Honestly, I was a bit shook when I learned I would be going to BCP. Not many inmates speak the English at this particular stop, so if you happen to get a cell mate who speaks English your pretty lucky because you have company and can both talk about how terrible the place is. The guards are split into two groups. Group A is all the people I ether went to school with or knew from the streets. Group B was made up of some weird hybrid alien race of people who probably consider Hitler a role model. Not a week went by that my cell wasn't uprooted and turned inside out by the guards who had a mission to ensure that inmates didn't have any more than the allotted amount of toilet paper. This place is old and decaying.. I think the paint chipping away is probably lead based. And don't think I forgot about the air conditioner breaking back in 2007, that was inexcusable. We didn't have air conditioning on the block for almost two weeks! Shame on you BCP, if it wasn't for the whole A/C malfunction thing I would have gave you another star. The only redeeming quality was the food. I mean this place gives you a lot, I damn near gained twenty pounds by the time I left and I only had like a hundred days in that joint! This place gave out like eight slices of bread per meal, thats like a loaf of bread per day! Let me tell you, this place had some honest homestyle cooking. The chicken sandwiches was bangin', they gave out ice cream and on Sunday you would get a big ass plate of french toast, a doughnut and some chocolate milk! Plenty of times there was extra trays and we all had seconds. I hope the kitchen crew is still there because those boys was doing it right!

Not once during my stay did I fear for the virginity of my anus. Were talking two gyms, contact visits, cable T.V's in every cell and a sweet ass commissary. I'm not even kidding when I say you could get a big bag of potato chips for $2.00! Many of the cells offer beautiful views of the surrounding scenic country side, which is famous for it's horse farms. Don't get your hopes up though as these premium cells are in high demand and there is usually a waiting list. Nothing is perfect I guess.. up until recently we were able to smoke cigarettes and crack the windows open. As far as food, meh, I have experienced better. However, the head chef Darin really made magic with what he had to work with. I really hope he is still there because he did a really great job serving up the food. If I know Darin, he might just still be. The Darin I knew never did like paying his child support. Oh, I almost forgot! During my stay the commissary was selling muscle shirts with a cartoon rendering of a prisoner being held down by a ball and chain. These were not only hilarious but they are sure to make really great gifts and souvenirs as well!!

Make sure you…read moreget there early because the lines to get in are always super long, especially because cases are ACTUALLY occurring while you're going through the juror selection process. Make sure you are early enough to stop and get something to eat because they no longer offer food other than from a vending machine. Once in the juror selection room, make sure you pay attention to all instructions. Watch the little video and fill out the questionnaire honestly. The staff that I've interacted with have always been kind and courteous as long as you are the same. It sucks to sit there for hours, but there is a bright side. Your JUROR badge gets you a 10% discount at any of the shops in Reading Terminal Market. One tip I've always found works: if you really don't want to be selected for jury duty, act like you do want to be there! This particular occasion, I wasn't selected, received my $9 check and was on my way.

My stepdad has long drilled it into my head that jury duty is a civic responsibility, and I have to…read moresay I agree with him. As much as I still dread to see the jury duty slip come through the mail slot, I accept the call to action. Maybe it's my easygoing attitude that keeps landing me in the jury box! I just completed my second stint as a juror on a criminal case (first time in Philly - the other case was when I was a NJ resident). I have to say, I found the whole thing fascinating, if a bit time consuming. There are inconveniences involved for sure. The expense of getting to and from, not to mention lunches out each day. But probably the worst is giving up your cell phone the moment you get into the court room. They take this so seriously, even though they send you home with all the Internet access in the world each night. I don't understand it and I suspect it has more to do with not trusting people to have their phone on airplane mode or off in the courtroom, than it does with having Internet access. Pro-tips for potential jurors: serving on jury duty even for just a day will get you discounts at nearby restaurants and some Reading Terminal Market vendors. Be sure to ask about the discount! Also, you can bring coffee or other beverages into the building, but not in glass or aluminum containers. We had a laid-back judge who also allowed us to bring beverages into the courtroom. Trust me, you're gonna need a steady infusion of coffee if you get selected. Overall, my experience was interesting and fairly pleasant, but I'm off the hook for the next three years and not sad about it. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, hopefully in the distant future.

UNIT P - FEMALE WORK RELEASE UNIT…read more We have 17 women on the unit. Out of 17 only 11 go to work. That means while 11 of us are getting up and going to work daily to bring back out paychecks to pay rent the other 6 are sleeping/watching tv/ emptying vending machines, etc. and NOT PAYING RENT but being given the SAME privileges. When addressed with WR management or CO they are told there is "nothing they can do". When we agree to join WR unit we sign a CONTRACT STATING WE AGREE TO ALL THE RULES. Yet only HALF of us are held to that contract. The contract states MAINTAIN EMPLOYMENT- if you are fired or quit your job you are REMOVED from the unit. In the time I have been there, only some people are removed while others are shown favoritism and kept on the unit. Unemployed people who are on our unit are eligible for "cleaning" administration or the unit... except when they are let out of the unit they graze the pavement and peoples cars for cigarettes and lighters and have BEEN CAUGHT stealing from a WORKING WOMANS CAR and not removed from the unit. Remember, this lady that is stealing is not paying rent, while the lady she is stealing from IS. 11 of the working women have jobs that require them to get a good night sleep and to be up early... it is hard to get sleep when the women who do not have jobs that clean are told it has to be done between 11pm and 1am and are not told to keep the noise down. For multiple nights now, we have been woken up by girls screaming at people on the phone OR fighting over who cleans what and who does and doesn't have to clean. This should not be an issue. The people who do not work should be housed together in two rooms, and the working inmates should be kept together. This work release unit is a joke. It is made to make money or the county or the prison and not the inmates they claim to be helping "rebuild their lives". I would be embarrassed if I ran this place.
