I'm not setting up home with an elf. I'm not planning a vacation in Narnia- I don't need bricka brack, I don't need keepsakes, I don't need fecking chintz- that's why it's called chintz, if it was any use to me it would be called 'the essentials'!! The NQ has sold us a hippy dream that can never be. Being a boho mash head who sits in coffee shops talking about Neil Young, collects dolls and Japanese backpacks and is generally too arty to care about 'the system maaan' is an expensive past time so either these fakers are secretely high flying lawyers or daddy is a patient and giving man because the good ol' NQ is one of the most expensive and business minded monsters in Manchester! Until I checked out their website, I had no idea that Thunderegg was a shrine to all things Japanese.. but now it all makes sense. It is a cute little shop in the Northern Quarter selling clothes (Cutie, Gorgeous - brands like that- yes please), vinyl toys, plastic headbands and jewellery. The till area and near the fitting rooms are like if a harajuku girl started up her own branch of Accessorize. They sell Hello Kitty, Paul Frank, Emily Strange and the clothes aren't even that expensive - I tried on a spotty grey/ purple dress for £18. There was a fair amount of the old leopard print and plenty of sequins and sparkle for autumn parties ahead. Also towards the back I found a Herve Leger style bandage dress with an exposed zip. Ok, fair enough all the 'slebs were wearing those six months ago but I think in Normal-Time that's still a good buy. read more

Situated in the Northern Quarter this place is a very cool shop in a very cool location. The shop is really quirky and retro, a great place to find all sorts of bits and bobs. You will find handbags, clothes, gifts and jewellery here. The upside: great sop with really friendly staff. The downside: a little on the expensive side. After you have splashed your cash you can come out and find lots of trendy cafes nearby where you can show of your loot. read more

Thunderegg has an unusual name and a lot of unusual items stocked to match. Think the brightest, patterned item and then times that by thousands, you'll get Thunderegg on the brain. That's two floors of lots of little gifts, clothes, purses, keyrings, bags, just things that don't do much but are quirky and patterned. Russian dolls even. There's some Paul Frank and that monkey lying around and some Hello Kitty items. I personally wouldn't buy anything from here because it's a bit too much for me. It's really expensive for what it is. I saw one purse which I've been eyeing up in Urban Outfitters but hesitating to purchase. On enquiry here, £25. It's a purse not a handbag and it's not that special. It's definitely worth a nosy as you probably could get some really cool gifts from Thunderegg. read more

Well, it can't hurt to look in Thunder Egg when there's a sale on, can it? Good lord. I had no idea half of this stuff even existed! Tape measures in the shape of cats? Moomin toys as far as the eye can see? Bags with a "tea and toast" design on them? All this is sandwiched between dotty spotty frilly dresses and random accessories. Thunder Egg is very much the kind of store that you'll visit and come away with vast amounts of what generally are unnecessaries... but suddenly they seem very necessary. There's the odd gadget here, a cute diary there... it's utterly perfect for gifts as unique and individual as the recipient. Definitely worth a visit, and completely typical of the Northern Quarter. read more

Thunder egg is my favourite shop. I'd simply end the review there if i could, but i dont think yelp will allow it. So i shall elaborate. so what do they sell.... 'We sell womenswear ranging from vintage inspired 50's frocks,1940s style tea dresses, printed oversized T-Shirts to hundreds of dresses from current and quirky labels such as Sugarhill Boutique, Trollied Dolly, Glamorous, Shikha London, Alice takes a trip,lazy oaf, and many many more!' ....some of the more are the cutest and most beautiful of homeware, accessories and other gifts. Thunder egg had a shop in Afflecks palace in the city centre and another in the 'trendy' (for want of a better word) suburb of west Didsbury many years ago. I still own a skirt i bought from their west didsbury store 12 years ago and i still love it. Although still to be found in Afflecks Palace, the main store is now in the fantastic Northern Quarter area of manchester city centre on Oldham Street, its perfectly placed for all you lovely yelpers to drop by. The store is set out over 2 floors so there are plenty of clothes to choose from. I can go into thunder egg and know 100% that i can find something that suits me and is me... and all for a good price. They get it right every time, picking the best of items from a variety of clothing companies. From chic to mad and vibrant they cater for many tastes and for both the young and old. In fact Thunderegg is my go to place for most presents i buy... from my 17 year old sister to my 80 year old gran. i know i'll find something they'l like (probably more for the ladies than the gents, but its not my place to categorise). i hate shopping. Whilst I love owning, i hate the act of shopping. More often than not, i simply park in the Northern quarter car parks, walk round the corner to thunderegg, spend £100 (on a number ot items as its great value for money) and head home.... completely satisfied. No madness of market street or the high street stores. Phew The staff are welcoming, friendly and wonderful people. With all that said...there is a down side though....i still dont have a loyalty card :( read more

I'd been putting off going into this shop until a friend of mine came to visit yesterday, as it's not the kind of place you'd take your straight, male, other half. Thunder Egg is filled with hundreds of gorgeously girly treats, from shiny handbags and purses, beautifully illustrated birthday cards and cool clothing, to vintage style photo frames, cute costume jewellery and chintzy home ware. You could easily spend a fortune here as it's one of those shops that leaves you believing you absolutely, positively HAVE to have that polkadot nail file or that coaster that says 'P*** OFF' on it, so I'd suggest leaving your credit card at home if you own one. Despite visiting this shop only a matter of hours ago, I'm already extremely eager to go back. Oh, and I discovered they stock official Moomin products (I love the Moomins)! Arrrrrrrgh! I feel a serious obsession coming on... HELP!!! read more

Bit bloody brilliant this shop. I can;t believe I have never actually walked through it's doors before now. and it was only because there was an awesome penguin jumper in the window I had to have that I did. Anyway, the shop sells quirky clothes for ladies, like the kind you would find on Tib St Fashion Market. Also sells accessories to the maximum displayed all over the show and in cute little cabinets. Very well displayed for viewing but not so much trying on and feeling. There is a downstairs but I don;t know what's there or if it is ever open. The prices are ridiculously cheap. Either that or I have been shopping in the wrong places. You can get some amaze dresses for as little as £15 (not even on sale) and the jumper i bought was only £20!! I love this place. I might be a guy in a shop full of really quite feminine items, but this is fine with me. Wonderful items, and they stock Moomin items which is great for my wife as she loves them! Prices are fairly high, but it isn't a high street shop. They're a small shop that provides unique and quirky items. Love it! read more

I usually have an alright experience in Thunderegg. I certainly love their products and it's always my go-to place to get one of a kind gifts. Today must have been an off day for the staff. I went in to return something that, while not necessarily faulty, was very badly made. Because the item didn't cost much, the manager's response was "you get what you pay for" and I was begrudgingly given a credit note (only good for 1 month even over the holidays?!) while the other sales person whistled (not annoying in the slightest). It's a shame when a great shop gets ruined by poor customer service. :( read more

My parents compliment me each year on the quirky presents I end up getting for my sister. "You always seem to know what to get her," they say. It is all thanks to Northern Quarter boutique Thunder Egg. I walk round around Manchester trying to find somewhere to pick up the perfect, individual little gift and invariably I end up back here. Cool badges with robots on them; plastic jewellery in the shape of fast food items; cloth bags with nautical tattoo designs on them - it is a hive of awesome, mainly japanese-themed, kitsch that my sister provides an excuse for me to buy. None of it is particularly cheap but then most of this is the sort of stuff that you won't find in any other shop in Manchester. Most of stuff on offer at Thunder Egg is aimed at the nice-smelling, dress-wearing half of the population but, in the basement they also sell a selection of cool limited men's t-shirts and sweaters from hard-to-find-brands like Lazy Oaf and Terratag. I bought one from there that made it look like my shirt was being ripped by a bright green monster hand. It got lost in the wash; very upsetting. read more

Wander idly past the uniquely named 'Thunder Egg Noodle', and you might be forgiven for thinking that it's yet another one of these places which sells a wide range of overpriced kitschy tat. And to an extent, you would be right. But be warned - it's very difficult to walk through the doors of this delightfully quirky little independent boutique and leave empty handed. Thunder Egg Noodle specialises in the unique - both in terms of the objects it stocks and the clothing ranges you'll find instore. Take a browse through its racks and you'll find clothing for ladies and gents alike from some of the best independent clothing lines around, including the mighty 'Get Cutie'. It's not really the place to go if you're looking for something on a budget, but if you're prepared to spend that little bit extra, you're sure to leave with a delightful -and truly one of a kind - little trinket. And whilst it can get incredibly busy at weekends, its staff are always certain to take the time to help you find something to fit your individual tastes. You can't help but be drawn into this shop. The bright colours and Japanese inspired trinkets make it hard to resist. Thunder Egg is a great place for gifts, whether you're looking for stocking fillers or something a bit bigger. I can't think of another shop quite like it. Accessories from independent designers sit alongside novelty ornaments, kitsch toys and unusual objects for your home. I went in on Saturday and was dazzled by novelty jewellery, hot water bottles, cup cake badges and other odds and ends. The Moomins seem to be very popular at the moment. Situated on Oldham Street it's a great place for browsing, with so much to look at. Take plenty of cash as something's bound to catch your eye. read more

Thunder Egg is a shop where you can buy unusual and quirky items such as handmade clothes, jewellery and cards. The difference with Thunder Egg though is that all their products are high quality, well thought out and very trendy. It is quite expensive but you can buy the most beautiful jewellery there. Also they have random products like cameras and they have a 'boys' section downstairs. Some of the stuff they have is really a pointless gizmo that has no use at all but it will probably be so unusual you will have to have it!! The staff are friendly but the only downside is the price, if they brought down the price, especially on the clothes I think tthe shop would be more popular. read more

Thunderegg is a cute little Northern Quarter boutique selling a range of chintzy ladies wear, accessories, gift items, badges and general silly-things you didn't realise you wanted but HAVE to have. Its a bit of an Aladdin's cave of treats and wonders, and is a really great stop for girly gifts and novelty items. I popped by earlier having seen a really lovely dress in there a few weeks ago, and noting a 'sale' sign it seemed the perfect time to bag the swag. Unfortunately I experienced some really really shoddy customer service (which I've experienced a couple of times now) which put me off the dress and ever visiting the store again. Thunderegg has some really lovely items, but to be honest you can find them elsewhere in the Northern Quarter for a similar price and with better service. I've worked service jobs most of my life and know the difference between a one-off hard day sneer and a general bad attitude. read more

Pink and vivid, with a window chock-full of cool rockabilly-esque dresses and Hello Kitty accessories, Thunderegg is like a little corner of Tokyo's super kawaii (cute) Harajuku district right in our very own Northern Quarter. This is one of those shops that might not appeal at first ("erm, no ta, I'm OK for Pucca merchandise, thanks...") but if you look a little deeper, you'll find a wealth of awesome clothes and great gifts. Although there's a good selection of men's t-shirts from names such as Paul Frank and the relatively new, manga-flavoured Terratag, Thunderegg is mainly a girl's domain, with its plethora of all things Hello Kitty and a huge accessory and jewellery section that ranges from vintagey owl pendants to kitsch pin-up motifs and includes items by off-beat jewellery designer Tarina Tarantino. The girls' clothing is great, too. Although a lot of the Thunderegg range might seem aimed at the youngsters who frequent Affleck's, there is some pretty, grown-up stuff to be had, namely from independent London label Ruby Rocks, which offers a range of beautifully cut dresses in quirky prints. A tip for the busty, curvaceous ladies; the Ruby Rocks 'martini' dress is fantastic. It hugs and skims and flatters like no other dress. Perhaps not cheap at £45, but it's very well made and will earn a special place in your heart and your wardrobe. Mine, in leopard print, is my go-to dress for when I want to feel like a knockout, and the Russian doll print version will be hanging in my wardrobe soon. Other than Ruby Rocks, Thunderegg have an adorable owl t-shirt dress in stock right now. It will make you look and feel like an overgrown child but that's half the fun, right? Thunderegg is not the cheapest shop in town, or the best, but they gain great kudos for stocking lesser known labels in a shopper-friendly environment. This is one of those shops that you have a browse around every now and then, and most of the time you come away empty handed, but sometimes you find something you just *have* to have. read more

There's a few shops in Manchester that specialise in kitch tatt but this one stocks some actually quite well made tatt and some lovely novelty items too. The clothing's quirky, fun and great for festivals or beach holidays as there's lots of bright, bold prints. The men's section downstairs isn't so good unfortunately. There's lots of cabinets full of charm necklaces, sparkly girlie bobby bins and trinkets. I tend to head here for cheaper gifts to post out to friends abroad as you wont be heartbroken if it doesnt make it. There's a good range of Paul Frank items, particularly bags and wallets. read more

What a fantastic shop! This shop is purely brilliant! It is full of some of the coolest stuff I have seen since the last time I went to Camden Market in London! Handbags by Chuppa Chups lollipops, David Bowie merchandise, Bags in the shape of Old School boom boxes, the list is endless! They sell Bobby pin ranges of handbags, Hello Kitty merch, beatles merchandise and so much more! I only really discovered the full coolness of this shop recently when I had plenty of time to look around. Although the store is only small, it has a downstairs which houses a wicked range of clothing such as hoodies, t shirts and much more! Some things are a little bit pricey, but in my opinion well worth it! Go in and look for yourself, this place gets a definite five stars from me!! Highly recommended!! read more

Thunder Egg is a great independent shop which sells a range of quirky and wonderful objects. It is a brilliant place to buy gifts for teenagers, and it also stocks a range of clothes. The staff in here are friendly, and the atmosphere is chilled. I like buying clothes from here in the sale as there are real bargains to be had. The clothes are well made with quality material and they sport some funky images. Most things in here are in the mid price range, not cheap and not expensive, but there are also smaller gifts for under a fiver. Oooh, I almost forgot that they do great handbags too! read more

Situated in the Northern Quarter the shop sells all the things you would expect from such a location. A great place for gifts if you know someone who likes the quirky and retro things in life. The shops stocks all sorts of things - clothing, handbags, quirky ornaments and keepsakes. A really nice shop to browse around with a real feast for the eyes. Well worth popping in. I've bought a few cute little stocking filler type pressies from here, there's a great range so you'll likely to find something you'll like. The clothes are quite gorgeous, unusual brands like Numph and Get Cutie which ( to my knowledge, at least) you can't find elsewhere in Manchester. The clothes are lovely to look at but really quite expensive, you probably wouldn't buy clothes here on a whim. Having said that, they are nice and individual, and i get lots of compliments on a coat i once bought here and have never seen anyone else in it. read more
