Inmate Accounts was my final straw after speaking with a counselor who had the reasoning skills of a five-year-old. If this is what they call rehabilitation, it's a complete joke. Too many COs come across as cold, heartless, and completely unfit for the responsibility they were given. They represent the lowest standard of law enforcement. If you have a loved one in this system, stay involved. Call. Ask questions. Make sure they know someone on the outside cares about them and is paying attention. There's a reason this jail has a revolving door, and the people running it should be ashamed of themselves.

So many times they would call me saying how hungry they were because dinner was at 4:30 and it wasn't enough. I would hear about how COs would literally yell & punish inmates even if what the inmate did was an accident. They were out on meds that they told the jail don't help them. Visiting was terrible! I do not care what you might think about me, but when I come in and say hello, the proper way to address someone is to say hello back. The COs that I interacted with either were very rude & I guess they just don't know how to talk to people. While other male COs would make inappropriate & scary jokes that honestly made me wonder why they weren't locked up. (Literally had one tell me he could pin me to the ground if he wanted to). Being an outside walking in, everything was gross! The walls were chipping & the floors were nasty. Contacting your loved one inside is a joke! I was so confused because putting money on a tablet was different from commissary, & used two completely different apps. My messages would take literally anywhere between 5-10 days even though I was using a texting app. Hoping other inmates that are in there share their experiences when they get out. I would add more but it would be a book.

This facility is very poorly administrated. It provides NO rehabilitative counseling or help to…read moreinmates. The system is a private company and any communication with an inmate has a fee. A friend or family member must register for phone or messages so the inmate can message or call and they can only message or phone at a phone call or message cost that the friend or family member must have an account they pay for. To put any funds in the inmates account there is a costly fee. Put $15 into the inmates account "trust fund" and you pay a $5 fee just to put in funds. The social services are a joke. If an inmate requires placement in a recovery or halfway house the inmate must contact and find a placement and they cannot make any phone calls or email or even search. The social worker does not advocate or do the searching- if an inmate can get a s w appointment the s w will place a call on their phone but the inmate has to do the search and connecting. Medical or dental help is limited and sporadic. If an inmate has any funds in their trust fund the medical unit charges $5 for aspirin and $5 to see the prison Doctor or dentist, This is a money making business. It is NOT there to help any inmate recover from anything. Investigations should be conducted. No wonder inmates return, they get released with no help or rehabilitative assistance. This system is a blight on our prison system and has no compassion.

Most of the hotels I've stayed in pretty much expect tips and the food is always a bit overpriced- not at Rikers. You can pay extra for "commissary" which is basically junk food and extra toiletries. 2. My vacation started at 100 centre street after two gentlemen and the court system as a whole, decided I should quit my gainful-tax paying lifestyle and spend a few years in the care of the correction institution of NY. Apparently, using prescription medication without a prescription warrants this. I was chained to another fine vacationer and we were swiftly taken by bus to Rike's. I give the bus experience 4 stars for value (it was free) but 1 star for the unfriendly staff. 3. Surprisingly great water pressure and shower temperature. 4. Very roomy and yet cosy cots. 5. The bread (served at every meal time) must be some type of local artisanal or ethnically appropriate recipe because it's unlike most store bought bread or any I've tasted previously. 6. The rest of the food is normal pseudo-American fair, pasta, beans and rice, etc. nothing to write about really. 7. Book selection for reading is average and I got a lot of reading done. 8. They have card games and chess/checkers, dominos etc for entertaining times with your new found friends. 9. Staff. The staff need retraining in customer service based duties. Especially the white shirted "captains". Not sure what they believe to be a captain of...but it sure isn't making the customers feel welcome. They often curse wear frowny faced scowls....it just generally seems like they don't want to work there. Every now and then (if your lucky) you'll get to see a Broadway type performance art piece featuring a neo-modern take on the classic Ninja Turtles. They come out yelling and cursing and telling everyone to lay face down on the floor....oh boy it's exciting!!! They prefer Donatellos character though using the culturally appropriate Bo or long stick type weapon. As a side note, I'd really like to see more variety in the characters played and such different weapons. All in all if a cultural diverse, but gender specific, lots of free time vacation is your thing (and by that I mean non-Anglo Caucasian) I'd say you'll love it.

Your locked up 23 hours a day and for the hour you do get, you spend it on the unit because they always give the excuse that they don't have enough staff to take you outside..... I became suicidal because of it all and u definitely don't recommend anyone to go there at all , so please stay home out of trouble and whatever you do try not to get yourself locked up !!!!!'n

Not once during my stay did I fear for the virginity of my anus. Were talking two gyms, contact visits, cable T.V's in every cell and a sweet ass commissary. I'm not even kidding when I say you could get a big bag of potato chips for $2.00! Many of the cells offer beautiful views of the surrounding scenic country side, which is famous for it's horse farms. Don't get your hopes up though as these premium cells are in high demand and there is usually a waiting list. Nothing is perfect I guess.. up until recently we were able to smoke cigarettes and crack the windows open. As far as food, meh, I have experienced better. However, the head chef Darin really made magic with what he had to work with. I really hope he is still there because he did a really great job serving up the food. If I know Darin, he might just still be. The Darin I knew never did like paying his child support. Oh, I almost forgot! During my stay the commissary was selling muscle shirts with a cartoon rendering of a prisoner being held down by a ball and chain. These were not only hilarious but they are sure to make really great gifts and souvenirs as well!!

An Incredible Halloween Experience in One of the Coolest Historic Locations!…read more We visited Eastern State Penitentiary for its Halloween Horror Nights event, and we had an absolute BLAST! This place is already fascinating because of its history and the atmosphere of the old penitentiary, but experiencing it during a Halloween event takes things to a whole new level. The setting alone makes this such a cool place to visit. There's something about exploring a historic prison after dark that creates the perfect atmosphere for a haunted attraction. Add in the Halloween decorations, incredible actors, and immersive experiences, and you have the recipe for a fantastic night! The event featured five well-themed haunted mazes, and we were thoroughly impressed. The haunt actors were incredible, bringing so much energy and commitment to their performances. We also loved the Touch Pass option, which lets guests opt for a more intense, hands-on experience. It's a great addition for those who want to take things up a notch and get even more immersed in the scares! There were tons of great photo opportunities throughout the grounds, so you'll definitely want to take your time exploring and grabbing some pictures. We appreciated the variety of food trucks available, too, which made it easy to grab something to eat while enjoying the event. The absolute highlight for us, though, was the Speakeasy experience inside Al Capone's cell! We paid a little extra for this experience, and we HIGHLY recommend doing the same if you visit. The singers and actors were phenomenal! One of my personal favourites was an amazingly talented woman who sang opera beautifully. Her voice was absolutely incredible, and it was such an unexpected highlight of the evening. I also loved the woman who performed a lovely rendition of Barracuda. Both performances really stood out and made the experience feel like so much more than just another Halloween attraction. You even get a complimentary drink included with the Speakeasy experience, and the beer was excellent! Between the live entertainment, the historical setting, and the overall atmosphere, it was absolutely worth paying the extra money. Overall, we had an amazing time at Eastern State Penitentiary's Halloween event. The combination of the historic location, fantastic haunted mazes, talented actors, Touch Pass option, photo opportunities, food trucks, and unique Speakeasy experience made for a memorable night. If you're visiting Philadelphia during Halloween season, we highly recommend checking this out! And seriously, don't skip the Speakeasy at Al Capone's cell. That experience alone was a major highlight for us! It is an old prison set in a neighborhood, kind of like Wrigley Field is in the middle of a neighborhood. The structure is huge and has a hub and spoke type of detention with 8 cell clocks around a center location. The cells were small, but they did have Al Capone's cell, which was decked out! He was there for a year for an illegal weapon. Nice narration and a great way to spend an hour or two in Philly!

One of the work-release administrators was extremely unapproachable and would get an attitude simply when asked questions. Inmates deserve proper medical care, respect, and answers--not hostility for speaking up. This facility needs accountability and serious change. If I could give it a zero I would.
