Part of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail that runs along the Allegheny & Ohio Rivers . Beautiful views of the city during a bike ride as well as Memorial Parks along the North Shore including The Fred Roger's, Vietnam, Korean, WWII & The Law Enforcement. Along the Ohio River is The USS Requin, (French for Shark) as submarine museum associated with the Carnegie Science Center. The Rivers Casino is also nearby if you're feeling lucky! Also along the North Shore there's a variety of restaurants for a bite along the ride. Well kept trails with friendly people along the way to chat with if you're so inclined. Always a nice and relaxing ride along the rivers. It's a refreshing ride in the heart of town that's close to the city yet surrounded by nature. This is a wonderfully maintained and easy to use trail along the river in Pittsburgh. As an out-of-town guest, I found it simple to find trail on-off points, and there were always city workers out cleaning. To be fair, the river had recently flooded and clean up work needed doing, which explains why they were there. Nevertheless, everyone was nice, friendly and made me feel safe using the trail on my own. Memorials and sculptures line the trail, making the run an enjoyable one with plenty to do sight-seeing wise while you're running. Loved it! Things to see on the run: PNG Stadium (Pirates), Heinz Field (Steelers), Mr Rogers Memorial (the Childrens Memorial), Allegheny County Police Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, World War II Memorial, Science Center, plus numerous steel bridges and assorted public art sculptures. read more

Fabulous and scenic but can be crowded. I love this trail. Highly recommend, especially on a weekday when there are fewer people.

Three Rivers Heritage Trail..maintained by the amazing "Friends of the Riverfront" is no doubt an amazing part of Pittsburgh. The trail extends over 20 miles. There are so many entrances to the trail - makes it effortless to find and enjoy. I work in the north shore and visit the trail several times a week and just love it. Its nice being by the river and watching the boats go by and also to take great snapshots of the amazing scenery. The trail is often referenced "North Shore Trail" or "Riverfront Trail" .. no matter what you refer to it.. its a big part of Pittsburgh. To me its no doubt one of the favorite reasons why I love living in Pittsburgh. read more

The North Shore Trail is perfect for walking, running and cycling. It's fairly flat and easily accessible. It can take you towards Milvale, although I must admit it can feel a tad creepy if you run past what looks like a high fenced junk yard towards the tracks. If you turn left, the road leads you to the 4th Street Bridge, which is where I prefer. The trail also takes you past the ball parks, Science Center, and Rivers Casino, towards the West End. People on the trail generally say hello. Steer clear of the geese. Leave them be. read more

Get on your bike or walk this trail that extends past Heinz Field or the other direction past the historic Heinz Lofts. It's clean, safe, and people from all ages and walks of life frequent this place. Even the geese love this place. Don't worry they are harmless and beautiful to look at. read more

Pretty run right along the river and under bridge - popular trail for sure. Lots of foot traffic and bike traffic on the trail which would make you feel safe if you were running solo. Definitely saving this for our next visit read more

Well with some unexpected dry weather, I decided it was time to get my road bike out, pack some snacks (and my insulin kit), strap on my helmet, and get a decent ride in. I tell ya, when you haven't been on your bicycle in a few months, you work out leg muscles you forgot you had! I basically rode from Squirrel Hill, through Schenley Park, down to the Eliza Furnace Trail, then over the Hot Metal Bridge to the Great Allegheny Passage Trail over to Station Square and then to the North Shore. I used the North Shore Trail to return. The North Shore Trail runs between the Velspar Corporation on Westhall Street and Herr's Island, going past the stadiums. It's really still a connector trail, paralleling the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers. It's a fairly pleasant ride, not overly exciting nor exerting, but still pleasant. All in all I got about 20 miles in--not too shabby for my second ride of the season. read more

Nice place to run and bike with incredible views of the city. I prefer the wooded trail portion because I'm not running on pavement, it's easier on my knees (I'm old). Lots of places to park along the trail, like Washington's Landing and near Heinz Lofts. The scenery makes this one of my favorite running spots, but there are definitely more people on bikes than on foot. As long as you can dodge them and trust that they'll dodge you, it makes for a really wonderful workout. Where else can you run along side a submarine? read more

We don't seem to have a separate Yelp entry for the north shore trail and the Strip District to Point State Park trail so I hope it's ok that I combine reviews. First the Strip District portion would get 5 stars. The vast majority, other than a small bit by the Cork Factory, is paved. Maintenance is kept up. The views are just wonderful; I love going underneath the bridges and coming out by Point State Park. This is part of my biking work commute to downtown from Lawrenceville and I greatly enjoy it. The hills are pretty gentle unless you're vastly out of shape and slow like moi. I also take my senior citizen pup for walks on this trail and he enjoys himself so much that he can't help but nap all day after the long walk. A tired puppy means a happy puppy and master. I do wish they'd properly connect Lawrencevillle with the Strip though. Secondly, the North Shore trail. This section has less ups & downs, it's mostly flatland. It's also very pretty and affords you a nice look of the stadiums, casino, science center and the confluence. As others have noted, it can be a bit muddy but I bike this area so I'm ok doing some puddle dodging. There's a connector with Herrs Island which is a nice residential community to pass through. Who knows if they like all those bikers and runners though. This review would be 5 stars if not for the sometimes muddy nature of the North Shore trail or the fact that I can be easily slowed down by the winds along the rivers. But still, I'm a huge fan of both trails. read more

Hope you don't mind mud. I walk the North Trail daily to get to work and back. Well when it is frozen or dry. The trail winds along the Allegheny River from Sharpsburg to the Carnegie Science Center. A third of which is paved and very nice. However the two-thirds that are not paved are riddled with huge mud puddles and quite sloppy. Many runners prefer the packed dirt, but with no trail maintenance the trail has turned into one big sloppy mess over the years. That being said if the weather has been dry and you need to stretch your legs I do recommend walking, running, or biking this scenic trail. read more

This is another good trail in Pittsburgh. It's good, and I recommend it, but it could be a bit better: - The surface is not great. It's either compacted pea-gravel, or poor asphalt, I'm not sure which. But it's gritty, dirty, and does not offer good grip. - The trail itself is a bit too narrow. Yes, two bikes and pass, but even wide-walking pedestrians make passes on a bike difficult. (Hint - slow way down, say "on your left," don't scare people) - It doesn't really connect to anything. It heads east, but then it turns to narrower gravel, then coarser gravel, then huge gravel, and you realize you're not on a trail at all, you're on a gravel access road next to the train track! read more

I run this trail almost every Saturday. There are some definite regulars and very smiling faces early in the morning. I run with a group of women called Black Girls Run. It's a national group with chapters in almost every state. It motivates us to be active and stay active. If you see me on the trail make sure to day hello. The trail extends all the way past the casino on one end and on the other it extends pass the boathouse and up towards the bridge (I can't recall which one). There's plenty of trees for a good breeze and shade. It also goes from gravel to pavement. There's a beautiful bridge and a gorgeous view of the city! read more

A pretty good trail for biking and running during the summer months (as long as they don't get muddy). Parts of the trail have a nice view of the city. I recently ran a 5k on this trail and enjoyed it. read more
