Triage I showed up at St. Joseph's Hospital on the evening of the 15th of September with a racing heart and shortness of breath. After over 90 minutes, the entire waiting room had been cared for except for me, including an elderly lady who was shaking from marijuana use. I'm not sure what your policies are for who gets priority, but maybe trouble breathing and chest pressure should be up on the priority list. 2. Communication I was asked many questions, which is a good thing, but it seems like most of my answers were ignored or not passed down to the people who needed to know those answers. a. I was asked about my religious beliefs, and I clearly said "none", yet a member of the clergy was sent to my bedside offering spiritual comfort. That may be welcoming to those who find comfort in that, but to an atheist like me, it's an awkward annoyance. b. I was asked if I was diabetic. My answer was borderline and under control. I was then treated like a full-blown diabetic with excessive finger pricks and attempts to administer insulin. I was given high carbs to eat and my metformin medication was withheld. Needless to say, my sugar level spiked dangerously high and that put me in danger of being insulin dependent; the exact thing I was trying desperately to avoid for over a decade. c. I hate being lied to and led along. We only need you to stay one more night. We only need you to stay 1 more hour. We only need one more test result. All lies. 3. Procedures a. I was given a chest x-ray and hours later the doctor wanted to do another. I understand a comparison can be beneficial, but there comes a point where the risks outweigh the benefits. After explaining that I had over 7 x-rays in the past month, I was treated like I was the one being unreasonable to refuse any more. Frequent exams in a short period may result in a higher cumulative radiation dose, which could potentially increase the risk of cancer or other radiation-related health issues. b. Losing track of medication given. After my latest blood work, my potassium level was at 3.2, which is low. I was given 2 large potassium pills. Less than an hour later, the nurse came to give me 2 more. When I explained that I just took two pills, the answers was Yeah, but your levels are low. Yes, they WERE low, but after I took the pills, the levels were unknown and more likely to be OK. Trying to re-medicate based on old data could be dangerous or even life-threatening, since too much potassium is not healthy. c. My blood pressure was taken with a faulty cup. After an unusual very low blood pressure reading, I was given medication to RAISE my blood pressure. Only after my objections, did they bother to try a different cuff, which proved my blood pressure was normal. I shouldn't have to keep track of everything being done to me from a hospital bed. I feel like I had to question everything being done to me, since it felt like everything was just done "robotically" without any critical thinking or questions. 4. Accommodations I know a hospital is not a vacation resort, but basic human dignity and hygiene shouldn't be too much to ask for. a. I was at the hospital for 4 days. In those 4 days, I was in the same underwear, the same hospital gown and no access to a shower or any kind of hygiene material except the soap in the bathroom for hand washing. My gown was soaked with saliva, blood, urine and dirt. b. Sleeping was next to impossible. The patient next to me was coughing and throwing up very loudly and I was woken up for vital signs throughout the night. There needs to be a better way to accommodate patients. Patients need proper sleep, hygiene, reasonable treatment that doesn't cause more harm and food that meets dietary requirements.

From the friendly receptionists right when you walk in those doors & the security team who locks up your belongings while you're in surgery to the nurses- lots of nurses- they were all very sweet, caring just simply great and my doctor- Dr. Gilbert- an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hand & upper extremity surgery- he is truly amazing. Not to mention, they literally waste no time- I was on the bed, hooked up to an IV within minutes, waited a little while, anesthesia kicked in, the last thing I remember was being in the OR & woke up in the recovery room. The PACU nurse made sure I was OK, gave me graham crackers & water, and even helped me get dressed. I was indeed well taken care of at this Hospital.

I tried calling to question a bill I received in the mail. Somebody answered the phone promptly,…read moresaid she would put me on a brief hold then she never came back on the phone. I waited 10-15 minutes and she never assisted me. This is a frequent problem in the medical field-one employee is forced to do both-answer phone calls and assist patients because the office is poorly managed and must not have the money to pay another employee to assist with patient calls. The employee did not seem to care I was on the phone for so long.

You can tell from the very first visit that you have with them that they truly care about the patient and will take the time to provide care for the patient vs. just trying to get through as many as you can and compromising the quality time you have with the patient.

My recovery after surgery has been much more difficult, painful, and prolonged than I was led to expect. If you've ever experienced nerve pain, you know how intense and unrelenting it can be, which made the lack of empathy and impersonal treatment by them that much more disappointing. Dr. Sonstein arrived at my hospital room the day after my surgery, to do his first and only post-op visit. In between talking to someone else on his cell phone, he quickly told us that he was very rushed--never a good thing when your job requires precision and care--and that he couldn't stay "more than a minute". He visually examined my incision (no more than a few seconds) and then quickly left the room (all while still on a phone call, obviously distracted). In the full year since my surgery, I have not heard from him, not even once, to ask about my recovery or if the pain meds were working. What a disappointing and shabby way to treat a patient. Clearly, my spinal surgery meant nothing more than a metric to him. Dr. Obedian was somewhat better, although he too was distracted on his cell phone during the first post-op hospital visit, and he too left the room quickly with no chance for a conversation. In my follow-up visits to his office it was clear to me that he was not familiar with my current pain management regime, and he and his PA twice prescribed pain and nerve medication that we had previously ruled out. I can't tell whether the surgery was successful. My lifestyle is still adversely impacted by pain (albeit, less pain than before) and limitations on my daily activities. Perhaps that improvement means that the surgery was as good as they had hoped for (or maybe even better), or perhaps it was substandard. I simply don't know.

The front desk is very rude. Hung up on me 5x without urgently trying to get me care. I ONLY GAVE TWO STARS SO THEY CANT GET IT REMOVED. They care quality is very poor. It's all new grads here no actually head doctor or nurse or anything.

Won't go into it but after almost three days they did nothing but give her a room on the 18th floor away from everyone who could see she almost died because what they did to her. I have walked in and room her out IMMEDIATELY! know your rights!! You are ALLOWED to just WALK out!! I took her to stony brook and within minutes they told us that she was severely dehydrated, needed a blood transfusion, and was borderline septic. If she stayed one more night she would have died! ALONE! because they kick people out at 10pm
