with short legs and bad hips. Not to mention that the trail is pretty steep as you zig-zag your way up the non-shaded knoll to the second viewpoint at the top of the lower trail (where it meets the upper). The trail is narrow most of the way, especially on that hillside as you push your way through the tall grasses and flowers. You definitely need to watch your step constantly going up and down, as there are hidden steps, rocks, and uneven surfaces beneath the grasses. We almost ended our trip at the lower viewpoint, but after a bit of contemplation decided to push through and up the hillside to the top. I'm super glad we made the choice, but we definitely felt it! So much to see along the way. We got to watch the elk herd as it grazed the knoll at the first opening, so beautiful. Halfway down the hill from the top a fast moving fog bank came off the coast right at us, engulfing us and removing everything from sight for a minute, while providing us with much appreciated and FABulous cold air... a very cool experience for sure. I highly recommend this trail. Go early if you go on the weekend. And if you're now young ONLY at heart, be prepared for a decent workout if you plan to go to the top...but do it, it's worth it. :)

The trek up was filled with streams and plants and at the very top a nice clear view of the beaches shorelines which seemed to have stretched on forever. Sh*t, I haven't experienced anything like this since living in New England (shoutout to NH, VT, and ME). But I digress. Dealing with folks takes a toll on me so I knew I wanted to grab a couple close friends and find a serene spot in a forest somewhere to recharge my batteries. Oregon delivered as usual. Alsea Falls Recreation Site (AFRS) is a picturesque area located 30 minutes southwest of Corvallis and boasts gorgeous forests of red cedars, maples, and Douglas firs as well as two waterfalls. I thought hiking trails here were pleasant. They offer plenty of shade and aren't very strenuous. Alsea Falls is located rather close to the day use parking lot, but there is a 1.4 mile trail leading to Green Peak Falls if you walk across the wooden bridge. The trail is poorly marked so you may lose it when you end up at McBee Park campground. Stick to the right and you will find two trails. Take the right official trail with the trail post. The left trail is shorter but there are stinging nettles along the way. Green Peak is the larger of the two falls and it is possible to climb to the top via the adjacent trail (right side), but it is steep so be careful. O T H E R I N F O -Day use parking is $3. Fill out an envelope. Drop off the envelope with payment in the receptacle across from the outhouse. Keep the stub in your vehicle. -Amenities within the campground include drinking water and vault toilets. Several campsites can accommodate large RVs or trailers; up to 32 feet long. -Dogs are allowed on a leash so bring the family pup along! -Salmon and steelhead fishing during the winter months. -The park is clean. Keep it that way and pack your trash until you find a rubbish bin. -Pack a camera. Take plenty of photos. Collect memories instead of things.

I'll do this review in two parts. First part is for the state park side. There is ample parking at…read morethe park entrance and the restrooms are right beside the parking. Very easy beach access. You can easily walk to the beach in about three minutes from the time you park until the time that you touch sand. For the campground. Wow - there are a TON of camping sites. They really packed them in here. Located at the front is the check-in desk, trash & recycling, and a welcome center. At the welcome center, the staff are incredibly friendly and they sell firewood and ice during their business hours. If you camp in the spots near the park entrance, you will be blown away...literally. The wind is super strong right off the ocean. You will get a view of the ocean but you might freeze in a tent. The other camping spots are locate back away from the road and won't have a view. We reserved a spot, all the way at the very east back end of the campground. This meant that we had a short drive in past all of the other campsites. The road is paved but is narrow and had many bumps and potholes. It might be a tight fit for big trucks and big rigs. The yurt that we stayed in definitely could fit 5 people comfortably. It came with a small table with two chairs, a bunch bed with a queen on bottom and twin/full on top, plus an additional queen futon. The mattress is VERY firm and you will need you own linens and bedding. Highly recommend bringing a comforter to put under your sheets because the bed stays very cold. There is only ONE outlet in the entire place and one cadet heater. There was mold growing on the interior of the fabric of the yurt itself. So, this is not ideal for those with allergies, immune compromised, etc. The spot did have electricity, a fire pit, a water spigot, and a picnic table. However, there was literally nothing separating us from the campsite right next to us and we literally shared each meal with the strangers next to us. Why there is not bushes in between the campgrounds is shocking to me. The campsites are so on top of one another that you can hear what your neighbors are saying at a whisper, verbatim. It is very heavily wooded inside and is quite dark most of the time. The sun will come through in spots throughout the day. There is also an animal issue here so you cannot leave your coolers out or the raccoons etc. will get inside of them. The restrooms were well stocked and plenty. There were also plenty of showers. The showers have low heads and will not be ideal for those over 5'9". Overall is a pretty nice place to camp, but I would want to book all of the sites around mine next time to have some semblance of peace and privacy. Great access to so many beach and activities. Less than 10 minutes away from Walmart and shopping in Newport.

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is just amazing. But I will admit that I am heavily biased in…read moremy opinion as I love Newport, Oregon and could easily see myself having a second home here. Perhaps even a primary home as well but I do like living in a large metro area because of the various services and entertainment options at your disposal. I have been to this Natural Area twice now and it's just so beautiful! The first time I really took advantage of taking pictures of the lighthouse here as well as the view. The second time was a repeat of that particular activity but in addition to that we went down to the tide pools and were immediately entranced with all of the aquatic life in those pools. We took pictures of that and were just so revitalized immersing ourselves in the nature there. I t was beautiful and simply amazing. Really nothing else needs to be said other than if you are touring along the Oregon Coast and are hitting the lighthouses this is a must stop... well they all are actually but this one really is. There is another lighthouse on the south end of town so Newport has scenic and at another time more practical advantage of having two lighthouses in the same town all within very close proximity. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is truly a beautiful place!

They direct all traffic through the visitor's center where you can ask the knowledgeable staff about anything and grab brochures and maps if needed. We went up to the lighthouse, down to cobble beach and the tide pools, and everywhere in between, it was so much fun. It was sunny and started raining after we arrived, it's fantastic either way. We were here close to low tide, so that helped improve our tide pool experience, but you can't go wrong fitting this into your schedule while on the coast!
