Great subs on Thursdays. 10 out of 10 will try again. I recommend going in April or may.

Trying to schedule a visit here is a nightmare. There have been days i have called over 50 times…read morewithout anyone picking up. (had the same experience at Bayside) You are told that you can have a visit, then you call the day of to confirm for them to tell you that you cannot. I understand that the people in there are not their family members, but to tell your child they can go and see their father, then to be told the day of they can not because they made a mistake is a horrible way to treat anyone. I would of drove over an hour away with two 11 year olds to be turned away. Good thing i happened to call and follow-up that day. Instead of apologizing they are rude and talk over you. They transfer you to their supervisor who just again says i don't know who gave you that information and ends up hanging up. Tried to schedule another visit for the following week, told by 3 different employees the visit is approved, called today to confirm, and that employee was wrong as well. Why don't you train your employees to know their job and the rules so they don't have to do this to families? This is my first time having to deal with the NJDOC and honestly it is the worst experience that I have had. They need to really work on this for the family members, but in all reality, they don't care and it has been very clear in every facility and staff member that I have spoken to. I truly hope that if they ever find themselves in this situation that they are treated with more kindness and at the very least the correct information. The family members who are already dealing with so much deserve better.

I can actually review this place as my boyfriend was sitting there for 3 years for drug trafficking…read more(that happened many years ago). He lost a lot of weight and become almost autistic. He lost a job, his business, almost all friends (that's maybe a good thing after all) and almost lost me. The "clientelle" is rather friendly. The guards do not push above the roof. The food is bad, but there's commissary for a hundred bucks a week. Then you can "pay" the locals to cook something for you. He fought his case and won a time served. What an experience.

I came to MDC to visit a relative whom is a federal inmate. The whole process here wasn't as bad as…read moreI thought. I'm comparing the visiting process to 1 Police Plaza near City Hall and to Allenwood penitentiary in PA. The Friday visiting hours are from 5pm-7pm. If you get there on time, fill out the application, put your personal effects in locker that is provided, you'll be in the visiting room in no time. The security guards weren't as mean as I expected. In Allenwood, those guards were dicks! They didn't even allow you to use the lockers even though they had them. 1 Police Plaza isn't too bad but the visiting room is small and stinky. Here at MDC, it was fairly spacious. In the visiting room, there were private rooms for attorneys and inmates. There's 1 food vending machine, most items were $4-5. Two soda machines, all beverages were $2.75 and only 1 microwave to heat up your food. No utensils, just napkins. Sounds awful but still 10 times better than 1 Police Plaza. During visitation, the guard tells you where to be seated. In Allenwood, you choose wherever you like just as long as an inmate does not sit next to another inmate. The only thing that you're allowed to bring inside is cash money, only singles or five dollar bills. No 10's, 20's, 50's, 100's and you must keep the money in a zip lock bag. They aren't too hard on you if you don't have a bag. In Allenwood, they break your balls over everything and treat the visitor as if they're the inmate. Verdict - From just a visitor's point of view, it's not too shabby. Getting here by train was the worse part. Taking the R to 25th street station took forever. It's about a 7-8 block walk from the station. There's also a waiting room outside of MDC. There's air conditioning but it is still relatively hot because of the non tinted glass windows. I considered driving here but I'm not familiar with the parking situation and whether you're allowed to park under the BQE without a permit. I didn't want to risk it so I wound up taking a near 2 hour train ride to get to this darn place. All in all, knowing that a relative is now closer to home, it's a good sign. Just make sure you don't wear tan or brown colored shirt or pants and just follow their guideline policy before visiting an inmate. The process will be quicker than you think if you come correct.

I stayed here from 06 to 07 and forgot to leave a review…read more 1. Let me begin by saying everything is free and they never ask for a tip. Most of the hotels I've stayed in pretty much expect tips and the food is always a bit overpriced- not at Rikers. You can pay extra for "commissary" which is basically junk food and extra toiletries. 2. My vacation started at 100 centre street after two gentlemen and the court system as a whole, decided I should quit my gainful-tax paying lifestyle and spend a few years in the care of the correction institution of NY. Apparently, using prescription medication without a prescription warrants this. I was chained to another fine vacationer and we were swiftly taken by bus to Rike's. I give the bus experience 4 stars for value (it was free) but 1 star for the unfriendly staff. 3. Surprisingly great water pressure and shower temperature. 4. Very roomy and yet cosy cots. 5. The bread (served at every meal time) must be some type of local artisanal or ethnically appropriate recipe because it's unlike most store bought bread or any I've tasted previously. 6. The rest of the food is normal pseudo-American fair, pasta, beans and rice, etc. nothing to write about really. 7. Book selection for reading is average and I got a lot of reading done. 8. They have card games and chess/checkers, dominos etc for entertaining times with your new found friends. 9. Staff. The staff need retraining in customer service based duties. Especially the white shirted "captains". Not sure what they believe to be a captain of...but it sure isn't making the customers feel welcome. They often curse wear frowny faced scowls....it just generally seems like they don't want to work there. Every now and then (if your lucky) you'll get to see a Broadway type performance art piece featuring a neo-modern take on the classic Ninja Turtles. They come out yelling and cursing and telling everyone to lay face down on the floor....oh boy it's exciting!!! They prefer Donatellos character though using the culturally appropriate Bo or long stick type weapon. As a side note, I'd really like to see more variety in the characters played and such different weapons. All in all if a cultural diverse, but gender specific, lots of free time vacation is your thing (and by that I mean non-Anglo Caucasian) I'd say you'll love it.

Everything..... The staff is unprofessional and the food is so bad that a dog won't even eat…read moreit..... They won't let you have personal clothes, yet they give you used jumpers that are to last for your entire time there.... Your locked up 23 hours a day and for the hour you do get, you spend it on the unit because they always give the excuse that they don't have enough staff to take you outside..... It's hot in the summer and super cold in the winter.... I became suicidal because of it all and u definitely don't recommend anyone to go there at all , so please stay home out of trouble and whatever you do try not to get yourself locked up !!!!!'n
