I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a good friend of mine got me hooked on their mail order coffee. The coffee is rich and smooth! My favorite so far is the Spoonbender coffee, but they're all delicious! Another friend of mine and I decided to take a week long road trip headed north. We decided to spend the night in Mount Shasta, and that's when I realized this is where my favorite coffee comes from! The next morning we decided to visit their small shop on Berry Street, and what great people they were! Both Keith and Jen were the nicest people and very knowledgeable!! The gal running the roasting machine was also very sweet and so was the gentleman who came out to greet me! Having this experience of actually visiting there and meeting the wonderful people who roast the beans and package up my favorite coffee was so worth it!! Stop in if you can!! I was looking for a coffee shop in the Shasta area when Northbound popped up on Yelp. After reading the reviews, I realized it's not a coffee shop but rather solely a roaster. My wife and I decided to check it out as it was a short walk from where we were charging our car. The people were sooo friendly and described their different roasts. We decided to pick up a few to take home to San Diego. We've brewed one bag so far and it's soo good. We'll definitely get more in the future. read more

Discovered this coffee at Market Hall in Rockridge in Oakland. Have been getting it ever since. Big fan of the Mainline Blend - hits all the right notes for me - medium but does not taste burnt, so you can still actually taste the cofffee. The Fall Tour blend has been awesome as well. And they have Sumatra that's actually NOT a dark roast, so I've finally gotten to try a Sumatra that doesn't taste like an ashtray. These guys know what they're doing. read more

Wow ! Best customer service possible. Important: this is not a coffee shop . They are a roaster and do not sell coffee drinks. We are on a road trip. After 500 miles today in a large RV , we are hot , sweaty and exhausted. We pulled off to get iced coffee and dropped in , mistaking it for a cafe. Feeling dejected, I returned to Yelp, only to find that every coffee shop in town was closed. The owner of the roaster came out and said if we had our own ice , we could have some of their cold brew for free. Yes, please ! I have never met friendlier and more generous business owners . We bought a bag of coffee and they ground it for us, even after being our volunteer baristas. Supporting local and small business is really important to me. They have made customers for life! I found this coffee quite by accident, however I will quite intentionally continue to order their roasts forevermore. Spoonbender and Prana are current favs of mine, so I try to order in 2 pound increments. Occasionally I order their seasonal coffees (happy camper is really great). What I love about this company and the service: I order on a Friday and generally have my coffee between Monday and Tuesday. Coffee is roasted either the day I order or within a a day of ordering and it is always wonderful. Coffee is never old roast, bitter or awful. Fun personal touches, They at times drop in fun stickers with the shipment of my coffee, which end up on my laptop or refrigerator, or someplace others can see and ask me about. What I don't love: I've got nothing bad to say about this amazing company I am always telling people who love coffee to check out their website and try a pound they won't be disappointed. Whenever I'm in the Mount Shasta area, I pick up a bag of beans from this quality local roaster. Highest quality fresh coffee beans roasted on site using classic vintage Probat roaster. Northbound roasts a range of single origin beans and blends from lighter to darker roasts. I have to give them credit for their Happy Camper blend being one of the most tasteful dark roast coffees I've ever had. I recently went into their roastery and bought a bag of their beans. Friendly service. Rock bottom prices compared to trendy big city roasters. FYI, this is not a cafe. You buy the beans and brew them at home. read more

Fresno just got hooked up with this ridiculously good coffee! I was in Whole Foods and noticed they had a new "local" coffee available. Gave the dark roast a try and O.M.G.! This coffee is better than anything from the City! We like dark roasted espresso...I know, I know it's not what enthusiasts recommend...but we do latte's so we want the coffee to stand out. 4/22/19 Just made my 1st purchase with Northbound Coffee Roasters. Before purchasing, I had occasion to contact them several times, regarding Fair Trade, travel times, etc. Responses were clear and immediate and helpful. The Fair Trade yirgacheffe coffee arrived within 2 days of roasting, which let me bleed off the carbon dioxide timely; and also let me get a cup brewed when the coffee was most flavorful. And it was delicious. Price is competitive and shipping is the standard rate for roasters. I give Northbound 6 stars out of 5. Ty. read more

There are a plethora of artisan coffee roasters in the country these days, which is a great thing. Yet, not all of them are worth the time to write a review.... and order direct from them wherever I am in the country (I split my time between Oregon and Southern California). I gotta say, Northbound does a GREAT job. The Lamplighter, a MokaJava blend is fantastic! A perfect balance with light bright acidity and enough depth from the Java to give it enough weight. I just had there Happy Camper coffee and it was delicious. I usually don't like black coffee because it's to bitter, I have to have lots of sugar or a fu fu coffee.
