But happily Robie's Flowers has managed to carve out a little customer base without treading on too many daffodils. It is a 'bespoke' florist and you can see the difference as soon as you walk in - they sell a lot of exotic flowers, orchids, things like that. Up to as many as 50 different types of flowers, most imported from Holland this is where to go for something a bit different. The shop itself, never mind the beautiful flowers that provide handy decoration, is sophisticated in its own way despite the traditional tudor style black and white exterior. I for one think it a good thing that owner Robie Flood stole his gem of a florists away from Middleton and brought it to (more enlightened?) Prestwich.

For most of the time I lived in my Prestwich family home there were flowers on our walnut dining room table or the matching walnut sideboard. And most of these came from Crosbie's. They do crazy, expensive bouquets here but that's not what we came for. We came for beautiful, simple bunches that wouldn't break the bank yet would brighten up the scene in our house. The staff here are lovely and helpful. They know when to advise and when to just sit back and let you go round the whole shop three times before deciding on the prettiest.

The exterior is so inviting with topiary plants framing an almost Parisian green entrance. The lady who greeted me knew exactly what I wanted. Hardly a flower buff, I requested an unusual exotic arrangement and I was shown the most incredible array of worldwide flowers. Service was quick and the flowers were so beautiful that I wanted to keep them for myself. The choice of flowers is extensive, curious, unusual and alluring. The bouquet was reasonably priced at £40 and it was made to look extra special. This is designer floristry at high street prices and Flower Style is a keepsake for my blackberry.

It's not a huge unit, but it's neatly laid out and rather than trying to sell a bit of everything, they've got a nicely curated selection of items. In the window and along the left hand wall are a huge array of succulents and air plants plus various options for planting them - pots, vases and hanging mounts. The table in the centre hosts various ornaments and trinkets, and the right hand wall features various gifts including a section dedicated to children. Also, we now have a place in Prestwich for picking up the latest copy of Monocle! Perhaps the nicest part of it all is that everything is very reasonably priced. The rear of the store is a coffee shop - family friendly with a large wall covered in chalk board paint so that the kids can entertain themselves. I've not had chance to try it out myself yet, but plan to do so very soon.
