My oral care isn't particularly complicated nor have I had serious issues, so it's focused on cleaning and periodontal care. However. This year; 2026, as many medical offices have done, the business end of the operation has been changed to a corporate billing center. It's a mess. They sent the billing to an insurance carrier we had not used for 2 years. I called this separate billing location about it 3 times; the last time, the nice young woman assured me it was all taken care of but today, after having received another bill (which, along with appointment reminders was sent for some reason to my husband, who is not a patient there but listed as an emergency contact) They sent a request for payment to my husband's phone number, but not to me. I had him send it to me. I followed the link where I was directed to enter my birthdate. Just as it had the previous time, it responded that my birthdate was incorrect. I called the Brier Creek office. Again. Asking the receptionist who answered about my account, I was told that my account shows that we have NO INSURANCE LISTED. WTH. At my last (and I do mean last) appointment, I stood right there and handed the (temp) office person the actual insurance card. I just placed another call to this anonymous bog corporate entity where a bot voice encouraged me to leave a message and they promised ( ! ) to get back to me within 2-3 days. As a dental practice, I've always felt confident in Stansell Dentistry. But the choice of business/ billing services that was chosen to handle the financial end is a mess. I hope that it doesn't ruin her business, because she doesn't deserve that.

They executed their duties in a professional manner and made me feel comfortable at each visit throughout the long process. What resulted was that I received my smile back! I go every six months for my regular cleaning and I think they have only run late (more than 5 minutes) once. All the other times they have been very prompt. The front desk staff and dental hygienists are professional and friendly. Dr. Barker is usually very prompt with his exam and like his staff, very friendly. I've never had a bad experience with the dental hygienists and I have been with three different people. The only gripe I have is they have some strange billing practices related to insurance. It seems that my family either overpays or underpays, it's never right. I drive from Downtown Durham to North Raleigh just because I like this dentist. Here's to clean teeth!

They were thorough, explaining every step of the way, sensitive to my discomfort threshold, gentle, presented me with a course of treatment, looked out for my financial liability and provided quality service at a fair price. I left sorely disappointed; the hygienist just flossed my teeth, an activity I do better on my own at home. No polishing, no scrapping, no need to rinse my mouth and spit out the water. Nothing! I had an x-ray of my teeth taken, after which the hygienist left to retrieve the dentist. At least 15 minutes passed, maybe longer. Mind you, I saw no other patient in the office and I easily made the appointment the day before; the delay. Honestly, I opined there was no basis for the delay, the time could have been used for the cleaning I came in for, and all this pissed me off. The dentist then made his entrance. Though I was a new patient, he kept interaction to a minimum and was otherwise reserved and unfriendly. Although I like almost everyone, I didn't like the way he spoke to me with a degree of condescension that he barely concealed. After briefly checking out my teeth with a sickle probe - I did not see him use the mouth mirror - consulting the x-ray. he gave me a $3,000 worth of dental treatment that required his immediate attention or else I'd have to get a root canal. His attempt to show me on the screen the location of the cavity - a dark shading that I noticed on other teeth - was unconvincing. I simply did not trust his diagnosis. When I refused treatment, the office wanted me to sign an acknowledgement regarding the same. The whole experience was absolutely horrible and a complete waste of time!
