I decided to give an Albanian place my patronage. 95% Lady Gregory quality at 60% of Lady Gregory prices. Tasty chicken noodle soup with a generous portion of chicken. Excellent Panini..perfectly cooked side of pasta. Attentive service. I am slightly miffed that no croutons or crackers were available with the soup. But not a material complaint. At the price-point? If I could give it 0 stars I would! we walked in with a service dog and they refused to serve us. Told us no dogs. When we said it was a service dog we were told no dogs. Needless to say they lost our business. read more

While running errands in Rogers Park, I happened on a sign that advertised pizza slices and drink for $2.99. At the time I quickly searched Yelp and Google but could not find any reviews. On a whim I decided to check it out. The place looks like a social or members only club. Definitely Eastern European and contains entertainment and seating, setup for a specific grouping of people. It looks "homely" more than like a common bar or dive bar for that matter. I'm not familiar with the location but kinda remember a bar operating in this space before. I mentioned, definitely Eastern European due to some indicators. A grouping of older men playing chess and speaking in their native language. On the flat screen television, Albanian music videos played and thumped throughout the bar. An older styled piano sat against an opposite wall. I imagine there are some lively weekends with gents singing to old school tunes. The pizza was terrible. When it was served I wanted to run but, since the lady of the bar served it, I sat and tried to eat it. I'd guess the gent that makes it knows how to make some good bread. This though.. not worth selling. Was it day old? Was it created with cheap products? It was mostly dry and could have used a better sauce and cheese. Doesn't matter. When I was dining in, I scanned Yelp and Google again and this time around I found their reviews! I dunno what happened before, but, had I realized they served more than just pizza, I may have opted for something else. Like cevapi. (sp?) Especially after seeing that worn out pizza. If it felt more welcoming I'd tell my fellow Yelpers to check it out.. but, I don't think they cared one way or the other about selling a slice of za. Other reviews note cheap drink pricing.. The first thing that I really liked about North Star was the service. The man who waited on us (and also cooked the food, I think) was great. The pizza was some of the best we ever had in Chicago, and Chicago is the best pizza town in the country. I am looking forward to trying other things on the menu. read more

Had the Burek w/ ketchup instead of yogurt. It was good. When I got the bill it was eight dollars and the item was seven. Then I show the employee the price and she changed it. I ordered the "bean stew" which turned out to be about a can's worth of white beans in a thin tomato sauce, topped with fried slices of sausage. The $13 dollar salad was small, with nothing particularly interesting. One of the worst meals I've ever had delivered. read more

Great pizza deals during the day and reasonably priced drinks. The bartender Mila is amazing at keeping customers comfortable while working quickly. However, the owner of the bar is absolute scum. Thanks to him and his attitude, this bar is NOT female friendly. I came in to watch some football. I was the only woman in the bar. Men wanted to buy me drinks and I would decline as I could out of politeness. The men in the bar began to get intoxicated and distrustful of each other when I would talk football with someone. This resulted in arguing and ME getting kicked out because these men couldn't stop thinking with the head between their legs. If you are a woman going in here, especially alone, just don't. The customers are kind enough but the owner will discriminate against you and give you hell for trying to peacefully exist in his bar. Unfortunately, I will not be going back to this establishment while he is there, and I sadly must suggest the same to all my female counterparts. Ok, so the ONLY reason I found this place, is because my 9-ball league team played their team this past Wednesday night, and the address was listed on our APA website. Otherwise, there is no mention of this bar anywhere on the interweb! Regardless, you should totally go. This bar is run by, and populated with, mostly Albanian men, young and old. It has a very unique flavor- Sports (with a few Albanian/Eastern European pop music videos thrown in for good measure) pool, a good (and cheap!) beer selection, but the best part of this bar is the people- Our pool team was welcomed by everyone. When I first walked in, I felt totally out of my element, but by the time we left, I had made a bunch of new friends, and learned a lot about a country I previously knew nothing about! (and I'm a fairly accomplished international traveler, so for me, it was really interesting!) In addition to the friendly patrons, apparently they do serve breakfast and lunch, (likely SE European fare) and they have a huge coffee/ cappuchino machine behind the bar- I did get a cappuchino in between beers. Long story short, if you're adventurous, outgoing, like to meet new people and learn about their cultures, I would totally head to this bar- they will welcome you with open arms. (Apparently, Albania and the US have a terrific diplomatic partnership and I was told all Albanians love Americans) Challenge someone to a pool game or a chess match! I am deducting 1 star only because the music is Eastern European Club/House music, and it is BLARING at all times. I was nervous at first...but the customers are very friendly and generous with drinks. Being a woman in a predominantly male bar I expect men to get drunk and flirt (Thats in every bar). All bars have their own set of losers or Aholes. I love this bar because it has good music, warm people and great food! The lady bartender is a hottie with a heart of gold. Total sweetheart and darn good at what she does. There is a very fine pool table as I play league out of there. Its a very inviting place and Im learning Albanian and Bosnian everytime I go!!!
