It's so close to where I'm marrying the top dude in my life. How can I not love it? I've eaten at North Star Piccadilly twice now, and while I've yet to sample something from the exciting-sounding breakfast menu I've been mightily impressed. Let me tell you for why. First of all, when you think of the Northern Quarter, you think of A LOT of places that are awesome. When you think of Piccadilly, you might be a bit... 'meh? Oh there's that place that does the all-day breakfasts and kebabs near the station that's been there for EVAR. Or there's the place that can't decide whether it wants to be a jacket potato place or a Central Perk or a Fatso's.' Well, you're wrong. Walk along Dale Street towards the Ancoats part of this end and you'll not be disappointed. Between this and Fresh Bar, things are really starting to heat up. If they can just fill in the gaps between here and vivID and Islington Wharf, life is going to be sweet on my side of Manchester! Anyways, this is always my go-to when I'm bringing a lovely friend back from the station now. One, because I get to show off the wedding venue, and two, because its ace. Like its much bigger brother in Chorlton, this little sister (I'm being totes sexist as Chorlton's North Star decor is blue while this one is pink) offers up some quality nosh. There doesn't seem to be as much emphasis on the cakes as in the South Manc branch, but sometimes that's a good thing. Still, I was eyeing up the blondies like some kind of blondie equivalent of your average crack addict. I wanna quit the gym. I've had the caramelised onion and pastrami sandwich on rye, and it's epic. Yummy, toasted, plentiful side salad, great flavours. I've also had the coronation chicken salad served atop couscous and that bad boy defeated me. These portions are pretty huge, and so fresh! Row and I shared the soup when we sandwiched and they very kindly divided a portion into two bowls... but considering these bowls were full-sized, I think they actually gave us a portion each for the price of one. Lovelies. The deli prices can be quite steep but to be fair I know what the mark-up's like on these things, folks have to make their pennies. The smoothies and juices come from a machine, so you've only two choices, but they still taste ruddy lovely. Definitely one for repeat visits, and for when I'm feeling lazy breakfast-wise!

Fabulous brunch. Had poached eggs with avocado, bacon and mushroom. Truly delish and beautifully presented. Great atmosphere in this charming little cafe. Great music too. A sensory hat trick... Would come back all the time if I didn't live in NYC.

North Star Piccadilly is the second venue of North Star Delicatessen in Chorlton, but Piccadilly having more of a focus on being a cafe, which also sells other nice items you can take home. In Piccadilly Basin, it sits in a new building and is joined via a door to some sort of offices. I'm not sure who they are, but their staff regularly walk through the door and through the cafe to get outside, and vice versa, which is a very strange idea. The venue itself is modern and fresh, with shelving reaching from floor to ceiling showing off the items available for purchase, as well as some of those available to order within the cafe itself, as well as a chiller stocked with a good array of chilled drinks, including root beer, which is always nice to see! The menu is modern and simple, offering hot drinks, cold drinks, beer, wine, and light meals. Dining is casual, you sit at a table of your choice and order at the desk. Browsing the tea menu, I chose the North Star Rose Blend Tea, a blend of rosebuds, hibiscus and rose balm. It was a little sharper than the average rose tea, but had a distinct jam flavour, which was very pleasant! The teapot was a bit of an odd issue, as the spout was a little too small for the loose tea, meaning it wouldn't pour properly at first, and dribbled onto the table. Perhaps a teapot infuser might be a better idea here rather than a tea strainer. I wasn't offered a choice of milk, and it seems I was given whole milk which isn't really my preference, but it's by no means a deal breaker. Looking at the food menu, I decided to order a jacket potato with cheese and beans. It didn't take long for it to arrive, and it was very wholesome and filling, with a tasty side salad and dressing. One interesting option on the jacket potato menu was a filling of crayfish and lemon mayonnaise, which I've never seen offered before. Maybe next time! There was one strange incident, which was that after my second cup of tea, I noticed the milk in my tea had separated, as though it had gone off. It hadn't done for the first cup, only the second cup! I mentioned it to the staff member behind the counter, who was apologetic, and explained that the milk should be fine as it was a new bottle, but he checked the date anyway, and offered me a fresh pot of tea. I didn't really have time at this point for another pot, but I think he handled the situation well, considering how strange it was! The service was friendly, the food was tasty, and the cost was pretty decent. I'd visit again happily.

Awesome curry and chili coconut beans at NS Piccadilly.

Northstar have two ventures, this cafe and a very popular Deli in Chorlton. For me this place wins, which is showing by its growing patronage. All the food is made fresh on the day by the girls who work there, who take considerable time to come up with awesome specials and really cater to their crowd. They have a few truly passionate barristas and some great ideas for your lunch. It's a quiet vibe usually but around 12-2 can be hammered these days! Free WiFi, lots of working lunches, a great place for casual meetings. They cater for a lot of events, doing afternoon tea for large groups, or much bigger food events such as art fares in Spinning Fields! I recommend this place for lunch, but be prepared to pay, it's definitely not cheap! For me, it's worth the money. Businesses can do much worse for lunch meetings with a decent quality / value aspect.

I took up residence in the dimly lit back area, where the cheerful waitstaff promptly took my order of a blood orange hot chocolate made with almond milk (!) The drink came out frothy and light, with a cloud of chocolate-dusted milk foam atop subtle, smooth chocolate. No bitter or artificial aftertaste. While bopping along to the background music and working on my laptop, I was informed that Leaf would close early at 19h instead of 20h, so I seized the opportunity to order dinner as well: the jerk lamb rump, and an order of jasmine pearl tea. The waiter helped me verify that the lamb was free of dairy, and soon I was chowing down on succulent roast lamb and garlicky roast beans. The mango jam was a perfect accompaniment to the meat, but I found the coconut/coriander rice too mushy to my taste. It helped me to imagine them as mashed potatoes instead, haha. The tea was sensuously fragrant, and I welcomed the scented fog clouding my glasses. I wish I could have stayed there longer, but I might return for brunch or tea - Leaf is truly a serene, wonderful establishment.

We first popped into the Piccadilly pub where I know it to be comfy and cheap and cheerful. After 20 minutes of choosing what we wanted, the barman sharply said ''oh there is an hours wait for food''...which we then left. I then suggested we try somewhere in the station itself, because of its nature there would be no extended waiting time.. Wandering upstairs I discovered a bar/cafe. Glancing at the menu we decided to settle, as it promised quick food delivery. The menu offers breakfasts, panini's, hot dogs , burgers and home made cakes...I decided to try the Goats Cheese, Roast Pepper , Mushroom burger with a Berry smoothie. First off, I had asked one of the barmen what the smoohie of the day was. It was difficult to tell out of the three standing there who was serving who..He answered very rudely he was serving someone. When it came to our turn to actually order food it was a disaster. He was obviously new and struggled to put it through the till. When he eventually did and repeated the order back, it was completely wrong. I must have repeated my order six times..how can you mistake a veggie burger for pulled pork? During this time the queue started to build. Who I thought might have been an experienced woman, she tried to step in and take control. She was even ruder than the man. She also struggled to put it through... By this point we were going to walk out because they were taking their frustrations out on us, and the manager had let this happen for ten minutes before stepping in. If I were her I would have told my two new staff to apoligse for their rudeness . She put our order through immediately and got rid of the crowd single handedly. When the food was served the waitress gave me daggers every time and spoke sarcastically. The food was really tasty but the hostile nature and ill treatment spoiled it for us. I will not go back again because I have never been so ill treated before, and the way that the manager let them flounder for so long. I will be giving the actual company itself direct feedback because that was not on . Oh and they don't have a toilet.. you have to use the ones downstairs for 30p a pop.. 24/12 /14- my star rating is going because after discussing my experience with head of management, they really looked into it and compensated me £35..really Impressed with the level of care

I'm a big fan of people watching especially in a train station, I've seen break ups, couples meeting for dates and people say there last goodbyes. But ultimately this is about hourglass! People say the drinks are expensive, yet you go to London and happily pay £5.60 for a pint. So here in Manchester in a public railway station where we all know prices will be up anyway, I paid £8.20 for two pints. So realistically its not that bad. The beer was cold and refreshing and they do a realllllllly nice hot chocolate. So realistically your waiting for your train or waiting for somebody to get off a train. it is worth a visit. Equally the food is not of Michelin star quality but its perfectly edible and rather scrumptious. Its very much worth a visit!

I decided to try this one because why not ... it is quicker for me to get to when I visit on the train as its just outside Piccadilly station so thought why not. Its a 2 floor restaurant with seating both upstairs and down, huge glass store front so you can sit inside and watch the people going to and from the station and just relax. I got there just after 8am and there wasn't as many people in as there would have been for the original store in the centre of the city, which is good because it meant I could easily get a seat and served. The decor was awesome and some of my pictures show it, however I didn't go upstairs and always feel dodgy when taking pictures of the arrangement as I was across from the serving area. It looked nice done up all festive too and we quickly got seen to. Luckily it has the same menu as the other establishments and the lovely server told us that everything was available which is awesome. Being a creature of habit, I went for my old faithful, the grande bouche which is the brioche french toast with bacon, and a vanilla latte. I figured, in order to review them both, I need to try the same dish and see which one I preferred. Unfortunately I could differentiate my favourite as they are both EPIC. However, I do believe I got more bacon at the piccadilly one so YAY for more bacon. I only have 2 niggles at this store, however, one was partly my fault, and so was the other thinking about it. They were, the food didn't stay hot enough (however I was dawdling in eating it) ... and the other is that, with people coming in and out constantly, there was a draft (but we did sit near the door). All in all it was an excellent trip and I cant wait to go there again. As well as the grande bouche and vanilla latte, I got a stack of 3 blueberry pancakes to share with my brother. We have had the pancakes before and due to the size, they got a little dry ... however the addition of blueberries moistened it up as they were VERY juicy and delicious blueberries (deffo want more blueberries next time). SO with visiting this store ... I now know that I can go to any moose coffee in Manchester and love it. This is GREAT news for me ... AND ... its on Deliveroo so when I eventually move up to Manchester, I can be lazy and order it in. YAY

Moose Coffee was founded in 2006. The concept grew from a love for the great American breakfast…read moreculture and nowhere does it better than the diners & delis of New York City. This is their latest branch and second in Manchester city centre, on Piccadilly Approach - it is a fairly small store but serves a convenient location if one is getting a train from Piccadilly Station. If you've ordered with Moose in Manchester on Deliveroo - chances are the order has come from this branch. The store inside is pretty small compared to their other branch but it still does have some nice comfortable seating and tables (there were children standing on the cushioned seats which goes down the store however which I didn't like - but the staff can't control customers children!) When I entered, I waited to be sat down and was served by a man - he seemed to struggle understanding English and even admitted that - I asked him for an allergen guide (it says on the menu you can request one and they do have it online too but I wanted to get one in-store to test the staff knowledge to see if I actually felt confident eating here), however, he looked at me puzzled and originally thought I was unable to read the menu - so despite asking to sit down twice and asking him questions, he appeared to block me from sitting down. I eventually had to ask another member of staff who seemed a lot more confident than the other staff member here - who seemed confused that gluten-free options weren't labelled on the menu when vegan was. This was a slow and frustrating process. I ended up going for the Mighty Moose after finding out it could be made with gluten-free bread, the lady server also offered to make me an iced tea but she did say she wasn't aware of how it would turn out as it is basically making a hot tea over ice and they don't normally do it. I decided to go for an Iced Earl Grey with Vanilla syrup, this was quite reasonably priced at £2 with an extra £0.30 for syrup, however, the drink was just drinkable and it really was tea over ice - the drink didn't even taste of vanilla, it was just bitter water if anything. My food quality overall was okay but I did seem to have a problem with every aspect of my dish - considering it was with a potato hash, I expected the bacon to be those nice, thin crispy rashers of bacon however the bacon wasn't like that - it had no crispiness to it, it seemed slightly undercooked and was rather chewy. My fried eggs did look the part but I found them to be slightly too runny for my liking. The potato hash in most cases did taste quite good with nice potatoes however a good part of it was overseasoned and far too peppery - meaning I had to leave part of it which was a shame. I was quite surprised however with the gluten-free toast as it was basically on the brink of being burnt - considering how hard it is to toast gluten-free bread as it tastes longer I was shocked how they got it like this (it also is a shame they don't have gluten free bread clearly listed on the menu so customers can be easily aware of it) - the bread, however, was cold, it felt like they'd invented a zapper which toasts bread rather than getting it hot. The overall feel of the place wasn't great - and I certainly would want to avoid the outdoor seating area, with it being on such a busy street leading up to the station you have loads of people running past with cigarettes, suitcases and the Free Bus parking just outside - meaning if you want a more typical American diner experience you might be best heading to their other branch in the city on York Street. Everything came to £10.10 which for a city centre location and fresh food - wasn't too bad. Would I come here again? Probably not - only as a last resort is getting a train, facing issues from minor to much bigger on my food and the male server seeming inexperienced and untrained (he did seem friendly however he just really struggled). 2* for this being one of the better places to get food before heading on a train from Piccadilly station, especially considering terrible experiences at Carluccio's inside the station and Bella Itallia, a five minute or so walk away in Piccadilly Gardens in the past.
