If I need flowers I head here. They for a while had a tiny little pug puppy, being a man I usually don't fall for such pathetic things, but this thing is cute, like definition of cute. Any way northern flower is a small shop front that hosts all manner of lovely green matter. At different times of the year they keep all varietys of plants from orchids to the very cool carnivorous plants including pitcher plants and monkey traps (they dangle down and have been known to catch monkeys in their huge pitcher mouths). The folk behind the counter (always one girl whenever I'm there) knows her stuff inside out and can advise you on an easy to care for birthday present, gift for the girlfriend all the way to more technical beasts such as the before mentioned. read more

This is a stunning little flower shop squeezed in between the Northern Bar and Rags to Bitches in the Northern Quarter. You can't miss it, it's overflowing outside with ferns, succulents, potted flowers and herbs, making the most of the limited pavement space outside the premises. Inside, the shop is packed full a beautiful selection of blooms, exotic plants and even champagne and wines. The owner (and the resident bulldog) are welcoming and extremely professional. The standard of flower-arranging is very high. The flowers don't come cheap in here, but it is without a doubt the best florist for miles. read more

Why on earth would you go to Marks and Spencers and get a generic bunch of flowers when you come to this place and have the delightful staff put a bouquet together for you that's going to be exactly what your other half will love? And for those of you who have been following the saga, you'll not be disappointed! Or at least, I hope you won't. I certainly wasn't. I'd requested a little bouquet that was easy to carry on a train, had an artsy feel to it with muted, simple colours and would be around £20. Literally, it was like they'd walked into my brain. What they presented me with was exactly what I'd imagined, only I couldn't explain it to them in floral terms. But they know exactly what they're doing. The friendliness I'd experienced on the phone carried through to my appearance at the shop. The lady in question was so chatty, warm and welcoming that I didn't really want to rush off to Manchester Piccadilly to catch my 10.30am train to Carmarthen, but it was well worth it. The flowers came with a cute little envelope containing a blank card, some info about the boutique and a sachet of flower food, clipped onto the arrangement with the cutest little wooden peg I've ever seen... it had a tiny little ladybug on it. Bless! For quality, a lovely atmosphere and something that little bit different, I'd recommend Northern Flower to just about anyone looking to say it with flowers. read more

Everyone could do with a houseplant. Even if you have several houseplants you know that you could really do with another houseplant; something with big glossy fan leaves or little tuberous spines or tiny, brightly-coloured flowers. The next time you fancy a houseplant I absolutely recommend you come to Northern Flower on Tib Street. I decided finally, just a few months ago, that I was going to pick up a houseplant and so I went to Northern Flower, a few doors down from Matt and Phred's Jazz Club. I don't really know a geranium from a spider plant so, honestly, I was expecting to be completely ripped off here but the server asked a lot of questions about my routine; how much I would be able to commit myself to looking after the plant? What was I looking for out of a plant? (there were some real adoption-style questions going on). In the end I was recommended a small green spiny thing that I like to call Spike (I can't remember his Latin name) which cost me a little under £10. I forget to water him most of the time but he seems to be doing okay. read more

The layout and tweeness is rather beautiful, it's definitely a flowershop with theme, which is rather nice, but it is teensy. It's rammed fairly full, with plants spilling out onto the street. The ladies in there (they may be chaps too, but I'm yet to meet them) are warm, welcoming and helpful, and they have other little things as well as flowers to help with whatever birthday, proposal or apology you're after. I love that they sell a lot of plants, I love having flowers in the house, but they wilt and die and if you go away for a week and forget about a bunch, you're in for a smell when you return, so things that live longer with colour and vibrance and a test to whether you can keep more than some cacti alive is always a good thing. However, having lots of plants, and a small shop, does mean that you're a little more limited with your flower choices, although still lovely. I like buying things in here, but it is a little more on pricey side of reasonable, so I think it's more "I would like to be bought things from here", if I'm honest! read more

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I popped in to pick up a last minute,'I almost forgot your birthday... but ta-dah! I didn't!' bunch a couple of weeks ago. My usual flower buying is a bit of a DIY job- buying a bunch from Tesco or M&S, spruced up with a few extra bits (a couple of nice roses or something from the Arndale) and the help of some pretty cellophane and ribbon from Paperchase. As I mentioned, it was a last minute dash so I enlisted Yelp help and found Northern Flower. So yes, the shop is beautiful and twee; yes, its conveniently located; yes, it feels like stepping into you grandma's shed but with those odd wooden bees on sticks (sorry, that stuff is lost on me boys and girls)... But I was very disappointed with the bunch of flowers I bought and that is the bottom line. I said I had around £15 to spend and gave the florist guidance on colours but to be fair, I didn't offer much more information than that. When she presented me her finished product, I was more than a little deflated. Like a previous reviewer mentioned (John L) there weren't enough flowers in there for me. I asked if she could take out a few of the green, twiggy bits (technical speak) and spruce it up with some more flowers. She did as I asked (all with a smile it must be said!) but it still looked pretty dull and I didn't have the time to ask for her to change it again. I was then stunned that this very small bouquet was a whole £16! It really didn't have the wow factor I expected. I wasn't offered a card (some other reviewers were, maybe this was just an oversight). Maybe she needed more information from me, maybe you need to spend +£20 for a nice bouquet... maybe I'm making excuses because I really wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, it looks like my amateur flower arranging skills might have to be called upon again... That is, unless someone wows me with a beautiful bouquet from here... Any takers? read more

This shop looks like it has been picked up bricks and all from a quaint picturesque village full of chocolate box houses, I can't believe someone has planted such a beautiful vision smack bang in the middle of the Northern Quarter, and adds the only missing dimension (as it has everything else anyone needs living in the city!) I went in and bought a treat for a special friend, I asked for a £20 bunch of white and green blooms... the staff surpassed themselves and handed me something that looked far more expensive! This flower shop is the only place you need to keep in mind for special occasions if you are a city dweller or worker! read more

This is my favourite florist. It not only looks the part but the flowers are beautiful and the staff go out of their way to give tips and advice. I called in on Saturday when I noticed a plant pot in the window. I bought it, along with a hyacinth in an ornate metal pot. Flowers and plants are displayed outside the shop on old wooden crates and inside, in addition to the plants, they stock decorative items and gifts. They may be a tad on the pricey side but it's definitely worth the extra. The displays really are beautiful. read more

If you need a little haven of green in the grey brick of Manchester, this is your place. The plants and herbs lining the pavement invite you in and you dive into a rainforest haven where the staff even burn scented candle to add to the experience! They are extrememely helpful and offer a completely personalised service that makes other businesses hang their heads in shame. I bought a rosemary plant to decorate my kitchen window (and for tasty additions to my cooking, of course) and it only set me back £5- far better than any florist or supermarket chain. read more

We ordered a £39.00 bunch of flowers for my mums birthday.... A big disappoint!!!!!! We were recommend this florist by someone... We normally use another well known high street florist.. When the flowers arrived on the morning of my mums birthday I was very shocked to see how small the bouquet was, on the next working day i rang the shop to advise I was bringing them back I was told this was fine... When I went to the shop to return them the manager said you didn't pay £39.00 for these they are £25....that just summed up what a rip off the shop was, we then had to produce the debit card receipt proving we paid £39... I'm my opinion stay away you can get what they sell from your local supermarket for a fraction of the price... The manager was v rude... Later that day we received a small box of chocolates as a consolation!!! read more

I needed a bunch of lillies for my mum so I popped into Northernflower as I knew they always stocked them as they do appear to supply a lot of the local bars and restaurants in the N4 with nice flowers, including lillies. I have to say that my expectations were exceeded. Not only did I get the lillies, which were tremendous, the very friendly staff made me feel extremely welcome and put together what I would call a stunning bouquet of flowers; I'm not too sure about the names of flowers but in there were long stem lillies with huge heads amongst other sweet smelling florals and stratigically placed foliage, all professionally tied together in water so it remained intact by the time I presented it to my mother. It's fair to say that she was blown away and the gift from me remained an impressive centre piece on her dining table in her favourite vase for the next two weeks, subsequently giving me the title No.1 son, envy of other siblings hehe ;-) It's a no brainer that for the cost of a mear £40, the smile on my mum's face was priceless!! Desperately looking for flowers to make my own bouquet the day before my wedding, I remembered this place (hadn't lived in Manchester for years) and they were amazing! I'd picked out some flowers, having mentioned it was for my wedding, and was about to head off and wrestle with my floral tape when the lovely lady offered to do them up for me. I was wary, as the word wedding seems to triple the price of anything, but she did them up and even put a gorgeous bow on them.
